It's just a game...

And a business. This isn't a movie where some evil megacorp is trying to rule the world. Bungie is a company. Sony is a company. Destiny is a product. We are all consumers. If consumers are willing to pay for a product, then a company will make money. If consumers are not willing to pay, then a company will not make money. If a company makes money, they will keep paying the people who make the product. If a company does not make money, then they will either stop making the product, or get new people. The people who actually DO the work, unless they build something bad because of incompetence, generally have no control over the decisions that make a product viable. They are told what to build, they build it. They don't decide on what story is being told. They don't determine whether or no something is "fun", or "good". They just code, design what their "leaders" instruct them to build. And like EVERY industry, "leadership" rarely takes the fall for a product that does not resonate with the consumer. But that is not unique to Bungie or Sony. Destiny as a concept has never lived up to the initial vision. And IMO has always been an exercise in missed opportunity and failure to reach it's full potential. I finally stopped playing because it just wasn't offering enough depth to warrant my time. But I spent MANY years, enjoying the game, and the gameplay. So I don't think Destiny was ever "bad", just never as good as it could be. So, while the current state is unfortunate. I don't think Destiny, Sony, or Bungie are "bad". I don't think they as entities need to go away. I just hope that all parties get their -blam!- together and create something worth playing again. I hope those who deserve additional opportunities in the industry, find those opportunities and I hope those who don't, find success in another career. At the end of the day, Destiny is just a piece of entertainment. If it is good, people will pay for it, if it isn't they won't. And that's ok.

  • Why do people keep mentioning Sony? They had -blam!- all to do with this. This is a gross case of mismanagement. And if we’re reducing things, those jobs were only a source of livelihood. Gee, that actually sounds bad (because it is). Hell the worst thing I’ve heard was way before Sony. ‘There’s no day more dangerous than the day before you vest.’ Implying management may actually have a history of axing employees to retrieve market shares. If that’s true I feel like I might need a shower just for *playing* a Bungie game. I hope it’s not, because that actually sounds worse than EA and Activision/Blizzard policies combined. Preying in your employees for shares. Just a level of evil like that is unfathomable.

  • All I know is that none of this is on Sony. Bungie has been slowly putting nails through their feet since lightfall at a minimum.

I’m torn… I think that the upper management’s hubris have landed Bungie here. I hate this for the talented devs who have spent a lot of time and passion working on this game. Having worked in the entertainment business myself, I’m well aquatinted with the long hours and time away from family, so I’m not celebrating the downfall of Bungie by any stretch… but actions have consequences. For far too long, Bungie has treated their most dedicated fan base as hopelessly addicted fiends who will accept anything they shovel out. At some point, people are going to walk away and we are seeing it play out in real time. Look I understand, you need new customers, but the focus on short term gain has hurt Destiny to a point that I feel might damage the series beyond repair. A lot of people were expressing the sentiment of wanting to walk away before any of the recent developments surfaced. Only time will tell. I do fear that a Taken King/Forsaken moment isn’t on the horizon, despite being so desperately needed. I hope that the talented developers who have been passionately involved will find jobs in the coming months, before this ship finally sinks.

Reasonable take? Get out of here. Destiny is love. Destiny is life. Just a game? We spread our cheeks for Destiny here. We'd had 3 kids with Destiny. Destiny pays our bills. Check yourself next time you say something so insensitive as "it's just a game." We are mentally ill here, buddy. Destiny is not just a game to us, it's our lover.

      • I can't stand how every time something like this happens some dullard thinks we all need a business 101 lecture. We know all of this. We're human, it's natural that majority of us have an attachment to this franchise. Many of us made friendships and relationships here. We care about us as a community and we care about the human beings who make the gameplay/art/music/etc because these things come from a human place. But it's become more and more corporatized and the heart and soul is just gone. Destiny has lost its balance completely and the scales have tipped totally in favor of the game being simply a money printer for executives and shareholders to buy a new Lambo every year. We are all fine with Bungie making money. We celebrate their success, but things are just too far gone and the game is in a fairly shoddy state regardless. New player experience has been garbage for so long, I've not been able to recommend this game for years. It's been a slow bleed but this feels like a fatal blow. They literally did this is the sneakiest, greediest way too by essentially stealing company shares back from the people fired. I'm sorry, but so much of what is coming out about them actually does remind me of evil businessman stereotype characters from 80s movies.

          • Thanks for the free business class, I had no idea. I just thought people were upset because they've been telling Bungie for some time now that what they are doing isn't working, and that if they quit playing it would be a waste of the few hundred dollars they spent on it.

                    • That stuff is true to a point and its true this game and type of game can probably feel like it lacks depth to some people. But the problem with that is that when or if they add depth then some people are going to go very deep into the depth and some other people are going to complain that's not fair because they don't have the time or all these other things they say. So its not like they just never made this game for this particular community. And the business stuff is definitely true because that has meant things for the game and how it makes money. Things that people also often complain about.

                    • A large number of people have an emotional attachment to the game, and for some reason Bungie. If it’s not working, you change up the people. CEO wasn’t happy with Final Shape reviews,so it’s pushed back.

                      • You just don’t look past the surface of things. Hate when people say “it’s not that deep”. How would you know if the water is cold unless you dip a finger in it? There are times to go with “it”, and a time to look into what it could be.

                          • If we all stop buying from them they will be forced to bring in real talent and leadership. As community we could cripple them. I did not pre-order and I am not going to buy anything from them or Sony for that matter. No more talk Joe. Save it we hear nothing but talk we want results that starts right now.

                            • Why am I paying if it's "just a game"? If there was no financial meaning, purpose or reason to stay around for 10 years, maybe it should have been free to play.
