Curious about Enter the Gungeon.

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from..! The gungeon? Is that, like, a dungeon that’s also a gun? Papika: “Ooh, or maybe it’s a dungeon inside of a gun!” A dungeon inside a gun? So we’ve gotta, like, shrink really tiny to enter? What if someone shoots? Hm.. Many questions.. Oh, but we’ve got more important questions to ask! Onto the thread! So, I need a good Roguelike game. I have a few, like Swords of Ditto, Dead Cells, and Spelunky, but I don’t really want to play any of them for various reasons I don’t want to get into. So, then there’s two Roguelikes that popped into my head. Binding of Isaac, and Enter the Gungeon. Binding is a little.. Much for me, so I’m wondering about the latter. I know the basics, and it seems fun, but I’ve got a few questions. A. How much transfers between runs? This is my problem with Swords of Ditto, and Dead Cells. They let you carry over too much stuff between runs, and it gets a little boring. B. Is it a twin stick shooter? If not, how does it control? C. How’s its longevity? Are the bosses random too? Does the game get too easy? Things like that. Tl;dr? Here’s my point! Considering buying Enter the Gungeon. See questions “A, B, & C” for my specific concerns. But, otherwise, just sell me on it. But that’s all for now folks! Jambuhbye!

While I haven’t played Enter the Gungeon, I shall use the Gungeon information I have picked up through osmosis to answer your question:
A. How much transfers between runs? This is my problem with Swords of Ditto, and Dead Cells. They let you carry over too much stuff between runs, and it gets a little boring.
Each character has a set loadout they start off with. While you can unlock some items in the Gungeon by accident to appear again future runs, there are other things that happen: -your characters collect hegemony credits that can be used to unlock some upgrades in a store near the entrance of the gungeon typically this means more items you can find in the gungeon. -you can unlock other stores by getting the shopkeepers out of the gungeon (and possibly other objectives too?) -if you can get the right items, you can unlock a true ending for a character that will give them an upgrade. -there’s some unlockable characters too
B. Is it a twin stick shooter? If not, how does it control?
Seems to be a twin stick shooter.
C. How’s its longevity? Are the bosses random too? Does the game get too easy? Things like that.
I don’t know how many levels there are to the game, secret floors included. What I do know is that the bosses are random, but seem to be random in a degree of tiers except for a few bosses that are set to certain levels. Whether or not the game eventually gets too easy is probably dependent on if a bullet hell can eventually get too easy, because boss fights are comparable to bullet hells.

A: you start the game with the same loadout every time: your class item (ammo drop, lockpick, etc.) and a gun or 2. B: not sure, i use m+kb C: bosses are random from a set of 3/4 for each stage, then one final boss, and the "past" boss. i still havent fully beaten the game after a lot more time than im willing to admit edit: also you unlock items to find like in dead cells

      • If I remember right, there's a gun that looks like a bullet and shoots guns out of it.

        • I know you said Binding of Isaac is a bit much for you, and you don't like gore, but it's probably the best roguelike you can play. Brutally difficult, though. As for Gungeon, I don't know, I haven't played it.

            • A. Little to nothing transfers. You can unlock items to find in future runs, but that's it. You can unlock an elevator to skip you to a certain floor in your run, and using the elevator will supply you with one other weapon besides your starter weapon, but it's nearly always better to do a full run because 99.99% chance you'll get better weapons doing a full run than starting at a certain floor. B. Yes. And it controls very well while giving you the option to map your own controls. C. Enter the Gungeon will give you plenty of play time. You can play for quite a long time without reaching the floor five boss. The game starts out excruciatingly hard until you figure you get used to controlling and everything, but it doesn't ever let up on the difficulty. Also, there are certain bosses assigned to each floor, and whichever ones you fight in any particular run are random, except the floor five boss. There are also, minibosses that have a chance to spawn.

              • [speaking as someone who owns the game and has sunk a good amount of time into it] A.) pretty much nothing at all besides the stuff you unlock to potentially find in future runs, and also the challenge modes B.) yup, top down, twin stick, good feel to it C.) this game (should you choose to devote yourself to it) will give you hundreds of hours of quality content. There are some unlockable things gated behind kind of a lot of RNG but its not too distracting from the maim gameplay. If you get the opportunity to get this (especially if it’s on sale) jump on it dude, it’s one of the most well-crafted non-AAA game I’ve seen in quite a long time, probably not since Minecraft 1.6.4

If it’s rogues your looking for, might i suggest necropolis? It’s a cartoony, dark souls like game. I think it’s $30 full price but I’d recommend getting it cheaper. It’s been out for some time so hopefully the price has gone down a bit by now. I’ve never played gungeon so I can’t say anything about that.

It’s been a while, but iirc, the only stuff that transfers are unlocks. Yes twin stick. Not easy.
