Bungie: Well done with Crucible matchmaking

You guys are have achieved the impossible: You can't even ACCIDENTALLY match teams evenly. I mean 80% games are slaughters, wow, this is the height of gaming fun.

The Bigger Picture All this is contributing to the problem. 1) Being practically ignored for 2 years 2) Console MM Split again Old Gen is separate from Next Gen 3)a Broken Lobby Balancing Algorithm 4) No new maps for 600+ days 5) Stasis 5b) Crowd Control> Gunplay(bungies doing to sell Beyond Light) 7)The Pandemic(not bungies fault obviously but when it hit, Bungie was already behind the 8 ball with PvP) so it just made it that much more Glaring. It means Ppl working from home and not having all the tools to optimize the game at their immediate disposal. 8) PvP is F2P(Free to Play) Which means the lower the Money spent on time and in resources the more Profit Bungie makes. Throw all this in a pot and Stir until it boils over And you get a shit PvP experience. Any questions?

    • No SBMM = no fun. I know the sweaties always disagree, but getting into basic control lobbies with flawless Trials tryhards is seriously zero fun, and motivates so many of us to not play at all. See terrible pvp population for proof.

        • I find it ironic that the community pestered Bungie with wanting a strictly connection based system, and now that the matches at 80% unfair, now people ask for a hybrid system, Insert joke meme here

Sweating or snoozing with a rare balanced match.... I'd like more closely matched teams based on skill or at least the option.

          • I don’t understand how the company who came Up with the ranking system in Halo pvp is behind what we have now. In reality, there’s probably very few people in Bungie who worked on Halo, but even now, Halo 3 stands out as the sweatiest yet most fun online gaming experience I’ve had.

            • Now that its been established that matchmaking should be able to match people based off of anything but them actually playing the game, I think we can come to some kind of compromise. I would like to submit the idea that this magic mode be created and run with a special special focus placed on the kind of experience that people say they want in this thread. The biggest question I have is what should this mode be called? At first I was thinking something like "practice mode." Then I was thinking maybe something that's a little more honest like "bumper cars mode" or "midochlorians ruin everything mode" but then I realized that no matter whether it is or not it should probably just be labeled "SBMM." Its to the point where the mode needs to have big giant letters SBMM attached to it because its going to have to be a mode that's all about having the game digest nonsense that isn't true. So, SBMM fits that description pretty well and it has the extra added advantage of letting it be so that certain people get the most important win of all. Give these people a mode called "SBMM" and have the description be something like "where the sweats have to play tough 'evenly skilled' matches blah blah blah" or something like that so the pinnacle folks can feel like they've won. That's all that matters to some people is feeling like they won regardless of how wrong and ridiculous they are on the way to that victory.

            • This has been the case since CBMM. I dont even think a lone wolf mode would work. But hey its quickplay...I'm more concerned with the total lack of investment in pvp. Seems like an easy mode to make rewarding. Some maps, new weapons, emblems and grind achievements (kills, games, etc...).

              • It's worse than ever. My KDA currently 0.76. Being matched against 3-6 stacks of all Flawless /Unbroken players. What??? Meanwhile when being matched into such games I either leave immediately or after the first one or two minutes when it becomes evident my team is gonna get steamrolled. Not nice to the rest of the team? Indeed. But I can't be bothered anymore suffering from this abysmal matchmaking. Ironically the best matchmaking currently appears to happen in competitive. Freelance. Some chance to be matched against not only sweat Lords. Though my very first competitive match this season also was one against three Unbroken players. Anyway. I believe though the upcoming stasis changes might have some positive effects it won't change the situation significantly unless changes are made to matchmaking as well. Have fun and keep in mind - there are more important things out there than Destiny or D2 PvP in particular.

U guys are the definition of whining children ... if pvp is so laid back then why would u play it .. pvp is to challenge urself against another player . Why do u need a handicap .bunjis biggest success is halo .. a pvp game that this is based off of . When u go into a halo lobby u either get wrecked or do the wrecking .. no one in halo is complaining that this player shouldn’t play against them bec there better .. wtf stop with this coddling stuff it’s getting annoying .. bunji how come I suck so much do something about it , here’s skill match making , bunji the connection of these players are shit and I can’t win , here connection based matchmaking , bunji I keep getting stomped by good players ... but I thought h wanted better connection ... I do but I also don’t want to try , bunji nerf nerf nerf nerf nerf nerf. U guys are ruining the pvp in destiny ... if u do not want to be competitive then don’t play destiny bec its a game that challenges u in general ..thts what makes it a good game .. Thts why regardless of whats nerfed or what’s buffed we keep playing to overcome it .yet here we are complaining about matchmaking when we should be complaining about not having any pennicle rewards in comp or qp oh wait bec people suck soo much they pay someone to get items that will get nerfed later

