Three of Coins
OK. There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding of exactly how Three of Coins works. I was one of them, but after much research, this is what I found out...
Three of Coins DO NOT STACK. If you fail to get a drop after using a ToC, the next coin you use has a greater chance of dropping an exotic engram. So forth and so forth. Eventually, you'll get a drop (if you've purchased enough ToC).
A Three of Coins (once used) will stay active UNTIL you kill an ultra. You MUST use another coin after EACH ultra kill.
What is an ULTRA you ask?
An ultra is typically an end boss like Sepiks Prime, Phogoth, Draksis, Valus Ta'aurc, etc.. These bosses will consistently drop consumables such as Black Wax Idols, Blue Polyphages, Axiomatic Beads, House Banners, etc..
All other (yellow health bar) enemies are MAJORS. They may drop consumables, but not consistently and (typically) are not the mission's objective, but more of an obstacle.

What really is frustrating is Bungie wasn't clear about the "stacking" term on the coin definition leading to this confusion. Here is how to clear everything up. Pop a coin Message on character screen "One (1) Three of Coins is active - Increased chance of exotic reward on next Ultra kill." Kill Ultra and engram drops - Message disappears Kill Ultra and no engram drops - Message reads "Three of coins is now inactive. To reactivate and increase chance for exotic engram reward use 1 coin prior to next Ultra Kill" Pop a coin Message on character screen "Two (2) Three of coins are active - Increased chance of exotic reward on next Ultra kill." This would continue on character screen until an exotic engram drops. This way people can see what the coin count has risen to if multiple coins were used and multiple Ultras were killed without an engram. This would also clear up the "stacking" question as someone could use multiple coins on the first Ultra and see that the coin count did not go up when the buff is active. Just thoughts

Another way to state this, to make it easier for people, is that an Ultra has the skull next to their name instead of a level indicator.

When you get an exotic from the three of coins you have a cool down before the next one (seems like 30-45 minutes to me). When you load up the game for the first time of the day, use 3 of the three of coins in the end of the black garden (3 ultras). Start your day with gold, then continue your path. I have a video about this on YouTube look up NOIZYDANGLYS NOIZY NATION. In the clip I get gold on the second ultra, it's usually the third for me. Happy hunting :)

4 RespuestasDoes anyone know, or have an opinion, on the following: 1) if you're using 3 of Coins on a strike, or with a fire team, would you (as opposed to another team member) have to land the killing shot on the Ultra for it to have effect? 2) For the purpose of using 3 of Coins, are the Fallen Walkers, Cabal tanks, etc that you have to defeat halfway through some of the strikes considered to be Ultras?

2 RespuestasSo after the kids are in bed tonight, I'm going to buy a bunch of those three of coins, and go hit the trail. Find an easy boss, pop a three of coin, kill him, no drop, jump out and try the same thing over again until exotic. Sounds good! I saw in one of the You Tube videos you quit before timer is out, the mission will bring you back to the boss, or at least make it easier to get to the boss?

2 RespuestasI brought 50 and stacked 4 at a go at the eye of a gatelord up to 20 coins and got nothing. I then used another 15 coins one at a time to get the same chest piece that i had gotten 3 times before. Dont stack them ontop of each other. The previous day when i was usin 1 at a time i would have to use 7 to 15 coins to get one drop. Twice i got 2 drop together. It seams to drop the same gear again and again. Now what am i going to do with my 80 shards after breaking down my stuff from my vault and these repeated drops

I have used the "three of coins" only to find it does not show on my character screen. I have attempted 15 times and still nothing. I understand when to use them but I am completely confused as the why they are not showing up. I watched my son use one and saw the "buff" show up on his character screen. I don't know if this may help with understanding my issue but I also have trials buffs that seem to be a permanent fixture on my character screen. Frustrated!

3 RespuestasJust use em during the kings fall raid. At least then you can fool yourself into thinking that it actually works, or maybe its where it works the best. BTW do you use it before, during, or after killing the ultra?

Thanks for this. I was planning on fing myself again this week by trying to stackem. Which really pissed me off last week cuz i only got 4 exotic engrams out of the 35 three of coins i had.

1 RespuestaAre any of the "Named" Yellow life bar enemies also considered "Ultras"? I.e. summoned champions or other uniques you might run in to in the open or partially through strikes/missions. Etc.. Etc.. That are not necessarily the end bosses

Shitty on Bungie's part. I'd you only needed one at a time they needed to limit it to one active at a time like the materials for glimmer so you can't stack them. Now that we figured it out they will butcher the system from the abusers.

2 RespuestasDo you have to be a certain light level to use Three of Coins? I'm hovering at 235 currently, and have used 7 coins going into strikes. Am I a) having bad luck, b) consuming them too early, c) not the correct light level, d) something I haven't thought of? Any help?
