Is there intelligent life elsewhere in the universe?

If not, why do you think so? If so, have they been here to visit? EDIT: Very awesome responses here, thanks. I'm pleasantly surprised that there has been basically no hate exchanged despite the varying outlooks. I've lost a lot of faith in humanity due to some recent interactions on the internet, but you all have helped to restore some of it by peacefully exploring this concept. Thanks.

  • Mathematically it's undoubtable that there has to be life elsewhere besides earth.

    •
Is there intelligent life elsewhere in the universe? If not, why do you think so? If so, have they been here to visit?
First we need to be sure that intelligent life exists here. I guess if we're the ones who are defining "intelligence", that we would claim that we have it. Based on the astronomical numbers involved (please pardon the pun), it seems incredibly unlikely and improbable that this one planet orbiting this one star (when there are billions of galaxies each with billions of stars) is the only place in the entire universe where molecules have organized themselves into self-replicating structures that given enough time would increase in complexity to the point where we find ourselves. As to whether or not extraterrestrial life has visited this planet? Well, considering how long the planet has been around (and the fact that humanity is only the last and most recent "tick of the clock" in geological terms), it's "possible" that this planet may have been either observed or visited. The probability of it is lessened if we only think about the extremely brief period of recorded human history. That's not even taking into account factors such as the incredible distances between stars, the fact that we don't know if FTL travel is possible, or the value of L in the Drake Equation (the typical lifespan for an intelligent civilization). And then there's the question of whether or not we could recognize a non-terrestrial intelligence (who if sufficiently advanced, could probably make their presence undetectable to us) or whether we ourselves would be seen as "intelligent" by such an advanced species, race, or civilization. I'd love to find out that there not only is life elsewhere, but that it's someone who is willing and able to interact with us. But such an extraordinary occurrence would require extraordinary evidence.

We're still currently in the first 0.0001% of the "livable" universe's lifespan (we're an estimated 13.8 billion years in and all stars are expected to die after around 100 trillion years or so). We always read stories about "ancient space faring civilizations" but there's actually a very good chance that we'd be one of, if not THE first. It might be a bit arrogant to assume such but there is some logic to it. Life on Earth has been around for roughly 4 billion years, that's rougly 1/3 of the time the universe has been livable. Life also managed to form within the first billion years of the planet's existence. That's bodes well for the prospect of life out among the stars. On the other hand, as far as we know, life has only worked once here on Earth. That seems to give the odds of life forming on any given Earthlike planet 25% odds at best (and let's face it, that's probably REALLY generous odds) of forming, let alone surviving long enough to evolve into a space faring race. There's also the question of would "intelligent" life evolve at all? Our brains require a LOT of energy. At roughly 2% of our body weight, it uses 20% of our oxygen and energy. A chimp's brain, by comparison, only uses about 8% of the body's energy and they get along fine (assuming they don't cross humans). For a wild animal, it often pays off to be bigger and stronger than slightly smarter (just look at jocks vs. nerds, for example). Sure, humans are better off NOW, but for the body to evolve to dedicate so many resources to the brain would likely mean that times must have been pretty good, meaning more physicality was unnecessary (plenty of food and not much danger or competition). It's like trying to build a house. If it's calm weather, you can build something sturdy enough to stand up in a hurricane. If the hurricane is already raging around you, it'd be pretty difficult if not impossible. If life evolved on other planets, what're the odds that they'd be well off enough that bigger brains would be able to evolve? Also, consider this. Dinosaurs ruled the earth for roughly 135 million years. In that time, they had things that could compete with pretty much anything living today in terms of size, speed and strength. The only thing they couldn't compete in was intelligence, yet we went from some rat like thing to what we are today in less than the 66 million years they've been gone. Why didn't they evolve intelligence like us? They didn't need to. Why did we? Opportunity and luck. So, is there life out there? Here's my two cents: Odds of life forming: Good-ish. However, until we find another life form, we will have continuously diminishing odds. Odds of life surviving: Probably not great. The only time we knew it happened happened to be the time it worked. We're the works of Shakespeare in the infinite monkey theorem. Odds of "Intelligent" life evolving: I'd guess relatively fair compared to the odds of life forming and surviving. So, back to your initial question. Is life out there? I'd wager it is. I'd even wager we'll eventually find it. I have my doubts as to coming in contact with another intelligent species, however. I'm going to side with the Fermi paradox on this one. I think "intelligent" life is likely so rare and space is so vast that we'll likely never run into each other... at least, this early into the game.

            • I'm just going to say this: I one-hundred percent, FULLY believe that there's intelligent life somewhere out there. Because it certainly is not here. Not only is that a joke about the fact that people think that YouTube videos called: f*cking 'Frozen Elsa and Spider-man do this shite that is the source of all that is stupid' deserve millions of views. But also the fact that Trump is a candidate for president of the US, Clinton is candidate for president of the US, and this psychopath vegan on YouTube who says he will skin you to make a wallet out of you if you eat meat, and recorded his grandfather's fatal heart attack because he ate meat and actually F*CKING POSTED IT (he removed it because his family begged him) is more than enough evidence for me that we are idiots. Seriously, we are, without a doubt, evolving backwards. Science is doing pretty good. But the human species itself and the current generation that's just a f*cking trainwreck seen as they love this twelve year old who sings the f*cking ALPHABET. Is more than enough for me to state, that our species will probably go extinct, because there will definitely be a president (who is probably a baby right now), who will launch the nukes. Cause total global annihilation. Vlog himself/herself doing it, uploading it and then naming it: "LAUNCHING THE NUKES SOCIAL EXPERIMENT PRANK (GONE WRONG) (GONE TOTAL GLOBAL DESTRUCTION) (GONE LAST FEW MINUTES ON EARTH SEXUAL) (I'M ABOUT TO DIE) (RUSSIA DECLARES WAR?!) SHOCKING REVELATION!!! *subscribe for more nukes* And then put in the description: *like, share, subscribe and comment and i will make a special video bombing Canada!!* Really, f*ck every last one of us.

Yes. Think of how vast the universe is: there are millions of galaxies out there, it is impossible for there to be none of those to have a solar system with a planet in the radius of the sun to create suitable life. To your next question: what would they want from us? Why would they want to conquer us? What do we have that would make us so valuable? We have a planet in that perfect zone; capable of hosting life. That is all they would want from us. But, there is no reason for them to go out of their way and overthrow us just for our tiny planet. It all depends, I would be willing to go further if you can defy "advanced."
