I always see people asking "who won the debate?" But you cant win a debate, you can only perform better than your opponent right?

I think that's what winning is inferred as, doing better. You're not going to prove that your position is correct, and you're (likely) not going to change anyone's mind.

No there is no such thing as "winning" a debate. The whole spirit of a debate is to share ideas and viewpoints so the parties that participated in the debate leave the debate with more knowledge than what they went in with. Unfortunately, we have lost the meaning behind a debate and turned it into a spectacle to watch on TV.

Editado por Cannon011: 10/7/2016 4:11:34 PMWho needs a debate? Bring back dueling pistols. Much more civilized and less painful. Also quicker and more efficient, leaving less doubt as to who's right. Not to mention more entertainment and considerably less boring.

People win at sports so let's compare the two. In sports there's a time limit and specific scores for specific things. Do we score debates? I guess so. If I make a point that you can't refute, or have a piss poor rebuttal to, then in the audience's eyes I have won a point - there is one reason why my argument should be believed over yours. Over the course of the debate these arguments build on each other (bigger / more important points weighing more in the audience's mind). There's usually a time limit as well, especially on TV or in a lecture hall, although - like monopoly - they can go on and on and on, on the internet for example. At the end of it, one person's argument will have been more persuasive than the other, or they will have been about the same. In this way we can have both winners and losers, and even a draw. Seems to me like debating is like tennis but with words.

Editado por Kamots: 10/5/2016 2:29:34 PMIsn't that what winning usually is? One side performs better? The only difference is a relative lack of a benchmark for that performance.
