If it helps, think about how some players pay for early access to games that they get to play maybe a week before everyone else. Think of your purchase as an early access but for months, if not years, before all the people who are getting it free now. Were you willing to wait all the time since the DLCs were released for free (assuming they ever were) instead of enjoying the game all that time?

You're probably not going to get your money back but perhaps we can put the free to play players into a catapult? The point probably is to draw in players (from this current awesome gaming generation) in the runup to final shape. Its pretty important to the future of the game that the release does well and they didn't make it free until the season was almost over. Which I've already seen at least one person complain about.

Its great for players to be able to catch up, and even get new players into seasonal activities that have all but dried up. At least I have people to play with and not rush through while I am trying to grab a flame or do an unlock that I would otherwise get pulled through. Edit, and for the past few seasons, the lowest season rank that I hit was around 150, and that was without the season pass. I just did nightfalls, PvP and other activities... But still had plenty of fun and no complaints.

1. You realize you can still play & do the rankups even w/o the season pass, right? 2. If you are struggling with your finances this bad, then maybe gaming should be lower on your priority list.

Much like a desirable shader or ornament that can only be purchased for silver becomes available for bright dust later in the season, you essentially pay for early access. This can only be accessed for 4 weeks total, even though I am of the opinion the previous DLC should be free or at minimum in an inexpensive pack besides the latest two DLC (Witch Queen and Lightfall) it is an amazing turnaround from Bungie. I don't believe they have gone as far as free season passes before, though they are bundling the next episode directly into the DLC. Its honestly great to have more players to finish up the older activities like Deep Dives before they are removed.

Every bit of content I've played (and some I didn't play) I paid for, and I'm not pressed over the matter. More players are good for the health of the game, right?
