Feedback from a New Light player

*Edit: Added some stuff about the crucible too I started playing Destiny 2 with shadowkeep and the season of undying so I havent played that long. Mostly i've enjoyed my time in Destiny 2 up until now, but i'm getting close to a point where I dont see any reason to continue so i thought i'd share my thoughts about the game. I will touch upon a variety of subjects so sorry if it ends up a bit messy. Light level: I started out at level 750 and now i'm about 980. Looking back I wonder if the added 230 levels have changed the gameplay in any significant way. I dont feel any more powerful than before, and the game is plays pretty much the same as when i started. It might make a difference if i had tried 980 nightfalls or raids when i started out, but outside of that i dont feel more powerful now than I did at 750. Because of this I dont really feel any need to chase pinnacle gear and thats supposed to be at least part of the endgame content. Weapons/armor: For a supposed looter shooter there is a surprising lack of viable weapon and armor choices. 99,99% of armor i loot i end up sharding as pretty much nothing has higher stats than the season pass armor i got in my first season. I was excited the first time i got exotic armor, but since then i hardly even care what kind of exotic armor piece i wear as the buffs on them are so small that they hardly matter. I have all the possible exotic armor pieces for my main character and all of it rots in my bank except for one or two pieces. Similarly i was excited the first time i got an exotic weapon. It was the riskrunner and i liked the riskrunner quest. Since then i have found all exotics with the exception of some raid exotics as I havent tried raiding. Most of these now rot in my bank as they are situational at best and you can only equip one at a time. The riskrunner is still a fun weapon for killing reds but you can kill those easily with any weapon. What you want is weapons to kill champions and bosses. My inventory then consists of weapons i need to finish weapon specific bounties (which seems to be locked to bows, pulse rifle, rockets and linear fusion rifle this season) and the rest of the time i use a loadout for killing bosses and champions. Since boss design dictates that you need to stay at range and hide behind a rock only to pop out occasionally with a shot there is only a few weapons worth using for bosses. The exception is bosses that are so easy you can just rush without thinking. Because of boss design and champion mods locked to specific weapon types there are only a few weapons that are usable in content where weapon choice actually matters. The rest of the content is so easy it doesnt really matter what weapon you use. The end result is that I wonder why I bothered chasing weapons or armor and thats kind of a problem in a looter shooter focused around grinding out weapons and armor. Nerfs to the few standout weapons doesnt help as it just turns everything into a pool of mediocrity. The social aspect: This game has the worst tools for social interaction in any team based game i've played. The first thing i noticed starting out was that noone ever used the chat. In the easiest matchmade activities you are just put together with some other randoms that dont talk, and for the harder content you have nothing ingame to help you form teams at all. I found the lfg Discord and have gotten some good team through that, but in the end its just wierd that i have to rely on a out of game tool to find teams in game. Since everyone is doing their own thing its rare that i have found any player that i have played with for more than about 30 minutes. I'm in a Clan but its purely for the bonuses. I've never teamed with anyone from the clan i'm in, and when i look at clan recruitment pages it seems i must have x number of raid clearances and i dont have any. Simple things like going for a heroic public event is impossible to coordinate as there is a total lack of communication, and there is no ingame clue to what you need to do to start it. There isnt even any talking in socalled social areas like the tower and the farm. Inventory: The inventory, and the bank is way too small, especially if you actually want more variety in weapons used. If you had easier bank access it would help, but zoning to the tower all the time to get stuff out of the bank is not an option. Since you need some slots open for loot, you are pretty much restricted to bringing your top weapons. If i wanted to chase armor with different elements and the different gambit armors for all 3 characters there is no room in the bank. Bank size should at least be doubled. Crucible: I like the crucible even if i'm not exactly a dedicated pvp player. My worry is that the devs seem to struggle to balance this mode without affecting PVE, or making every character and weapon the same. I wonder if most exotics are so bland and boring to avoid them beeing "overpowered" in pvp. Maybe exotics should have seperate pvp and pve stats or just use large scaling factors between pvp and pve to avoid it. Its probably close to impossible to make everyone happy with pvp balance unless everyone is exactly the same so i dont envy the devs this job, but it should be possible to have more variety in pve. The mode also seem affected by a lack of variety in map design. Its sort of the same problem they have with PVE bosses. In PVE you want long range weapons with high burst damage to avoid getting instakilled or punched across to another planet (where you usually end up in some kind of pit). Most crucible maps seem to be designed for relatively short range combat that favours these kind of weapons. All in all i think the game has been fun as a "solo game" but i wonder about the longevity of it. At the moment i dont really see any need to continue playing once i finish the last solo campaigns, but i should probably make more of an effort to start raiding.

  • A bunch of generic experiences to sell skins and emotes. Bungie caught that microtransaction fever and never looked back. What a waste of a franchise that had a lot of potential.

