Before you judge, listen to Habilis' words...
Society needs religion, as much as it needs science. Many think that science is next step, is higher stage of social progress. Science, people say, is inherently rational but religion is irrational. Religion uses faith to believe in things that cannot be seen, but science builds more knowledge only from things that can be seen, or seen indirectly. Science is rational, because it physical. Religion is irrational, because it metaphysical.
Arguments boil down to what things can build our knowledge: observations? Or intuitions?
People in modern society tend to choose observation of physical universe as only path to reasonable knowledge. Religion, they say, makes people irrational and ignorant. They say man who does bad things because he thinks bad thing pleases god, is worse than man who does bad things because it seemed like most rational choice. But Habilis argues that both men guilty: one man, for not questioning god, the other man, for not questioning science.
Habilis does not think science is religion.
But Habilis thinks many who reject religion replace their faith with science, because they failed to understand both science and religion. When religion is very bad it is used as tool to control society. Science, when it is very bad is also used as tool to control society. Habilis is not advocating conspiracy theory or kooky ideas like Flatman. Habilis is simply stating social reality: society seeks to control individual people. The standards of society to not come from devious plans of one person or group of people; social standards come from all people thinking and expressing ideas at once. All people have opinions and ideas about reality, some ideas agree, some oppose, and some blend together in strange ways. Society is like big orchestra where each musician plays his own tune. But like a group of separate people talking randomly in restaurant: natural harmony emerges. Some times noise of people increases, sometimes decreases. It has rhythm.
Social standards are like this rhythm: they emerge from many random forces all happening at once. In old days more voices supported religion, so religion became the tool that society used to control society. Then, many showed problems with the religion that people believed: they showed how science and reason made more sense than the religious ideas that controlled the people. Slowly, people saw that religion was flawed, and science seemed clear and sensible. Today, most people who live in Western society will say science is more "sensible" than religion.
But remember what habilis said earlier? Social standards are random, like many voices in the noisy restaurant that find harmony without trying.
As more and more people think science best, they will forget why science best. They will believe it like the old religions, but will not understand it. Just like religion became the tool that society used to control itself, it is possible that science will become the tool that society uses to control itself. If this happens, science will die. Rather than a path to truth, it will become the path that all men must follow, but do not know why.
This is why society needs religion: it needs the good things religion can offer, just as it needs the good things science can offer. And before you say religion gives nothing good, ask yourself what gives people sense of community and sense of purpose? Religion can do those things best. Just read about ancient temple named Gobekli Tepe:
We used to think agriculture gave rise to cities and later to writing, art, and religion. Now the world’s oldest temple suggests the urge to worship sparked civilization.

We all know and remember bad things religion has done. Not hard to find. But habilis wants to remind offtopic of the bad things science has done. AGAIN, Habilis is not anti science, Habilis seeks fair truth and fair understanding. This is just to remember that science, when missunderstood, has potential for much evil. Sometimes the best things, like science and religion, become the worst weapons in the hands of ignorant people:

Some people may not need religion, but all people need something to believe in. Something to think and dream about. For me it's the after life. Is there an afterlife? It's something I look forward to finding out as the days go by. Many days hopefully lol

I'm just not religious, but I am scientific

I politely disagree.

1 RespuestaI'll be honest with a TL;DR, but I think society doesn't need religion. People do.
-
Faith is all well and good but organized religion is bad.

Nice post. I've said it many times. I have plenty of evidence for God. Unfortunately, I can't really share my subjective experience with others. We live and interact with our world as subjective beings. I've always thought it a little silly to demand nothing but objective proof. We aren't robots. We aren't objective.

Maybe society doesn't need religion, but I recognize that it is capable of both good and evil. I don't think the world would be better off without it. To each their own, and let's all live in peace.

People will always be irrational so there will always be religion.

5 RespuestasI wholeheartedly believe religion is needed in a society. Since for one, people who practice a religion, and thanks to scientific studies, are happier and more charitable than those who don't practice a religion. If people are happy, they get shit done, if people are more charitable, it helps people which in turn helps society grow. But this part:
We all know and remember bad things religion has done. Not hard to find. But habilis wants to remind offtopic of the bad things science has done.
I want to include the fact that the same people on this site who condemn religion and brings up the crusades are the same people who have an aneurysm because someone posted Destiny content in off-topic. How can someone condemn religion for killing people who are different, when they send death threats and out people who simply say "Destiny is cool."
and the "But I'm joking" doesn't work here. If you do this shit for "fun" you're no better than a religious person outing someone who is gay.
26 RespuestasHere is where most relgions are the problem People start to think fuking up the planet is OK because they will be sent to their respective afterworld anyways. If man only focused on the physical, people would stop thinking "ah, a hobo. God got you fam" when nothing will happen. A bold statement, but i am sure MANY world problems could be dealt with today If people put their own minds into solving problems instead of passing off to higher power. Cah-peesh?

I'm not sure why, but l've begun to imagine these posts in a Russian accent. Increases the quality, no?

To bad society is becoming more like a jazz performance a bunch of people trying to go solo at the same time.

I'd love to read this... Too bad I can't.

8 RespuestasI FULLY agree that man needed religion to form society...But I also FULLY believe that like all old things we needed at the time (ox for plowing, horse and buggy for transportation, candles for lighting, telagrams for communication) we have moved past all of those and science gave us all that... Now I'm not saying religion is bad, religion does LOTS of great things for LOTS of people...That being said we don't need it as a species... Think about how far we have come in just the past 100 years, now think about how much further we could be if we didn't have such resistance against progress or so many denying science and actively trying to slow or rewind progress...

Religion falling out of favor doesn't automatically mean science becomes religion. You don't look at a tree and know the leaves perform photosynthesis, and think "cuz science" like science is an actual force of nature or something. You know the leaves perform photosynthesis because you were taught that knowledge that someone figured out, a discovery that can be repeated. And reverified. You're basically saying that knowledge can be used as a shackle for the masses. Which makes no sense.

24 RespuestasSo the good points of religion outweigh the bad points so we should still have religion? No...

Religion has absolutely nothing to offer me.

2 RespuestasReligion was a necessary development for our species. While I don't think society explicitly needs religion to function, I do think that society can't function without religion. At least as far as human history is concerned, it is inescapable.
