In that scene, the private investigator says that they will need to ask the client for more money and his partner says that they don't need too and they were already paid for the job. The PI says that the money that was given to them was nothing, we bait the client for a few weeks, spend that money and the ask for more money because they found some "new" leads in which they never did.
