Why Solstice Upgrade Cards Are A Problem

This post is from a reply I wrote. But I really disagree with some of the responses going around, and I'm bored so here is my opinion, I'm glad you all asked, thanks. I have no problem with extra cosmetics being sold, as long the game is first rewarding, and true to the genre. For the most part I think game is. If a buy year gym membership. I don't expect the vending machine, or juice bar to be free, it's extra, goes without saying. I paid to use the gym. If that gym sells me on a year of all all access membership to it's core facilties. I logically expect, all access to the gym's facilities. This is what Witch Queen Deluxe edition meant to many people that bought it. Many people obviously bought it with the " implied " expectation they won't be excluded from 1 year of this dlc content apart from the season pass. The problem with Solstice card is not the optional Upgraded Card, the problem is they tied it too content. It's how they framed it, as part of the event instead of the litteral optional cosmetic package it is. That's It. If they put this same package of optional cosmetics in the Eververse store as usual, and sold it for the same 1000 silver, it would have seamed like a great deal, and most people wouldn't have even cared. Regardless whether it's just optional cosmetics, because they unessarly tied it to the content, it splits players base and makes people feel excluded from content they expected to be a part of. In my opinion, the whole problem is just a clever, probably effective but kinda slimy marketing strategy; assuming it's not some in my opinion, a misguided mistake. People will feel pressured into buying the "content" to not feel excluded from thier peers, aka group think mentality and effects. With that being said Solstice 2022 sounds like banger of an event. I have no idea why it's named after a astrological event with the sun, perhaps it's another clue were getting solar 3.0 in a little over 1 day, it fits nicely doesn't it. The event features a bonfire bash, lots free stuff, lots of fighting, things exploding, what's not to love.

  • The problem with this analogy is that people who purchased Witch Queen Deluxe do have access to all of the “gym’s facilities” in the form of playable activities. Per the description in Xbox’s store, the Witch Queen Deluxe version comes with the following:
The Deluxe Edition includes Seasons 16-19, two Year-5 Dungeons, an Exotic SMG, catalyst, ornament, and an Exotic Sparrow.
In this analogy lets consider the included ornament and sparrow as if they were a free tote bag and water bottle given by the gym as extra promotional material when you sign up for you full-access membership. However this gym also has a swag shop (Eververse) with bumper stickers, compression socks and muscle shirts all bearing the Gym’s logo (cosmetics). This swag shop runs year round and even those gym members who paid for an all-access membership have to purchase these items separately. Let’s then say the gym also hosts a yearly free-to-the-public promotion to try to entice more people to join the gym by hosting an arm wrestling competition in the parking lot (Solstice) at which participants may receive a free water bottle with the gym logo and a picture of two people arm wrestling. In previous years they sold t-shirts, wristbands and baseball caps which could be purchased separately (event cosmetics) but THIS year they decided to bundle the items together in a package, saying “When you purchase the package you automatically earn the baseball cap and wristband, but the t-shirt will only be given away to those who win X number of arm wrestling matches.” (the upgraded Event Card) As someone who payed for full-access membership to the gym, are you suggesting that this t-shirt, wristband and baseball cap must be provided to you at no additional cost because your gym membership contract states that you are entitled full access to the gym’s facilities? This is the situation that exists with the upgraded Event Card for the Solstice event. Those who choose to can also purchase the possibility of earning additional cosmetics. No Witch Queen Deluxe purchasers or Season Pass holders will be denied access to the free activity (arm wrestling competition) for failure to purchase the upgraded Event Card as the free activity is free to the public. • Not interested in the event, far less upgrade cards; you can tell bungo are just testing the water with predatory -blam!- like this...
