If you quit Gambit, you should get banned from playing it that day.

Playing with randoms is always going to be a hit or miss. You'll get good ones that know what to do, you'll get bad ones. But the worst thing about playing with randoms? The ones who leave. The quitters. The sore losers. I don't doubt Bungie will probably change it so that player can join a game in progress when people quit, but I don't think that's enough to solve the problem. It's about time Bungie comes down hard on these losers. It's time to hand out the bans. Quitting in quickplay is one thing; it's not a major loss when you still have a team of 5 left while you wait for another. But quitting in Gambit? Time is of the essence, and everyone needs to be constantly on the go and working. Losing one guy is one less player helping take out enemies, collect motes, clearing the blocks, invading, everything. There are too many roles that need to be fulfilled for one guy to leave and wait for someone is to replace them, should Bungie implement players joining games in progress. If you quit Gambit, there should be consequences. At the very least, quitting one game results in a warning that last for 24 hours. If you quit again in those 24 hours, you get a 24 hour ban. And that ban doesn't end at reset, you have to stick out a full 24 hours as soon as you quit. This is probably harsh, but there must be some kind of penalty. Anything. If you don't want to play a game of Gambit to its fullest because you're a sore loser, then by all means, don't play it. The game will help you not play it by banning you. EDIT: Looks like Bungie is listening, Travel bless. https://twitter.com/mursamune/status/1036066708090314752
We're aware of unbalanced teams caused by players leaving matches in the Gambit Preview playlist. On 9/4, when Forsaken launches, join-in-progress will be enabled on the Gambit playlist. Additionally, if a player leaves a match they'll get hit with quitter penalties
As for the "but what if I get disconnected" argument, I think it's safe to say the majority of the time you're playing Destiny, you're not getting disconnected. Yes, Destiny has its hiccups with errors that will screw you over, but they're not happening that often to not warrant these penalties taking place. If you so happen to get disconnected and get a warning for leaving, take a break from that game mode and do something else. If you're getting disconnected a whole lot in a short period of time, its time to look into your issue.
