I'm not sure. What I am sure of is that people who do legitimately get offended spend far too much time talking about how much something is bullshit without ever explaining why. This just leads to a "he said, she said" kind of deal. Another thing is people can seriously lose their shit over things that genuinely do not matter. I mean actually not matter... Like the final season of Game of Thrones. I feel like people remind themselves of this kind of outrage whenever they see someone they perceive to be a snowflake, and it just reinforces their position and throws out an entirely legitimate grievance. The world is far harsher than I imagined it to be a few years ago. It's only since being with my mixed girlfriend that I've been able to even remotely understand the genuine racism she sees, and how she can feel overlooked on an almost daily basis. It's only since become friends with a gay guy at work I can see the serious affect it has on people when others lose their shit at a gay character being a game. I'd say it's easy to say the world is getting too soft when you don't need to pay attention to the amount of crazy things people do or say - sometimes without even thinking.

          •
Is the world getting soft?

opinion of this generation and last one
Pick one Parts of the world changing, becoming more and more technically advanced, and automated, but not everywhere. Third world countries still exist. Manual labor is a daily requirement to survive and provide for families. Even in first world countries, the majority of the population still has to work, toil, and earn what they get. It's not a generational thing. It's life. Now are there way too many entitled brats who understand little and expect everything handed to them? Yes! But they are not the world or just one generation. They have always been. Today we're just more aware of the vapid, stupid, lazy, slothful, moronic, narcissistic, spoiled, useless individuals and their seeming numbers because of mass media outlets in everyone's hands 24/7, 365. You see them everywhere because they are what people post about the most. You have to look for posts about people who still do the back breaking labor, and do their most to make things the best that they can. So no, nothing is changing except one major thing. Animosity It is growing more and more every day.

            • There’s an element of PC culture in some circles, sure. But I haven’t exactly been forced to tread on eggshells to avoid offending anybody. You can still have some absolutely filthy banter, and it’s not like locker room talk has changed. The memes circulating around on Facebook along the lines of ‘This image of a steak is offensive to Vegans. How many shares can it get?’ is just out of touch boomers trying to make outrage politics become a thing.

            • I guess it would depend on what's meant by "soft". Lately, when you hear soft, in the context of a group, it means that they are less accepting of hate and/or hateful speech, meant to demean others and make them feel less than. In this context, I'd say younger generation is sick of such division. However, it's clear from rise of hate groups, and hate crimes, in US and Europe over last two years, that we have a long way to go. Personally, if someone calls me "soft" bc I stand up to some idiot who only feels good when they are making jokes, or demeaning someone, bc of their race, religion, gender, or sex orientation, then it's fine by me.

              • Yes, and for the worst. People cry over every little insult, even if it wasn’t intentional. I’m going to go off on a limb and say that a big reason why so many people are becoming so soft is due to insecurity. I think some people are so insecure deep down that when the smallest thing contradicts their “beliefs” then immediately they’re on guard and get offended. I think people are also soft because they’re looking for these “insults,” which they think are an outlet to vent. Also, I hate the people that try to be the victim in a scenario, those people need to get some balls, like personally I never want to be thought of as “the victim” in any scenario. And that’s not to say all victims are wimps or anything, if you are sexually assaulted then yes you are the victim and that’s fine, people should come along side you and help you, but it’s the people to TRY and be the victim in a scenario that bother me. It’s pathetic.

                • I think we're less soft than we think. While some people on either side of the PC vs Anti-PC spectrum, so to speak, will blow up in your face over any little thing, a vast majority will recognize a joke when they see one and will calmly tell you if they think you've crossed the line. But, there's this illusion that we're soft because social media allows these minor populations on either side of the spectrum to quickly, easily, and (most importantly), anonymously engage in their agendas. So, they both start they're outrage politics. Most people will see examples of outrage politics and say "this is dumb" and scroll past. But the minor groups on both sides will lash at each others' throats.

                  • Yes and no. I think that as a society we have become more aware of racism/sexism and as such have become better at calling it out. That being said, there are those who are unable to distinguish genuine discrimination from imitation. Since we are more frequently calling out these instances of racism/sexism these false claims get called out more. So while more instances are being brought forward, I’m not sure that there has been a huge increase proportionally. There has been an increase in people looking to “weaponize” outrage culture - look no further than BuzzFeed. And some other radical/fringe groups. I don’t like to let the acts of a few dictate the patterns of most tho. I will say that anecdotally, I have certainly noticed an increase over the past 5-7 years that I am much more frequently disenfranchised or all together told that I don’t matter because I am a white male - and am thus a de facto racist sexist bigot. I believe that as a society we need to become better at distinguishing actual hate and intolerance from imitations. Is a sexist joke sexist? Yes, but the purpose was not malicious - it was to point out comical absurdity - and while a case could be made that it subtly undermines people...well, I think that in such instances we need to be able to “take one on the chin” and give the individual making the joke the benefit of the doubt (that they are not hate filled and intolerant, unless otherwise demonstrated). Again, there is no hard set rule to this, but by labeling anything that loosely resembles hate and intolerance as an “ism” you cheapen actual instances. I mean, am I really supposed to detest Kevin Hart for cracking a racist joke as much as I do Hitler? That’s absurd IMO. This mirrors how making false rape claims hurts actual victims by creating doubt in accusations. Inversely, I think that we need to do a better job of respecting each other. When did it become cool to be a disrespectful and indifferent ass who never tries? Throwing a burger back at a McD’s employee on the gram for clout doesn’t make you cool, it makes you a sociopath. If someone tells you that something offends them, make an effort to discontinue the thing, especially if it makes no meaningful impact on your life. On the other hand, if someone does something that offends you, give the person the benefit of the doubt and advise them, rather than assuming they are a complete monster. Rant over?

                    • I think outrage culture is being propped up by academic institutions and the media, and is given a massive platform to make a stink with social media, so a minority of people are able to have much greater influence than they should on our culture.

                    • The internet brings everything into the limelight. We are more aware of discrimination and inequality, and the people who practice it; we're also more aware of the people who go too far in their attempt to cull this malicious behaviour. In the so-called "real world," I have met many more of the former than the latter. I could argue that that means the world has become more malicious. But I also know that this would be a dishonest claim. Just like the "anti-SJW" crowd need to move past their illogical tribalism also. Some people are horrible. Some people respond by being horrible to those who may or may not be horrible - really, we all need to just end that cycle.

Of course it is. This is due to every generation of parents generally babying/pandering to their kids more and more to the point where it’s getting pathetic. If more kids had any direction in their life rather than just being left to sit around doing whatever they want all day the world would be a better place.
