Ok...before I start I'm going to say this: I am aware most of the story is not actually in game. For most people the Grimoire cards are in very poor taste. I had no problem reading them but many of you do and that is understandable .
That being said it is RIDICULOUS to say that Destiny has no story. Quite to the contrary, Destiny has an insane amount of content. It may be fragmented and up to interpretation at times, but overall the lore is very well crafted. It is the part of Destiny I criticize the least (still eyeing you Crucible). The tales of Old Guardians and their accomplishments, the history of each enemy faction excluding the Cabal currently, and even to a lesser extent the weapons.
And then I could end most arguments about lore with two words: TWIGHLIGHT GAP. That Battle alone changed so much. It saw Zavala elected to Vanguard because Shaxx refused and instituted the Crucible. Saladin was forced to step down from the Vanguard but honored through the Iron Banner. The rise of the Thunderlord and birth of the Gjallerhorn. Dredgen Yor slaying Valor. The Reef Wars, which in turn leads to the ENTIRE House of Wolves DLC. Osiris being exiled. I could go on a lot more.
My point is that you shouldn't just criticize a game for lack of story because you don't like to read. Is the story perfect? Heck no. Does it have holes? Yeah, sometimes big ones. I'm just trying to put out that the lore is one of the better parts of the game, if not THE best part....ok, that last bit was opinion, but oh well.
BTW, if there are any story holes or gaps you wish to address, feel free to let me know. I do enjoy discussing the Destiny universe.
Edit: Wow...already so close to the trending Category...Thanks guys. I enjoy hearing what you have to say, either agree or disagree..and yes, to a lesser extent the haters too.
Edit 2: Shadow Artiste and metdevil brought up excellent points about the difference between lore and story. However if you take the definition of each, both apply to the grimoire. This result in an awkward case where the grimoire is both lore and story
Edit 3: Trending now. Thanks everyone. I'm finishing up my classes for the night and will respond to you guys ASAP.

One of my favorite parts of Destiny is interpreting the lore and building context for what we're currently doing in-game. For example, I posted a thread that discusses the conflict between Rasputin and the Traveler.

7 RespuestasBackground story could be the most beautiful thing ever written by man, but if there isn't enough of a main story to be driven by the background, then there's no point. The main story should make you ask positive questions of interes like "what shaped a character into who they are" or "what events led up to those referenced in the main story and what effect did they have in shaping the time of the story" because it would already answered "why should I care" about those characters, location, or events. Destiny is the opposite. You see a character or location and just say okay, that's a thing. Then you have to look up why it's supposedly significant to the story, which most of the time isn't even hinted at in the main story itself. If it wasn't important enough to reference or hint at in the main story, then it must not be of importance, so why should I bother looking it up?

1 RespuestaFinally someone who gets me. I REALLY wanna see like a flashback from Shaxx from when he was in the battle of Twilight Gap.

Editado por Mar: 2/17/2016 7:04:59 AMshhhh!!! if they hear you talking about liking something related to or in destiny they'll descend on the post like vultures to rotting road kill... but seriously, its great, i do agree (slightly) with the complaint that it is not in game and is "difficult" to find, granted most that complain about that take it to extremes and are just looking for excuses to whine about something. i do think it should be in the game somewhere, maybe a kiosk like some have said, or maybe menu tap of them, but it should be in game. i still say the best part of the lore is probably the book of sorrow, at least as far as the stuff added in year 2. year one grimoire stuff would be a toss up between the ahamkara cards, or the ghost fragment: dead orbit one... sadly i don't think hardly anyone actually reads them, so most don't know. same as in dark souls, people always complain "theres no story!" or "there is nothing to give a reason for things to be happening!" but you have to actually READ the items in the game to figure them out.

7 RespuestasIf you have to leave the game to know about the game you're playing, that aspect of the game has failed. Simple. Dont't sugarcoat it, cuz you'll probably eat that too.
-
2 RespuestasI'd love to see a Twilight Gap prequel. It obviously wouldn't be an mmorpg like Destiny, but more of a Halo-style mission gameplay. Destiny 2 should come out first, but someday a prequel spin off would be epic
-
The game has none. If it's not in the game then it's not in the game
-
8 RespuestasToo bad literally none of it is in the game so it's worthless info I'm not and never will be enough of a skinny jeans fanboy to go to a website to read glorified pokemon cards about a videogame. If the designers didn't care enough about it to put it "in-game" it will never be read by me.

