*Warning- Long Post Recently I have been seeing a lot of posts by people requesting the return of SRL, and maybe a permanent sparrow racing activity in the crucible section. I have been looking into each one I find because I found SRL to be fun and different, and thoroughly enjoyed it. And each time I find that someone, not always the same person but someone, has put in a comment 'remove all 300+ light gear first'. My only problem with these people is that they are clearly suffering from a bad case of 'did not think this through', wanting a solution that punishes everyone instead of dealing with the root problem. In this case, the problem was the people who would complete 2 laps and then sit around at the start/finish line waiting for the race to end, and often getting better rewards than the people who played the activity as intended. I fully understand why people are salty about this, I know it irritated me when I saw people doing it, especially when they got better rewards than me after I won the race. However, removing high light rewards is not the answer. Why do we do King's Fall, Challenge of Elders, the nightfall, the vanguard strike playlist, Iron Banner, Trials of Osiris? For the feeling of accomplishment 'yeah, we're making the universe a better place'? Hell no, at least not completely. We do them for the rewards, for that bit of gear that'll bump our light level up another point or that exotic we've been chasing. If SRL returned and they removed all high light level items from the loot table, sure they'd stop people freeloading to high light but they'd also remove all incentive for those of us who did give our all at the races to play the event in the first place. Not to mention, they'd have to do the same to things like Iron Banner, since people go into that and do enough to get points on the board, and then put the controller down and wait for the match to end, and the get a roll from the same loot table as everyone else. In the end, all that removing high light level rewards from the loot table would do is render the activity completely pointless to play. No gain, no play. Rather, what is needed is a way to alter what a player is eligible for from the loot table without necessarily tying it to the position they place... Possible Solution What I would suggest is distance-over-time. Simply put, the game looks at how far you went, and how long it took you to get there. Let's use the Venus track as an example. Anything under 4min 10sec is a seriously quick time. So if an upper bar was set at about 4min 16sec (a time I believe achievable by the vast majority of players), anyone completing the track under that time would get access to the top level drops. Then they would just have further thresholds as times increased until, at probably 4min 46sec (40 seconds after a 'slow' winner), a completion would only net you a strange coin or equally low prize. The real beauty of this system however would be that your prize pool is determined by a combination of distance and time. For example, one race has 6 people all vying for the lead the whole time, and all complete the race in under 4min 16sec except for the person in last, who gets a 4min 18sec time. The first five would all get an item from the top tier prize pool (including items with, say, 330-335 light) while the guy in last would get an item from the next pool down (315-329 light). Next example, a race has some extremely good racer who (somehow) gets a 3min 40sec time. The next two finish with times under 4min 10sec. The next two are beaten by the race end timer, but their placement on the track when the timer ends indicate they would have gotten 4min 15sec and 4min 17sec respectively. And the person in last completed 2 laps then hung around at the finish line. In this case, the first four racers would all get gear in the 330-335 light range. The person in fifth would get 315-329. And the one in last? Stopping at the finish line after completing the second lap means they still have a full lap's worth of track between them and completion at the 4min 10sec end race cutoff, indicating a finishing time of 6min 15sec... they get something from the lowest pool, not a free lunch. And so in conclusion, this system (or something like it) would ensure only the people actually making the attempt to win would be getting worthwhile rewards. Thanks for reading, enjoy your day.
Since my thoughts on the subject are pretty clear, I have selected the results option of the poll, to avoid any possible thoughts of skewed results. And to those who took the time to read the post in full, you have my respect for your tenacity and determination.
As someone who raced over 250+ SRL races, nearly reached Rank 6 on one character and very nearly Rank 5 on my other 2 (no small feats, that took a shit ton of XP and wins for bonus XP) I have some strong opinions and some strong anecdotal (thanks Deej!) evidence behind some of those opinions. First, to address your post, you're basically saying in a more detailed way what I have been proposing for a long time with SRL drops. Just make winning matter. In simple terms, anyone in the top 3 are eligible for top tier drops, anyone from 4-6 are eligible for minimal drops at say a 3rd tier down level thus making it more important to really push for 1-3 yet still be rewarded with something if you fail to hit that. I'm all for that. One thing that needs to stop is exaggeration with "people didn't even race and just sat there and got a 320 helmet!" (not saying that YOU, the OP, are saying this but many people do). Just stop with that. Yes, in the beginning you could do that but they fixed that. I purposefully stopped winning and started to lose a few rounds to test out the RNG as sometimes it seemed 5th place was more well rewarded. A few races I purposefully didn't finish. I did this multiple times on each track, you know what I got? 0, nada, nothing. People acting like you could spam races and just sit there and get great drops are the same exaggerating bullshitters who scream "MIDA is OP, it kilt me so hard I was sent to orbit fap fap!" You couldn't spam races and not try once they adjusted that and no, 320 drops were not as frequent as these exaggerates claim. If you claim they were abundant, please let me know how many races you did so I can gauge the amount of anecdotal (thanks Deej!) proof you have on that mmmmmkay. I am willing to bet that most of the people pissy about SRL are mad that they either didn't like it and/or sucked at it and therefore didn't play it much so they had no chance at drops due to not playing. At the same time, like a child, they were jealous that others were playing it, doing well at it and getting drops. If they would reward winning, instead of everything based soley on RNG, maybe people would STFU about it and stop with the unfounded and hollow, invalid arguments. As for that one special (mittens and velcro shoes special with a note pinned to their shirt that says "do not disturb") poster in particular spamming the "Remove 300+ light drops" I already dealt with him and he as predicted stopped responding once put in a corner. His/her/their? main point to try to make was "You don't even have to finish the race to get anything. So no it doesn't take any skill" to which I enlightened him that "Invalid argument. You don't have to do jack shit in IB either and you get drops. GTFO with that. While I do agree that winning should matter (say top 3 get the drops and they should be top tier drops the higher you place) don't try to turn a blind eye to all the other shit that drops stuff for bad players or players not trying." Of course, some will try to flail in response to my statement as he did with "You don't get rep in ib when you lose. So -blam!- off" But of course in reality - "ZZZZ The fuq does rep matter fap fap? You still get drops don't you? And that is what you were complaining about was DROPS, we're not talking about rep (which BTW, you DO get the medallions that yes, basically give you rep for your losses once you do finally win so again you have presented an invalid argument). Yeah, your double talk, bullshit argument is just that - bullshit. You're eternally trying to spout this shit about SRL but you ignore how EVERYTHING else in this game rewards people who don't win." On a side note, I love how their profile is hidden so you can't check stats or anything lol. No name and shame :) https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/202041474?page=0&sort=0&showBanned=0&path=1 TL;DR So, there in fact is no actual, valid reason not to bring back SRL even if it was in its original form as camping and not playing was not nearly as rewarded as people want to exaggerate about. But in general, the changes you and I mention that make winning matter would be for the best overall.
