Maybe the reason why old weapons won't be ascend-able is because weapon damage will be tied to armor? Eliminating the need for Attack stat?

4 RespuestasNah, in the GameInformer stuff it sounds like they're using Attack. The reason this is happening is most likely because some weapons like Fatebringer were made overpowered for their intended place in player progression, and Bungie seems to be leaning towards some more standard RPG mechanics with Taken King. How many RPGs with progressing gear let you use the same weapon the whole damn way, let alone for 10 years?