Editado por BOSS_TPH76: 2/17/2016 2:54:52 AMDestiny has no story. Destiny has grimmoire cards. If it is not in the game and has no effect on player experience than it is useless. You might as well read fan fiction. It is the most insane choice anybody can make to say: "he look...who needs to live the story through the media they are using? Lets take it all out an put it in a collectible card game." I am not going to read that. Not because I don't want to or because I wouldn't think it is good...but because when I do read it I will probably spend every five minutes thinking "WHY THE -blam!- DIDN"T THEY PUT IT IN THE -blam!-ING GAME...and reinforcing my growing feelings that Bungie -blam!-ed up.
-
2 RespuestasOK, first I love reading. I used to skip lunch to read in the library. I've read every grimoire I've unlocked and some I haven't. That said, Destiny THE GAME doesn't have a good story. And it's entirely BECAUSE they didn't put it ingame. They should have put as much effort making the interactive experience as good as the written lore. Especially considering how many people probably have no idea the grimoire even exists.
-
Grimmoire cards are the WORST way you could possible deliver a story. They could put up the flavor text of the cards up during load screens in orbit, or have a kiosk to read. Having them OUTSIDE the game is absolutely a pain in the ass. How would it feel to read a book, get to the end and have to go load a webpage to finish the story? Or be watching a movie and it fades to black telling you to go log on to a site to go finish the movie on a stream. Placing the story anywhere than IN the game was such a poor choice.
-
1 RespuestaYou are clearly unaware of the difference between plot/story and lore.
-
I don't care how good it may be, if it ain't in the game it ain't worth shit!
-
Sure, it's intense. But it's locked behind stupid -blam!-ing grimoire because the developers were too incompetent to find a way to Piece it into the game.
-
Editado por Noctroglyph: 2/17/2016 4:27:11 AMI criticize Bungie for making all that content inaccessible in game. All they needed to do was add "history archive" terminals in the social spaces...just like they did in Marathon. Hell, there's even a place on Venus called The Archive.
-
I just wish there was more information on each enemy type to be honest
-
4 RespuestasI still don't know why would you put the lore outside the game
-
Too bad none of it is in the game and it's all pointless.
-
U know the momennt where u traveling to a strike and u hear zavala cayde or somebody else speak, well that was suppost to be a one minute scene/clip on the original game and u would get a end scene/clip too. The lore was in the game. Then the darkness took over.
-
3 Respuestasto put it succinctly, you are wrong. But I will elaborate. imagine you go to a movie and when it starts, not only are NONE of the scenes from the preview in the movie, but the scenes that ARE in the movie are short, disjointed, and don't make any sense in context to each other. But, hey, for every 10 minutes you sit there they'll hand you a pamphlet with some of the movies story in it you can read. That would be a shitty movie. Let's compare apples to apples though. Halo, a game made by the same company had a rich, vibrant story which was played out IN THE GAME and could be fully understood and enjoyed just by playing the game. The story was ENHANCED and deepened by other mediums such as books (not stupid cards that you had to unlock through the game containing fragmented paragraphs that make hardly any sense). Destiny makes no sense whatsoever. You wake up confused and disoriented in a car graveyard and it never really gets much better. I still have no idea who the stranger is supposed to be or why I am supposed to care. so, yeah, the story sucks because the story of the game does not exist. The simple truth is, the Grimiore is a horrible idea that only exists because Bungie Blamed the Blam out of their Blam and lost their Blaming writers so they had to come up with some half-blammed blam that they knew they wouldn't be able to put into the game, hence, the game play is fun, but don't expect a story. this game has no story, read the book instead.

4 RespuestasYou have some great points but that said let me say this most of what we find in the Grimoire is just fragments. Even the most resent battle outside the City walls is dripping in legend. Real facts are rare and hard to come by as we are just starting to piece together our past in this world. you have to think back to the Archaeologists of the late 19th and early 20th century they were trying to put facts on the past but only had legend and story's to go with the actual physical pieces they had. That is were we are in the story of this world we call Destiny. We have physical weapons and gear but they are shadowed in legend and lore. we are now at that point in our story were we can actually look into those legends and separate the facts from the fantastic. The Battle of Twilight Gap was the end of the Dark Age after the Collapse. We are now at the start of a New Renaissance, we will find that many things we held as truths was fiction and what we thought was fiction to hold a Truth. This will be a fun time for us Guardians as weather we know it of not we are not only Guardians but also Combat Archaeologists also, putting together the past to look to our future.

Editado por TangentialCoot8: 2/17/2016 3:04:40 PMThat's what happens when you show a guy like Joe Staten the door. He and his team created a rich textured universe and lore surrounding the vanguard. I saw developer's conference 2012 or 2013 where he spoke about the character development in Destiny. It was amazing. All that changed when he left 1 year out from launch. That specific game and lore died forever. Oh what could have been. On the positive side I hear he's officially working as Lead writer on ReCore. Can't wait to enjoy his work again!

It does :3

4 RespuestasTOO BAD ITS NOT IN THE FÜCKING GAME!

1 RespuestaI don't have a clue about the lore because I can't be bothered piecing everything together from 'Top Trumps' cards. If it was in the game I would be interested but I think it's a poor way to tell the story.
