Opinions on Sidearm usage. Please share!

Edit: I could NOT BE ANY HAPPIER WITH THIS POST. We've been top 5 trending for several hours. Lots of opinions and conversations flowing. Salt has been kept at a wonderfully low level. I love when the community can come together and really talk things out. This is what destiny needs, and I'm so thankful and proud of every one here for being so passionate about the game we all love! GGs everyone. [WARNING: OPINIONATED WALL OF TEXT INBOUND, Please feel free to skip and share opinions as you like] So, lets talk about the sidearm, and it's overbearing presence in the crucible. First off I'd like to state the obvious fact that sidearms are NOT OP and were quite rare before the update, aside from nlb users, and our dear friends TrueVanguard and Kjhovey. Their TTK's range from a minimum of .6 to a maximum of .96 dependant on archetype and headshots landed. As impressive as that sounds their range holds them in a balanced position as powerful short ranged duelers, meant for back up and shotgun countering purposes, and work exactly as they should. Now, and this is only my opinion, the distaste for sidearms at the moment isn't because of their power, it's simply that the ammo economy forces us into using them. A sidearm has the ability to over power any primary with ease, within its optimal range. When you have no special, being a common occurrence in the current state of things, you are simply at a disadvantage to a sidearm user. Ammo persists, more ammo is reimbursed on respawn if empty, and as it seems all this points to MORE slaying potential. This forces many into a position of "use this or do worse." Did you enjoy being an aggressive sniper, despite the horrid nerfs? A shotty warrior maybe? Maybe you were that elusive fusion main who loves to go for crazy plan c swaps, or cross map people with a saladins. Maybe you feel upset that your aggressive playstyles were almost taken from you entirely, especially in the 6v6 playlist. You have every right to be. Because forcing someone into a style of gameplay they don't enjoy IS NOT BALANCE. It is a lazy and unprofessional attempt to stir the pot. Bad move bungie. You may have forced primary fights, but you've removed a large portion of the fun for many.

  • I just do my best to adapt but I'll still play my game and I won't let a particular meta dictate what weapons I'll use. I like using different shit even at the cost of my k/d because it's fun trying different load outs and testing new weapons. That's my favorite thing about pvp. Getting something new , leveling it up and trying it out.

    • I just wish fusion rifles could spawn with a little ammo too. They've always been underdogs in PVP, and require a lot of skill to properly use. No reason they had to suffer because of what shotguns did. Choosing between fusion rifles and sidearms would be a fantastic change of pace from what we went thru in Year 1 & 2

    • Sidearms were buffed to compete with shotguns in a previous patch then shotguns were made pretty much obsolete. They are consistently outgunning ARs and Handcannons at a pretty decent range which to me is bs and is the reason I have not bothered running an AR and I have put my Eyesluna back in the vault. It's a boring meta, the last one was annoying but at least it wasn't this boring.

    • I personally can't stand using sidearms, it is the least interesting weapon type to me. Currently in elimination style game types (the type I currently am trying to accel at) it makes literally no sense to use anything but a sidearm past the first round.... I use primaries plenty, I'm a fusion rifle user by choice. It pains me to be forced (logically) into using a weapon type that I abhor so much. I have deleted some of the best rolls and highest stat armor with sidearm perks, it's a panic weapon... I really hate using it. In elimination matches major firefights are initiated long before 60 seconds which means that 80% of the time if I run my preferred loadout I'm at a complete disadvantage, yeh yeh learn to use a primer... I know, if I spec for long range scout though I am playing with my pants down if someone gets close.... If they don't do something to change it I am positive I will be moving on as this meta is really just no fun to me... it is the worst meta ever and I've played through them all.

