Trolls are a complicated portion of our community. some are inherently harmless, others, malicious. All of them carry certain identifying factors that can help you know who is, and who is not a troll
Identifying factor #1: Trolls are not interested in discussion.
This may seem illogical because we have all known renowned trolls to make posts. One thing you will notice when you comment on these posts is that the OP is not interested in an actual conversation or debate. all they want to do is cause trouble.
Identifying factor #2: Trolls only want to start trouble.
With this being said, I will launch into a slight dissertation. Krishna nor Burly are trolls. Krishna and burly were/seem interested in forcing us to think differently about the world. Trolls don't do that. all they are interested in is stirring up trouble. example #1 the infamous not sympathetic user. Every post/comment/reply he made was focussed on making trouble here. he was not interested in what we had to say.
Identifying factor #3: Trolls are consistent in these things.
Certain users have been known to troll from time to time, but they are not trolls. Trolls are consistent in their trolling. they don't want to add to anything. they don't want to talk about things, all they want to do is troll.
Now here are some examples of people who are not trolls.
People who make inflammatory comments or ideas but are interested in discussing those ideas. Not a troll because they are interested in discussion. Krishna/Burly
People who are not interested in discussion but are not inflammatory. Nil (sometimes)
People who are inflammatory and not interested in conversation, but only sometimes. f3 etc. etc.
all of these people may exhibit factors that may seem trollish but are not trolls

1 RespuestaEditado por Red Hugh O'Donnell: 8/17/2019 2:44:35 PMWe should really have something we spam a troll with, just to call them out on it and mark them as one. Also because it could be funny.

3 RespuestasSo anyone you like isn't a troll, but the people you don't, are. Got it.

1 RespuestaSince we're on the topic of trolls, I'd like to make note that a person who spams a certain type of topic over and over isn't so much a troll as they are a spammer. It's easy to post garbage peeps, don't praise a can of spam.

Positive and negative attention is still attention.
Identifying factor #2: Trolls only want to start trouble.
Well, not always. But first;
Krishna nor Burly are trolls. Krishna and burly were/seem interested in forcing us to think differently about the world.
Trolls by definition are out to stir up unrest for their own entertainment. These 2 are most definitely trolls. Acting intentionally dumb, albeit benign is still focusing on the factor #1 of, Their main intent is to get attention.
were/seem interested in forcing us to think differently about the world. Trolls don't do that...... the infamous not sympathetic user. Every post/comment/reply he made was focused on making trouble here. he was not interested in what we had to say.
Actually he was doing the same thing, just in a very intentional toxic manner. Same net result.
Identifying factor #3: Trolls are consistent in these things.
If you are on #Offtopic and never have trolled anyone in some manner, not even a little, then you're doing it wrong. It's part of the forum.
People who make inflammatory comments or ideas but are interested in discussing those ideas. Not a troll because they are interested in discussion. Krishna/Burly
Again, not remotely true. There is NO discussion value in either of their persona posts. It's always someone thinking they are going to 'change' or reason with the op, all while there is no reason that will be allowed. So they are in fact trolling. They have no interest in trying to do as you say "because they are interested in discussion." There is no interest in discussing things that have no merit for discussion. They have no intent of finding resolution. Edit; I'll make a list; -The easiest way to spot a troll is if their post is absolutely illogical. That isn't the defining factor, but it's a place to start. -They respond to every post you make, all in an effort to prolong the attention as long as possible. -Another is if they defend their stance with more illogical / incorrect rhetoric. -If confronted and cornered about their hypocrisy or whatever direction they're playing, they'll either deflect some other nonsense misdirection or double down with the same verbiage as they have been using. -They will not relent. Ever. -They never really get mad, even when confronted with absolute proof against whatever it is that they are trying to promote. They just continue to pound away at the same talking points, of which is all they really have. These are the basics anyhow.
