Destiny Lore is Actually Intense

Ok...before I start I'm going to say this: I am aware most of the story is not actually in game. For most people the Grimoire cards are in very poor taste. I had no problem reading them but many of you do and that is understandable . That being said it is RIDICULOUS to say that Destiny has no story. Quite to the contrary, Destiny has an insane amount of content. It may be fragmented and up to interpretation at times, but overall the lore is very well crafted. It is the part of Destiny I criticize the least (still eyeing you Crucible). The tales of Old Guardians and their accomplishments, the history of each enemy faction excluding the Cabal currently, and even to a lesser extent the weapons. And then I could end most arguments about lore with two words: TWIGHLIGHT GAP. That Battle alone changed so much. It saw Zavala elected to Vanguard because Shaxx refused and instituted the Crucible. Saladin was forced to step down from the Vanguard but honored through the Iron Banner. The rise of the Thunderlord and birth of the Gjallerhorn. Dredgen Yor slaying Valor. The Reef Wars, which in turn leads to the ENTIRE House of Wolves DLC. Osiris being exiled. I could go on a lot more. My point is that you shouldn't just criticize a game for lack of story because you don't like to read. Is the story perfect? Heck no. Does it have holes? Yeah, sometimes big ones. I'm just trying to put out that the lore is one of the better parts of the game, if not THE best part....ok, that last bit was opinion, but oh well. BTW, if there are any story holes or gaps you wish to address, feel free to let me know. I do enjoy discussing the Destiny universe. Edit: Wow...already so close to the trending Category...Thanks guys. I enjoy hearing what you have to say, either agree or disagree..and yes, to a lesser extent the haters too. Edit 2: Shadow Artiste and metdevil brought up excellent points about the difference between lore and story. However if you take the definition of each, both apply to the grimoire. This result in an awkward case where the grimoire is both lore and story Edit 3: Trending now. Thanks everyone. I'm finishing up my classes for the night and will respond to you guys ASAP.

  • All that lore would probably be even better, if they decided to put it in game! Or at the very least some kind of codex like any other game

  • Yup, this is exactly true. People who say Destiny(as in the entire universe of 'Destiny', not just the part that's on the disc) has no story are ignorants. It does and it's damn good. One of the most interesting lores I've seen and definitely gives stuff like raids so much more character. I actually feel bad for people who are too stubborn to read the cards since they miss out on so much. Everyone kills Oryx on King's Fall but not many know the truly intriquing story behind him and where he cane from. Oryx's story is the best example of the theme of Destiny's lore going way beyond the game itself.

    • Lore is top notch. There are some Grimoire cards I'd stack up against sci fi IP in terms of potential. The story telling, obviously, is lacking. But there's plenty of time to remedy that. What we have is an exceptionally solid foundation to work from.

      • Yes, I'll agree the lore is excellent, especially the book of sorrows, but it's still supposed to be a video game and I feel they succeeded with the lore and game as separate entities , they failed to coherently connect them together so far. My biggest hope is for all the holes in the story to be on purpose, kind of like how the Speaker is trying to keep us as blind errand boys, keeping us from our real purpose until the right time. But my worst fears are for this to be all there is, lazily composed content with great lore , and stupid micro content to fill in the middle.

      • I actually love that Destiny is light on story, but with a really rich lore - it's the best balance for RPGs imo. I just download the collected grimoire from around the web and read it at better reading times (on the bus, in bed, etc.) The way it is it doesn't break up the game, but sure enhances playing it.

        • I personally love the Grimoire Cards and am really bummed to not see them in-game. Here's my solution: a new addition to Destiny called the Library/Archives (still unsure on the name.) So you know all of those bookshelves next to the Speaker? If you walk up to those, you will see an option saying "access Library" and you will simply be able to read the Grimoire cards in-game. While it doesn't actually incorporate the lore into the story, at least it doesn't make you go to a separate website to read the lore.

          • Yes, yes it is. Especially when, after combing the Grimore for months, you see certain cards matching up and, together, revealing things you never realized and you become euphoric as crap and you rush to write a lore post on your newfound discovery.

The least Bungie could do is implement a kiosk in the Tower so one could check their/read Grimoire like a personalized computer or archives of some sort for Guardians. It would make sense to place this kiosk in the Vanguard section of the Tower providing us with intel about our enemies and our current statistics. It would slightly increase the immersion factor rather than having to go onto the internet. The current mentality with the Grimoire is that if it's not in the game, it doesn't exist or ever happened in the world of Destiny!!!

          • "I drive myself to the edge of madness trying to explain the truth. It's so simple. Elegant like a knife point. It explains - this is not hyperbole, this is the farthest thing from exaggeration - EVERYTHING. But you lay it out and they stare at you like you've just been exhaling dust. Maybe they're missing some underlying scaffold of truth. Maybe they are all propped on a bed of lies that must be burned away. Why does anything exist? No no no no no don't reach for that word. There's no 'reason'. That's teleology and teleology will stitch your eyelids shut. Why do we have atoms? Because atomic matter is more stable than the primordial broth. Atoms defeated the broth. That was the first war. There were two ways to be and one of them won. And everything that came next was made of atoms. Atoms made stars. Stars made galaxies. Worlds simmered down to rock and acid and in those smoking primal seas the first living molecule learned to copy itself. All of this happened by the one law, the blind law, which exists without mind or meaning. It's the simplest law but it has no worshippers here (out there, though, out there - !) HOW DO I EXPLAIN IT it's so simple WHY DON'T YOU SEE Imagine three great nations under three great queens. The first queen writes a great book of law and her rule is just. The second queen builds a high tower and her people climb it to see the stars. The third queen raises an army and conquers everything. The future belongs to one of these queens. Her rule is harshest and her people are unhappy. But she rules. -Toland This explains everything, understand? This is why the universe is the way it is, and not some other way. Existence is a game that everything plays, and some strategies are winners: the ability to exist, to shape existence, to remake it so that your descendants - molecules or stars or people or ideas - will flourish, and others will find no ground to grow. And as the universe ticks on towards the close, the great players will face each other. In the next round there will be three queens and all of them will have armies, and now it will be a battle of swords - until one discovers the cannon, or the plague, or the killing word. Everything is becoming more ruthless and in the end only the most ruthless will remain (LOOK UP AT THE SKY) and they will hunt the territories of the night and extinguish the first glint of competition before it can even understand what it faces or why it has transgressed. This is the shape of victory: to rule the universe so absolutely that nothing will ever exist except by your consent. This is the queen at the end of time, whose sovereignty is eternal because no other sovereign can defeat it. And there is no reason for it, no more than there was reason for the victory of the atom. It is simply the winning play. Of course, it might be that there was another country, with other queens, and in this country they sat down together and made one law and one tower and one army to guard their borders. This is the dream of small minds: a gentle place ringed in spears. But I do not think those spears will hold against the queen of the country of armies. And that is all that will matter in the end."

              • It's not that I don't like to read, or don't want to, it's the fact that I play video games for the story in the game, not the story I'm supposed to be reading. I heard the lore is amazing, I just wish it was more interpreted into the game. Not all of it, just enough to make the story in the game make sense.

At this point in time, with the quest reorganization, I'd say the solo story can stand tall on its own, but still, it pales in comparison to the lore. It's just so good. So many little mysteries and theories that have come and gone. What's your favorite part?

The lore is great, its implementation is poor (Skyrim story-style poor), but it has great potential.
