What’s the perfect length for a video game campaign? Is a short game you can knockout quickly your preference, or a massive open world that takes hundreds of hours to complete?
I ask this because I’ve been questioning it lately myself. I love huge games, but getting bogged down on one game when there’s other newer stuff coming out can also get annoying. As much as I love huge games, there’s definitely something satisfying about beating a game in just one or two sittings. I currently find myself playing Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and while I’m loving it, I can’t help but think that I could’ve beaten at least 5 games from my backlog in the amount of time I’ve spent with it, and I’m only maybe halfway done.

It depends because games can have hours of gameplay but have it be repetitive and boring. To that I'd much rather prefer something like SSOD, short but fun as -blam!-
-
It really depends on the game type. I don't want to play 100 hours of a call of duty campaign, that's for sure.
-
I guess it depends. Back in the day Ace Combat 5 had 30+ missions in it. So I guess that would account for about 15 hours of gameplay? Also Starfox Adventures was open world, but took about 7 hours to beat (not including any of the little sidequests, which if you did would then raise the total to about 9 or 10 hours). Starfox 64 you can beat in 2 if even that. Just some games from the past that I like.

Depends RPGs → 60ish MMOs → 100+ other → 10-20ish

At least two weeks of casual play for story, and replayability until the sequel/dlc released. I like getting lost in a game's story and lore. I also prefer choosing my game type for pvp. For multiplayer-only games, I need at least a bit of backstory for the characters, and lots of options for character creation/customization.

My preference is keep me playing as long as possible and entertaining me. Whatever that number is. That is my preference for each game.
Halo 3 kept me occupied for 3 years.. doesn't seem many games can do that anymore.
I expect 40 from RPGs at the very least. Anything else can be as long as it wants depending on what it’s doing. Not every game benefits from being long, after all.
-
Depends on the game but if I’m going to buy instead of rent I expect over 15 hours.
-
About 40-50 hours for story, and maybe another 20 hours of side stuff for RPGs. More than that and I tend to not get into the games as much because of the massive time investment required to "get my money's worth". I have a job and a family afterall. For shooters I'm okay with a 10 hour campaign so long as the MP is solid. I get bored of FPS campaigns if they're longer than that.
-
I'm currently swamped, I'm trying to balance AC origins, Horizon Zero Dawn, Witcher 3 New Game Plus, and I'm finally getting around to finishing final fantasy 15. All of these are huge games plus going to my classes and job makes completing them all seem like such a daunting task

Kind of depends on the game. For open world games i would rather the main campaign be fairly long (which for games like skyrim and fallout doesnt seme to be the case unfortunately). For first person shooters like halo i would prefer an 8-10 hour campaing, rather than the standard 6. It allows for the short to be fleshed out a lot more.
-
Skyrim length. So unlimited.
-
For campaign based games, about 10 hours is the sweet spot for me. Something that can be finished in 2-3 sittings. For linear RPGs, 40-50; any longer I find myself losing interest and impatient for the ending. For open world games, well; I'll play it as long as I'm engaged in it. Sometimes it's months.
-
Honestly as long as it’s a quality story then I’ll play it however long it is
-
HZD did it perfectly. 60+ odd hours to do everything. It wouldn’t work for lesser games but they story, gameplay and combat were superb. When you finish, you’re satisfied. It doesn’t have that replay ability of other games unless you go for new game + on ultra hard, but it doesn’t need it. Like a good book that’s the first in a series, you finish, put it down and patiently wait for the next instalment.

3 RespuestasI don't really have a preference. I'll keep playing as long as I'm enjoying the content.
-
2 RespuestasIf I'm playing a game where story is the main focus then i honestly need it to be 8-10 hours. It's the reason i don't finish most open world games. After awhile i get disengaged, then if the actual gameplay isn't that great i just don't wanna play anymore. It's why i call most of everyones favorite open world games or single player only games overrated, if it drags on too long or has boring gameplay then I'm not finishing it. 8-10 hours is perfect.
-
If I like a game enough I will but hundreds into it. A campaign, though, I feel shouldn't be longer than 15 hours if that. With DLC maybe. But other than that it's just too long. Of course there should be content out of the campaign as well.
-
2 RespuestasDepends. For RPGs I think the main story should be no longer than 10 hrs without side quests and level grinding. FPSs should be shorter. MMOs and MMORPGS should be much longer because of the type of game but not ESO all 4 main campaigns length. Jeez those take forever. This is for main campaign though, not side quests and such

Somewhere around ONE TO FOUR HOURS! That's a reference if anyone's wondering.
KUPO!!!™
No preference. A game should be as long as it needs to be. Some of my favorite games were really, really long like the Mass Effect Series and really, really short like Gone Home.
-
1 RespuestaFor me personally it depends on the type of game it is. If it's a RPG I would prefer about 8 hours. If it's a fps then I would prefer if it's around the 6 hour range.
-
Can’t decide between 25 to 50 and 50 to 100

Depends.

6 RespuestasI like games that are long enough to tell a story (with meaningful development), and to really get a hold of the lore, and mechanics. I also like games that emphasize player choice, and support multiple play styles. So the game needs to be short enough that it can realistically be replayed. I love games like the Witcher 3, but I just don't have time to replay it with a different build. In fact, most RPGs have this issue I find. I'm currently on the last stretch of Persona 5, and honestly...I'm just playing to find out what happens. I don't care about the combat anymore, I just wanna finish the story. I'm not gonna go back for NG+ cause I just don't have the time (currently at ~120 hours). For reference, most of my favourite games are 20-60 hour games that can be replayed 2-4 times. For example: Bioshock (1 and 2) Dishonored (1 and 2) Prey Deus Ex (HR and MD) Doom The Last of Us MGS3
