Has anyone actually tested the "crouch and look straight down at the floor" thing when a Gorgon gets danger close? It always seems to work for me, but then someone else in the fireteam usually ends up double-jumping or something and then we all die anyway.

Something like that. In Greek mythology, the Gorgons were monsters that would turn anyone meeting their gaze into stone. So you either don't look directly at them, or look at them indirectly, like using a mirror too see their reflection.

Yea. The more I think about it the aegis is made of gorgon and Gorgons don't trigger each other

That would make sense because in mythology if you looked at a gorgon you'd become stone.
