Ah, Bungie fails in basic psychology, the more you reward your player the more they'll want to come back. "Positive Reinforcement Positive reinforcement is using a reward for positive behavior to make sure the child continues with the desired behavior. It is the most effective method of shaping behavior because it is the most pleasant. For example, praise and reward are both used in positive reinforcement." "Positive Punishment If you present a negative consequence in response to negative behavior, you are using positive punishment. An example is using natural consequences – allowing a child to suffer the consequences for negative behavior – such as getting a bad grade when homework is not completed and/or turned in."

If you subscribe to some reduction that any form of operant conditioning performed intentionally or not is inherently abusively manipulative then yeah, I guess. Operant conditioning is far from the only trick in the sleeves of companies like Activision and I wouldn't claim, for example, that Zelda's chest jingle is similar in degree or intent to lootbox fan-fair. Skinner boxes are definitely not the bread and butter of healthy developers.

  • That why they have marketing areas specifically designed for that, on a curious note, EA and Amazon have some of the most "prominent" marketing departments, but as for creativity Alphabet and Facebook take the cake

  • I see you stopped at Psy 101 too. If we're just throwing it cliches here's a movie quote i like. If it was easy everyone would do it, it's the hard that makes it great. Positive reinforcement only creates entitled little babies that never want to earn anything.

  • If that were true, then No time to explain would be a memorable rifle in the Destiny lore, but most doesn't even know about its existence, and far worse, the grind behind it wasn't worth the effort at all, as literally any legendary pulse rifle did better, so you suggestion may apply for hand cannons quest which give an overpowered weapon designed specifically for crucible / gambit use not pve

  • It doesn't make the gun great, and that quest was super easy anyway. That quote is from a league of their own, it's about baseball, and it's about the experience being great . The worst section of destiny was when we hit Max light and has earned every exotic within a week or two. If they're no work required you have no appreciation for the reward.

  • I recalled that quest because like all quest I do'em solo, sometimes I found a strike team that helps me out but for the most part I do it myself and the last part of killin taken in the black garden was meant for at least 3 players and I didn't on my own that's why I remember the quest because the rifle was utter crap, even the equivalent that the exo girl gives you at the end of the campaign was much better (an example of positive punishment), now the point of "nothing to do" that you cite I can compare it with the Halo 3 /Reach multiplayer, where bungie created some variants of the game rules for the matches but there were no new weapons / mods /armors (those were cosmetics only) BUT players kept playing over and over and over again, even if they already had all armors and achievements, but why coming back? because it was fun for them, thats the positive reinforcement and I don't remember no one back then considering any aspect of the game "grinding", that creativity translated to D1 in different ways even one gave birth to the "sparrow racing league" but then again that have a lot to do with how you treat your playerbase

  • My Xbox account statics on how much I've played each game Destiny 1 - 56d 4h 56m Destiny 2 - 17d 23h 19m Not even close to a year, back on topic is considered a fail because of the amount of backlash they had every time they "fix" something (ok until a few months ago activision got the major part of the blame), this have reached a point in which is part of the standard of the community (defined as "salty / saltiness"), not even half of the players that had purchased a copy of the game are currently playing / or have played in the last months, so they are just keeping the hardcore playerbase, me I consider my self more a core player because as soon as I reach the cap I'll move to something else, so in the end of the day bungie is keeping a player that is willing to keep playing no matter how much they "punish" them and justifying ambiguous controversial decisions even if they're in detriment of the game experience they're looking for. Of course I can be bashing every post with pooposts about the subject they're addressing or I can put something that may contribute into seeing how far off the rails I think something have gone.

  • I always get a great laugh out of comments like this. Just cause someone tolerates the game for certain periods doesn't make any and all problems any less existent. Battlefront 2 was a failure and was horribly screwed up still kinda is but I still play since I enjoy the Star Wars visuals. Destiny 2 is riddled in the mundane and pointless but people play for the same reasons I do Battlefront. Heck most of the time anymore if I'm logged on at all to D2 I usually go to a planet and use it as a screensaver in my background. A game can be horribly broken and boring someone will still play. I mean hell people even still play Anthem.

  • Just pointing out simple toleration doesn't mean a problem doesn't exist. As stated Destiny 2 is filled with problems and some people tolerate them cause they enjoy other aspects. Demanding they quit playing because they point out a problem doesn't get us anywhere. As for teaching context clues I graduated years ago so I have no idea what they teach these days.

  • Not really. Total failure agreed, but when the game fails to incite people to do what its purpose is in the first place it is still a failure. As Destiny 2 is a Looter Shooter with overall uninteresting loot and far more then a few terrible game modes that its previous counterpart did well. In that sense it is a failure as a Looter Shooter, but as just a Shooter or Background noise for art it's not. If they are going to go the MMO route not only do they need to work on the Looter part but story and incentive as well otherwise it will fail that as well.

  • I'm stating Destiny 2 all throughout Destiny 1 I and many others were happy to move forward excited each DLC and think of Destiny 1 as a success. Destiny 2 however has had 3 improvements of NPC Ada-1 inventory, mantling, and Managerie. Overall it's just all been let downs and return of Destiny 1 stuff. We're trying to get back to baseline and some people are alot more hopeful than me Shadowkeep will finally push us past the baseline and finally start being a sequel others hoped Forsaken and Annual Pass would do that but overall they haven't. Hope can carry people a long way. Doesn't make the product any less of a failure.