        Currently side arms consist of 52% of special weapon kills. No land beyond counts as a special weapon. If you count NLB as a primary (because it's the most common primary now) and remove it from the special weapon stats 68% of special weapon kills this weekend in trials were with side arms. That's a higher % than the absolute heyday of the matador. Fusion rifle usage is at about 0.85% and shotgun is at 2.85%. Snipers are at about 45% because of NLB mainly and ice breaker as a distant second because they circumvent the special ammo change. People are calling this a 'primary weapon meta'. When the fact is that it's simply not. (And if you hate sticky grenades, there were 3x as many sticky grenade kills this week than the entire month previously- so that's fun) I think side arms needed a place in the meta. I also think that most special weapon types should consist of between 20-30% of kills. Not have one type having more kills than the other 3 put together. Edit: this isn't my opinion.         • What about the synth method? Beginning of every match, pop whichever you want ammo for (special or heavy) Special sticks until all used up, heavy disappears if you die. Should be able to pop 2 synths each game. Be a nice way for people to grind for armor with the weapon increase you want, and your tier levels. No more crates, just pop and go.

          • I hate sidearms in every conceivable way. Boring to use Kinda too strong considering they are sidearms Boring to watch someone using them(I can't watch streamers that use sidearms. Just so boring) Annoying as hell to play against Essentially cretaes the same problems shotguns did before. (Rush with a shotgun -> rush with a sidearm)

              • I highly dislike special usage in general - this includes special weapons that can be equipped in the primary slot.

              • I thought "maybe I'd use a sidearm this match.." half way through the match and I had 127 special ammo rounds. [spoiler]That's sooo typical of Bungie's idiotic meta creating bullshit[/spoiler] C'mon man - I used fusion rifles almost exclusively in the last meta, why screw my game up because people complained about shotguns? Why couldn't they just fix shotguns? The answer is simpler than anyone thinks: Because Bungie doesn't care about Destiny 1 anymore. The sandbox team is full of noob developers getting their feet wet with programming and problem solving. This game doesn't mean shit anymore, you can't take your characters to Destiny 2 and that means that any further development in this game is pointless.

                • Sidearms are overused because they circumvent the special reduction. Bring back special but take away reserves to make t a coveted resource. It could be preserved when you die but you could only have 3 or 4 rounds slugs in a shotgun or a clip for snipers. I like the meta, definitely, only I think it could be changed and it would be even more balanced.

                • I'm a fan of the sidearms but they need to bring them inline with the other special weapons. Like when you die, you lose your ammo but you respawn with the ammo that is provided through the sidearm intrinsic perk, reserve ammo. I think they should also introduce the perk, reserve ammo across most weapons. I would also like for Bungie to finally introduce sub machine guns to the game. Make them like a slightly weaker doctrine of passing but can cause lots of flinch in the right range.

                • I use a sidearm now but I only use it situational. Sometimes I'll go a whole match without even pulling it out but I do feel the need to have a special weapon ready to go if needed.Therefore I carry them now because I don't want to be preoccupied with finding ammo on respawn.

                  • Bungies goal was never to encourage primary encounters. They've always wanted sidearm to be relevant. It just took them forever to make it possible. When HoW dropped they thought the introduction of a new weapon type would be enough to merit use. Didn't really happen. In TTK they brought in more sidearms, gave them a buff and nerfed shotguns. During a livestream they even said something along the lines of "sidearms being a thing". Still didn't work. They THEN nerfed special ammo crates(less crates around maps) during the lifespan of TTK going onto CoE and talking about how sidearm ammo wasn't affected. This didn't work either and people just did the sidearm/icebreaker swap to get around that. Then we got more nerfs to particular special weapons before RoI. Shotguns and Snipers still going strong and sidearms STILL in the backburner. This past update was the last straw. They COMPLETELY knew what they were doing by overnerfing special ammo again. They wanted sidearms to "be a thing" since the beginning. I mean, you have to commend their effort. When Bungie wants something done, they keep on trucking. Even if it takes 2 years, they'll get it done. If only they put that much effort into balancing ALL weapons in general instead of trying to make one class of weapons stronger. Lol

                    • I love my sidearms and have used them in crucible for a while now. Was kind of hoping no one would notice how epic they are :P

                      • I chuckled at reading this. I would hope this proves that a primaries only primary playlist would be almost pointless. No one would play it because special weapon spam is the only way the majority want to play. Bungie wants to make primaries used more...but absolutely refuses to make primaries powerful.
