So this is the Recluse huh?

I wasn’t around when it first came out so I was hyped to get my hands on it. Completely unimpressed. I have many iterations and I don’t think any of them are very good. Feeding Frenzy/Surrounded, Subsistence/Surrounded, Feeding Frenzy/ Desperate Measure, Subsistence/Desperate Measures to name a few. I don’t know what it is, but in anything but bubble gum content, they don’t seem to perform. I’m not sure if it’s the low impact rating, the small magazine, or both, but it just feels like they constantly need reloading before they do much other than take out a couple Thralls. Subsistence doesn’t give enough of a bullet bump and FF seems hard to kick into gear at its highest levels to make the reload actually feel fast- you either run out of adds or they take too many bullets to get rapid kills going. The only content they seem to “perform” in is content that you could walk through with a pea shooter. As a comparison I happened to have a purple engram drop in the middle of an Onslaught run and it was a Sub/Surrounded Ros Aragos so I figured I’d A/B it with the Recluse of the same perks. Not even a close contest. The Ros has higher impact, a larger mag, and otherwise similar stats for close to mid-range work. Just slightly lower firing rate. I was able to obliterate an entire wave at a spawn point without reloading with the Ros, whereas the Recluse needed at least a couple reloads. The Ros also seemed to stay on target more easily, even through the Recluse has a 100 Recoil Direction vs a 57 on the Ros…. add to that the Ros reload is almost double the Recluse. So I’m thinking “why bother?”. Maybe once we can enhance the perks…..? Am I expecting too much? I just wish I could get the Repulser/Volatile to drop so I can compare it to my Title and Age Old Bond.

Keep in mind that the Master of Arms Perk as it currently exists (a 15% damage buff for seven seconds after scoring a kill with any equipped weapon) is nowhere remotely as strong as the original version prior to the very first nerf it received. When first released Recluse would hit for 19crit/12body in Crucible without Master of Arms active; after activation it would instead hit for 25crit/25body, essentially turning all body shots into crits with an extra 30% damage bonus for seven seconds after a single kill with any weapon. This damage bonus to body damage (later referred to by the devs as the Precision Damage Function) worked similarly in PvE content, allowing for crit-style body damage with very little effort on the user’s part (essentially making it a much easier to activate Legendary Tarrabah before Tarrabah was released). When it became too much of a balance issue the devs made the gun more readily available to all players for a short time before nerfing Master of Arms, reducing the overall damage buff it provided while also completely removing the Precision Damage Function which turned body shots in non-crit crits. This Perk that would be wildly powerful today should also be viewed in the context of the game at the time, prior to Stasis and Strand, prior to 3.0 Verbs on Class Abilities and weapon Perks, and back when Primary ammo weapons had limited ammo that had to be replenished with drops from enemies. Recluse in its original form was essentially glued to the Energy weapon slot for those who went to the trouble of having earned it. (΄◉◞౪◟◉`)

    • The recluse in the before time .. the long long ago.. was a different animal. I've found a few rolls but prefer the feeding frenzy master of arms roll. Bungie is reverting the sunsetting so I can just use my original recluse when the time comes.

      • The recluse we have now is a hollowed version of what we used to have, you're basically not gonna get a roll that gets you that close to what it was like previously
