Focused light + bounties, jumped from 34 to 40 like thousands of other people. I regret not taking my time with it. Also shout out to being able to immediately unlock the 3rd subclass without even needing to complete the first story mission. Here I was thinking I'd have to grind the campaign to get it, only to find it was the first thing I'd even finish.

Reaching 40 means nothing in this game and you know it. TTK had way more content, you will see in about a week when there is nothing to do in the Division but run around playing touch-butt in park in the dark zone.

That's fine. TTK became moot for me in less than a week. When Halo came out that was my main game, only coming back to Destiny for Iron Bananas these days anyway.

Then later you get gear that has light, but that's a different level system. Hopefully that clears your unrelenting confusion at least for the moment.