    • Nice to see someone give feedback and care about the game. But as someone who has been here for years now, don't stay, Bungie won't listen and the more you play the more abusive grind you start to experience. Your last paragraph is pretty near to my feelings since the seasons started rolling out, just leave when you have the chance really.

      • Take it from someone who has up until recently played this game since 2015, walk away now, dont spend anymore of your time on this pos. Bungie have done nothing over the past several years but make this game worse and worse.

Your thoughts echo those of many long-time players, but your perspective is self-admittedly limited. If you do the social side of it - join a clan, raid, Nightfalls, etc - it's a different game. Much of the fun is the interaction with others. The best years of play in my experience was with clan members and raiding. Now I play solo, and yes, the social tools to set up a game are atrocious. Worse, sometimes if you do join a fireteam from LFG, players will kick you before the rewards screen, something they should not be able to do. I won't join an LFG team for that reason. (Someone will now tell me to form my own team - "I know, I know") I still play on the regular, but I enjoy it differently. Bungie has shown us time and again what we earn doesn't matter, because whatever their lips say, their actions say play is all that matters. So... if you are a progression player, that is, you want your character to grow, this is not the game for you. Bungie will always keep difficulty within a certain range, and no matter what you gather, no matter what setup you use, if you use it, they will come along shortly and nerf it. They want to force you to use ALL their stuff, whether you want to or not. Typical Bungie line from this week's TWAB:
We’ve changed the Aggressive frame sub-archetype to the Rapid-Fire sub-archetype to be more in line with other weapon’s established conventions and slightly reduced their effectiveness on Powerful enemies to give other weapons some more breathing room.
In other words, "we made these guns WORSE so you would be forced to use THOSE OTHER guns." Oh. So you're saying you made us weaker and we should thank you for it? I'll pass on that gratitude. And so it goes. I entered this game as a progression player, but I give up on that. There is no story in the game, really. When is the last time you remember making the last push through an activity, taking your game up a level, because you knew if you did not the storyline would be altered, beloved NPC characters would be impacted or die? (Mass Effect 1-3) That's right, never. The story never enters your mind when you play, because Bungie has not, at least since D1, made any of it seem to matter. But... this really is at its heart an FPS, so that's how the cookie crumbles. And that's the thing. In an FPS, the only thing that matters is gunplay, specifically gunplay as it pertains to PvP. And... our sandbox is steered through the PvP play experience for the most part. That list of nerfs this week? Mostly about taking special and heavy weapons down in preparation for Trials returning. Sure, you're going to see people add onto this "But PvE is already so EASY!", and for them at least, the argument gets shifted over to "No it isn't!/Yes it is!", but it changes nothing I've said. Our sandbox IS mostly driven by PvP play concerns, and this latest round of nerfs IS prepping the game for Trials. Long post, but here is my final thought... if you can put your mind in the place where the repetition of activity is something you can look past, and if you can come to terms with nothing in the game being ultimately worth chasing because Bungie will take it away from you if you like it, this is the game for you.

At this point I feel destiny would be better off if it was bought off from bungie and developed by a better developer But that’s just my opinion not saying bungie is bad at developing they just don’t seem to know what their doing anymore

Everything you said is commonsensical, many of us have complained about them to no avail, as there are enough Bungo fanboys, streamers and their blind followers that are fine with the status quo. Like many vets have mentioned here, the less attached you are to this game the better. Your time and effort will NOT be rewarded in this game, rather they will be disrespected at every turn. A few reasons why you should run while you can (to a better game): - everything you mentioned above - everything you worked hard to gain will be nerfed sooner or later - legendary weapons are as good as exotics in many cases, which was never the case in the past - most of bungo's efforts are focused on Everpurse. It keeps getting buffed while everything else gets nerfed - your power, abilities will also get nerfed for no reason, making you weaker and weaker - Guardian are getting weaker while enemies are getting stronger - At this point i wish i could play as a Taken Captain that can teleport without cooldown and kill guardians in crucible or gambit FROM BEHIND! - I think the devs might actually be hive acolytes working for Savathun, Xivu Arath, or Lord Datto (latter confirmed) - this game was funnest during Shadowkeep, it went downhill thereafter and continues along that trajectory... - Bungie is known for doing shady things in the past to get players to buy from Everpurse. Nerfing some weapons to narrow down the pool of weapon options, for which ornaments will be sold next season could be part of their shady strategy. They've been CAUGHT doing worse. Google it. - BIGGEST REASON TO LEAVE: is that there has been a HUGE talent drain from the company as all the people who founded, originally developed or cared for the game are long gone! Only the "corporate heads" are left. All they see is $$$$$! TLDR: Destiny 2 is a shell of its former self due to greedy and shady leadership, talent flight, pvp, fanboys, streamers and their blind followers. Because the people at the top don't care about your entertainment but only about $, the game will never live up its potential and will always disappoint.

