The black shader controversy

I know I’m gonna cop it for this post, but this has bothered me for a while now so here goes. The common talking point that people always go back to is Luke Smith saying “If we gave people an all black shader, it’s all they would ever use.” I didn’t find his argument particularly strong then, and since the decline of his reputation, it’s very strange that people still throw that line around as if that was one of the only things Luke got right. However, it’s demonstrably false. Luke’s statement absolutely falls apart when you look at player characters in other games that allow deeper customisation. The majority of players prefer a brighter aesthetic, and in Destiny 2 I feel like just about every aesthetic has been catered to. Except one. Players like myself who enjoy the darker aesthetic get treated by the community like there is something wrong with us. I’ve had that line from Luke regurgitated at me over and over. This bothers me, because when I was growing up I was really into the goth aesthetic. It brought me genuine joy to be able to explore the macabre, to experiment more with clothing. But throughout all of that, I was constantly and relentlessly mocked. I didn’t really care all that much, but a lot of the hate was aimed at the fact my clothing was all black. It was pretty ubiquitous too. Pretty much everyone I went to highschool with would ridicule me for dressing in all black. So I just have a really hard time imagining that everyone I grew up with was secretly waiting to abandon the entire spectrum of colour to revel in shades of black. But enough, Bungie you have catered to every aesthetic imaginable. Please show some love to the goths, punks, emos and alternative people in your community. I get that this is kind of personal, and I’m sorry. But while I’m sure I’ll get mocked for this, this really does come from the heart. Having my aesthetic pushed out while everyone else’s gets catered to because there’s something wrong with what I like is pretty gross. This, from a company that styles itself on being inclusive.

  • Giving or not giving a shader out has absolutely ZERO to do with "InClUsIoN."

He said it would be all anyone uses, and that is in reality extremely accurate. Lets say they do make that, a vast majority of players will use it and never take it off just like people did with superblack in D1. Now how do they sell shaders to these people? They cant anymore, even if they remake all black paid shaders people still have the free version (unless its paid and even if it is thats 1 purchase and that player may never spend money on another shader again) There are tons of monetization issues for bungie if they add this shader. Id like to say im not on Bungies side, but from a business perspective it makes sense why they wont add one but will add close alternatives like in Y2 default BA shader and others that are black with other colors mixed in

      • There’s several shaders that can get your armor black. Just experiment with different ones. I have some all black armor weapon builds.

        • I think there're plenty of shaders to suit a player's darker looks; the issue is how shaders interact with armor once they're equipped. The stupid things so often look nothing like how they appear in the samples (is that the right word for it?) when you try them out. THAT really needs to be addressed in my opinion.

          • OP: thanks for sharing! 🫡 As mentioned below… You’re not the only one! 😎 It’s ‘Spec Ops’ black gear or Ninja black gear - that’s the real fantasy that colours one’s image, imho! Nothing wrong with that…it is a space magic fantasy game after all! 🎭 Anyway, black clothes have always been uber-cool - even black-hat cowboys! 🤠 Ease springs! 🫡

          • Problem could be solved with a shader maker feature. I mean, even though I'm colorblind, I love as much color as I can see, so I'd only ever use all black as an accent, but you know...I rarely play anymore, so kind of a non issue for me.

That's because in most cultures black represents death, and Bungie is desperately trying to be hip like Fortnight, and they can't do that with a bunch of dark edgy Hunters running around And I already use sinking feeling by default on almost everything, nothing says space zombie wizard like black and cyan with lightning effects

            • BungLe doesn't care. They know good and well that a black shader would absolutely NOT be all everyone would use. It really boils down to their insistence on only delivering half, at most, of what their players want, while forcing their own personal opinions and bias into their overpriced dumpster fire.

Everyone should be allowed to be as cringe as they please. If you wanna be an edgelord who wears all black and writes fanfic about vampires I say go for it. Who cares if people think you're unimaginative and have no sense of style? Do you boo boo.

                • We had one in D1, that's why. But you had to buy a separate Activision product to get it, if I remember correctly. Was a long time ago.