Aside the Physics Server (Bungie controlled) There’s no hit detection servers in P2P That’s the point of peer to peer …it’s packet data fired across 6 players vs 6 players, how stable/unstable those players connections are, how they route & register the data Latency, packet loss, ping speed & quality, upstream etc & Bungie’s infamous 30Hz tick rate (30 cycles per second) update rate, ‘deciding’ who hit who first the tick rate of how many let's say "data exchanges" happen on locations, bullets, etc. So let's say the server exchanges data between the server, and the people with 30 ticks per second, then it might happen that you die around a corner, because according to the server (while on your screen behind the corner) half a second ago you were still running behind it, not already being there as shown on your screen. On the last tick you were on your way, like I said. If you would've had 60Hz ticks, or even 45Hz, then there would had another "location check" by the server by the time you got there, and according to the server you wouldn't have been hit by the one shooting you, because the server actually communicated to everyone that you were in fact behind the wall. Now, multiply that by 5 (other players, all potentially shooting at you, all in potentially different countries, using different speeds - damn, even two people in the same street using the exact same ISP/package can give different end results) Players teleporting back and forth and "laggy" movement on your screen while everything is perfectly fine on theirs, damage being registered after 0.5-1 second after you made a shot, enemies which have the time to shotgun you after you landed a melee which should have killed them and dying after you having upto 12 players (increasingly spread around the globe) on a different ping to each and every other player, the hit registration delay depends on how these game clients reach a consensus on what happened, or what the outcome of an action is—like did this shot hit or miss? In Destiny this leads to kill trades and the infuriating experience of getting shot around corners. It also causes hit registration to feel inconsistent when you fire at players from the enemy team Destiny 2's peer-to-peer setup, compare the upload traffic of Destiny 2 to games which use dedicated game servers, then it becomes clear how much more upstream traffic the peer-2-peer model generates. And that is where a considerable number of players start to struggle, as residential internet connections usually provide far less upstream than downstream bandwidth the quality of the players' internet connections, and the distance between them, have a direct impact on how responsive the hit registration feels. And the sad reality is that there are more players who are stuck with an upload bandwidth of 1Mbits than you might think. Then there’s the D2 ‘multiple hosting’ (different from the D1 model where 1 single player was host) D2 makes IP address of these players, the game makes it very easy to find out the country and city/town where they live. So, to then block or throttle the traffic between cheating client and their opponents, or to launch a DoS attack to affect online experiences, coupled with Bungie’s lack off urgency in banning these cheats Only adding to the issues with the introduction of Free to Play Hence the absolute shit show that is Trials etc And as of now(2021) they’re messing with the physics client (notice multiple combatants spawning randomly in Strikes/Battlegrounds etc)

                            • Never forget... There used to be a time when Bungie allowed you to see who had shitty internet connections in your matches. There also used to be a time when Bungie tracked KD, and not KDA; and having a good KD gave at least a little more incentive to play better. Now, there is no way to easily know if your going to be in a laggy match full of trash cans and potatoes, and there is zero extra incentives to get better in pvp. JS.

                              • You can play with the matchmaking by simply backing out of games that load 6 at a time. I.e at the bottom right hand corner you see how manh players load. If it loads 5 to 6 at a time. Back out. You wanna join matches that slow load. 1 or 2 at a time. I find these matches to be the most fair according to my skill level so that when i lose im not pissed that i walked into a match with a full squad of sweats and i can only get off 1 or 2 kills before i get eolled by their entire team. Same thing for comp matchmaking, if youre solo jump in the solo comp. If youre a team, then unfortunately they were better. But control and specialty matches, just reroll the matchmaking to your benefit. Its worth waiting to have an enjoyable experience. 😉

I mainly play PvP. To be more specific I mainly play Rumble. There is no mercy rule in Rumble, no team shooting and you get to have a hell of a lot more duels than in any other game mode and you get a decent mix of player skill across matches. To me it's the best mode available currently. If I win a game of Rumble and stay in the queue then my next match will have a way higher percentage of high skilled players. I only play Rumble so I don't have a trials or comp title next to my name - it is not uncommon after a Rumble win to be thrown into a lobby of unbroken/flawless stasis using, adept trials weapon using players with triple 100 stats on their armour. Games like this aren't fun. There's a big difference between a 1.3KD player and the 2+KD trials crowd. After winning a game of rumble my best bet is to go and play a match of control (as a solo player), get mercied by the inevitable 4-6 stack that roam around that playlist thinking they are good, then go back to my beloved Rumble playlist where the recent mercy loss will throw me back into a lobby where I am matched more closely with people near my skill. I can kill well more than i die in the majority of my games and this is as good as PvP gets for the non trials crowd IMHO. Also good to remember is that Rumble counts 1st, 2nd and 3rd as a win in Rumble and this will obviously have an effect on this crazy 50% win ratio Bungie tries (very unsuccessfully) to implement. TL:DR - Rumble Good, 6v6 Bad. Matchmaking sucks but can be manipulated so that you have a more even experience. Bungie aren't going to help you so help yourself. Last point : don't come into Rumble and just emote in the corner because you need a bounty completed. It is lame. it ruins other players experiences because one player spawn farms the emoter and gets a run away lead and the game (which is only 20 kills long) is over before half the lobby get their super. If you think the other Rumble players are happy about your idea of a "free kill" then you are wrong. It's selfish and ruins everyones experience.