                    • Im sorry 'little light' new player - even though you are 'new light' - you have been suckered long enough. You should move on to another game. Bungie intended for this so-called sequel to be accessible for 'casual' players and be a 'collections' game. Shortly after D2 released the player-base plummetted. Bungie tried for the first year to sustain this 'casual' experience only to fail. Then for some odd reason, Bungie over-corrected and made the game so over complicated and anti-casual that it was nearly impossible for players to complete any kind of 'collection'. Now Bungie are just in 'float' mode - adding sub-par content occasionally with very little effort. Every employee working at Bungie knows that they screwed up trying to cater to the SJW movement and make an all-inclusive casual gaming experience. But they are still intentionally using every chance for lucrative gain that they can. Basically - it was a failure at the start and a failure at every attempt at 'fixing' it. Now its just a cash generator that feeds on the foolish players that remain addicted to a broken shell of a game.

                      • When I read your critique I think two things. 1. That's pretty much spot on, I even have to wonder if you aren't a veteran complaining behind a new account because those have been some common themes of complaint for a long time. 2. Why the hell am I still playing it? Especially on a second account because I'm bored of what I have left to do on my main. Really, this is an introspective question I'm not being sarcastic. What about this game offsets all the bad stuff enough to keep me coming back?

                        • OP is a person with some MMO experience. I can tell baised on all his complaints are complaints that MMO players who have experienced standard features would be thinking almost immedately when they start playing D2. What is the point in power level if its just 'unlock ability to x content at normal difficulty?' when in PvE your overall damage and damage reduction don't INCREASE as you gain levels... you know... like any game under the sun does outside of areas that are forced syncing gear levels. No LFG in game, like seriously guys, WHY ARE WE OKAY WITH THIS? ITS A INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR AN LFG IN A GAME LIKE THIS FOR ALMOST A DECADE! Oh he talked about Destiny's terrible boss design fighting against the bulk of exotics. Yeah, only weapons that can deal quick burst damage will ever be any good in Destiny including against champions. Everything else even if they have an overall stable DPS will get thrown to the wayside because the game is not design around DPS uptime and when you do need to use a primary weapon, its against adds that are barely worth the effort to take out in one shot. HRMMMMMM! IS THAT AN ISSUE MAYHAPS????!?!?! To OP as well. Raiding is basically the same issue, only exotics that can deal burst damage are going to be useful. They hide behind immunity shields and every encounter is basically a puzzle mechanic where you jump through hopes to either resolve the puzzle before a forced wipe, or drop a boss shield and make them your b**ch for 20-30 secs while they don't really fight back before you wipe to another invisible enrage timer.

Like you, I also started as a new light player. But I played destiny 1 up until how of wolves which was all my pass was good for. That dlc was supposed to have a raid and it didn’t. After all the bs from destiny 1, I said I wasn’t going to spend another dime on bungie again so I only downloaded d2 because it was free. I ran through all that shit so fast on the 3 subclasses. I share all your points. I also did all 3 leviathan raids few times, did pretty well in comp (did bring back great trials memories), and got a lot of pinnacle weapons. Except I’m not going to kid myself when I say, it’s still the boring ass repetitive chore from the first game. Same old summer job feeling with paycheck cuts called nerfs. What’s the point of grinding when it’s so boring. And when you get your gun you invested so much time into, they nerf it essentially spitting on that investment. How hard is it to make a decent story? Halo had an amazing story, wtf happened? I think there’s more story in battle Royale games than d1 and d2 stories combined. So I downloaded division 2 for $3 and gonna give that a try when my schedule frees up. Don’t say no one warned you when you end up wasting time in destiny.

In the meantime I have some suggestions for you. Definitely try raiding and find some people to play with. I'd suggest you try The100.io. My other suggestion is to check out https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame The people on this forum are not very representative of the Destiny community. This game has a lot to offer, although it's not in a great place right now. But it has come back from some bad places in the past. Hopefully it can do it again.

                                • One of the reasons I stopped playing was the fact that I too have armor from Shadow Keep because I can't find anything better stat wise, and one of the armor pieces is blue rarity. So using the season mods are impossible (although I heard they might change this). Another reason, every pinnacle , or ritual weapon I've received has been nerfed. Every single one so far. I feel like my time investment to get these weapons was a waste of my time. I also can not agree with you more about the PL crap in this game. That number is bogus as far as I'm concerned. I also didn't feel anymore powerful as I was moving up. Its time to take a break and play some other titles. I'll come back eventually after some reasonable content drops.

                                • Everything you said has been an issue with destiny since the first moments of Destiny 1. In 5 years bungie has never been able to balance crucible, figure out a meaningful endgame for PvE, create good exotic armor and weapons that aren't made useless a few months later, or create good social tools. At this point I don't think bungie even wants to fix any of this.
