Ok...before I start I'm going to say this: I am aware most of the story is not actually in game. For most people the Grimoire cards are in very poor taste. I had no problem reading them but many of you do and that is understandable .
That being said it is RIDICULOUS to say that Destiny has no story. Quite to the contrary, Destiny has an insane amount of content. It may be fragmented and up to interpretation at times, but overall the lore is very well crafted. It is the part of Destiny I criticize the least (still eyeing you Crucible). The tales of Old Guardians and their accomplishments, the history of each enemy faction excluding the Cabal currently, and even to a lesser extent the weapons.
And then I could end most arguments about lore with two words: TWIGHLIGHT GAP. That Battle alone changed so much. It saw Zavala elected to Vanguard because Shaxx refused and instituted the Crucible. Saladin was forced to step down from the Vanguard but honored through the Iron Banner. The rise of the Thunderlord and birth of the Gjallerhorn. Dredgen Yor slaying Valor. The Reef Wars, which in turn leads to the ENTIRE House of Wolves DLC. Osiris being exiled. I could go on a lot more.
My point is that you shouldn't just criticize a game for lack of story because you don't like to read. Is the story perfect? Heck no. Does it have holes? Yeah, sometimes big ones. I'm just trying to put out that the lore is one of the better parts of the game, if not THE best part....ok, that last bit was opinion, but oh well.
BTW, if there are any story holes or gaps you wish to address, feel free to let me know. I do enjoy discussing the Destiny universe.
Edit: Wow...already so close to the trending Category...Thanks guys. I enjoy hearing what you have to say, either agree or disagree..and yes, to a lesser extent the haters too.
Edit 2: Shadow Artiste and metdevil brought up excellent points about the difference between lore and story. However if you take the definition of each, both apply to the grimoire. This result in an awkward case where the grimoire is both lore and story
Edit 3: Trending now. Thanks everyone. I'm finishing up my classes for the night and will respond to you guys ASAP.

1 RespuestaDestiny has a beautiful story. The problem is that it's all lost in the Grimoire online and no ones bothers to read that. If Destiny could have that grimoire merge with the story and have a grimoire kiosk thatd be great.
-
Yep, Destiny has plenty of story and lore.
-
1 RespuestaI hope destiny 2 will be a prequel called Destiny: Battle of Twilight Gap
-
Well said my friend, well said
-
Well, im glad they have a story, but they should put the story in the game. I recently started played dishonored and you find stories and clues and you read them in- game. Why is that so hard for bungie to do?
-
It would help if there were page long Grimoire Summary Cards. Having to read each individual Card for a little lore is fine, if there weren't so many Grimoire cards to begin with. The Summaries won't make the others obsolete either. The page long ones will be more brief and if you want the deeper meanings/definitions/etc then you read the actual Grimoire.

41 RespuestasHating on destiny's story is like hating on a tv show plot line after only watching the pilot. Of course it's not complete. It's not meant to be. There's a whole damn season to fill.

Editado por Benstopher: 2/17/2016 1:49:24 AMIn game story is lackluster, lore is intense though. Join the collective of knowledge and the ashen conflux for all the lore

I would read them to pass the time on long flights/train rides. Good stuff, but unacceptable delivery, even given all the drama going on at the studio. If anything should have been drip fed to the community it should have been this via PVE story events (even PVP - Thorn, TLW, Juju). That would have been the best way to inject what story elements got left behind due to deadlines and lost employees.

I have read the entire Grimoire. I have no problem with reading as I enjoy books greatly. Still doesn't excuse Bungie's obvious mistake of not including it in the game for reading when going through obnoxious load screens. Maybe if they actually played Dark Souls instead of point to it to attract hardcore players, they would have learned that Dark Souls' story/lore was ALL in the game. Just because some people didn't know the story/lore until some youtubers picked it apart doesn't mean it didn't have it in the game. In any case, I enjoy when Bungie actually puts time and effort into writing story/lore because it is almost always awesome. The points you bring up about the Twilight Gap while interesting, do very little to move the story along. We need some real reasons to fight against the Darkness as our survival as a species never applies.

Destiny doesn't have a story. The grimoire cards have a story. There needs to be a way to read them in game, and hopefully destiny 2 provides that.
-
A story may be extraordinary and worthy to be told or written. If said story is narrated by your drunk pet octopus, in his own language, and on top of that, he is confused himself and mixes all the parts, the story is crap. Stories are only worth something if you can understand them. If you can't find the words, just tell it with music which was the best narrative in this game.
Grimoire are a nice addition, should be a support for the story, not the story.
5 RespuestasI particularly love the book of sorrows (even though I don't have all the entries yet)

The sad part is all that grimoire story was supposed to be in the game.

My favorite is the King Fall raids.

Coleman or Eureka?
-
The writing style of some of the cards is quite engaging
-
I get it, the story in the grimoire is absolutely amazing but can we quit saying the game actually has a good story? Because it doesn't. The lore is great but the game's story is pitiful.
-
Story not being viewable or playable in the game = No story in the game

Who cares

-The traveler almost ditching and making humanity into fallen v2.0 -Rasputin almost blowing traveler out of the sky when it was going to skip out -black garden inside traveler -traveler known as gardener -Rasputin calling guardians corpses bc it doesn't understand how light works -Rasputin created exos -Rasputin created exo stranger but can't stand not knowing how she "steps" -traveler using the life force of dead humanity in the collapse combined with rasputins Arsenal to save the last bit of humanity -black heart the traveler's heart -alternatively black heart the vex's way of becoming powerful via sword-logic worship -sword logic Destiny has no story but tons of lore.

3 RespuestasEditado por Strafio: 2/16/2016 11:48:17 PMHey dude - I agree there's some neat stuff in the grimoire but: a) It doesn't make up for the complete lack of story telling within the game. b) The grimoire itself has some tasty nuggets but is by and large vague and incomplete (as said before can only supplement a proper story, not replace it) c) Since Bungie ditched the original story and got rid of the lead writer, it seems to have fallen into a "make it up as you go along" mode with story writing, leaving me concerned that they don't even have a coherent story beneath it all. The lore is awesome and the potential for an awesome story is there but following the butchering of the original story and the loose patchwork of ideas that were put in place to replace it needs a lot of work to be melded into an actual story. Don't get me wrong, I agree there's a lot of cool stuff in there, but it's a long way from being what could be considered to be any kind of coherent story!

if only it was not limited to a base ball card i have to go hunting for like a child during Easter morning
-
I love the lore and how much it provides (albeit vague) but like most of the other complaints, it sucks it's not actually in the game and only through the app.
-
You know what would make all this cool stuff more intense? If any of it actually happened in the game.
