EDIT: Still people responding even though this post has been dead for awhile... I guess people really want their voices heard bungie!
EDIT: Can we get this highest rated so all the devs can see?
EDIT: Bungie!!! Please read this and the replies! Remember. This is what the players want.
EDIT: This is now a petition to let us upgrade old gear! "Sign" below. But please read and discuss as well!
So... Many are speculating about what the deal is when it comes to ascending old weapons and gear to higher levels when The Taken King arrives. Many people say that they should be able to ascend their old gear to these newer levels, while others think it would be better just to move on to new gear. DeeJ puts it like this: "A ten year relationship with the same weapon seems boring in our opinion." (Not his exact words).
This indicates that Bungie is very well considering making our old weapons obsolete compared to TTK weapons/gear. I understand were DeeJ is coming from. I really do. But I have to disagree.
We all know that the weapons and gear from the new expansions adds something new and cool to the table. This is why Guardians swap out one of their old weapons for something else (Because using the same stuff over and over gets boring, like DeeJ said). But there is always something that you really enjoy using, and keeping by your side. Of course, you'll swap it out for something else depending on what the situation demands, but otherwise it is your favorite. Making those old favorite weapons obsolete... Just kind of sucks.
When TTK comes out, all the gear and weapons from previous expansions and vanilla destiny will completely die out.
Alright, now I'm getting into a touchy subject... "Day 1 Players". I believe that no matter when you buy the game, you should always be able to experience the game equally. But... I also think that day one players should be able to keep their old items. It just seems mean to take all those weapons viability away. I want newer players to look at a veterans old vanilla or TDB gear and say "Woah! What's that cool gear?" Their should always be a variety of gear and weapons for players to choose from. DeeJ is worried people won't continue to play Destiny if they only use the same weapons over and over... Listen up DeeJ. You won't have to worry about that if you guys add new and exciting options for players to choose from. The players will use the new stuff... But they also want to be able to show off their old stuff, and say " Yeah, this is what our gear was like before all the different expansions.
IN CONCLUSION:
-I believe you should be able to ascend year 1 items to keep up with year 2 items
-I believe as long as their is a wide variety of gear and weapons to choose from, and new challenges in missions and raids, people will continue to play destiny for a long time even if players keep some of their really old stuff (If our old stuff was "boring" we would dismantle it)
-And please, for the love of God, let my Venation III still be viable in TTK. It is so sick...
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies! We are trending!
EDIT: Found an awesome reply with a little more on the issue made by Aprovoked Mango
Taking HoW as the example, we got lots of new weapons via trials, poe, queen etc, now some of them I have loved and they have become my new go to's whilst some ive disliked and stick to my old favs like supremacy. Now deej can call it boring keeping the same weapons but on the flipside how cool is it in say destiny 3 where someone sees you with the supremacy, a gun you have carried through everything since week 2. ttk looks to destroy our "legend" and take us to vanilla 2.0, they shouldnt introduce a system allowing us to use whatever the hell we like to then bottleneck us back into such a tiny selection. Thats one massive step backwards!
sure mmos reset but they bring with them a freaking ton of content, ttk would need to replace vanilla + 2 dlcs to warrant that idea. Thats doubtfully not going to happen so destiny should stick with what its set out. Let us carve out story with the gear and weapons we use, the new stuff will be adopted, some of the old will filter out but one things for sure it makes eveything alot more interesting.
if they want to end the reign of some weapons maybe introduce an ascension material that is limited in number say 2 per char and thats it, no more ever or until year 3. for example (normal/hard raid) that way you are extremely picky about what you take with you and what you leave behind.
tl:dr: if ttk is vanilla 2.0 then bungie took a huge stepbackwards. Let us carry on carving out own story with our choice of weapons and gear, new stuff will be adopted, some old stuff eventually wiped out but dont bottleneck us back into such a tiny selection like the base game had where we all used and looked the same.
EDIT: Another awesome comment! First part is HILARIOUS! It has some good points. This was made by Cloney:

"Hey you grinded out VoG to get all that Armour and all those Weapons in the beginning? You're attached to them and love them?"
"Yeah I do"
"Well that is boring as shit, so you can't use that shit anymore"
I honestly do not understand Bungie's philosophy when it comes to gear....especially when the new gear they release is getting consistently more boring than the gear from the Vanilla game.
Im going through VoG still trying to get the Armour (because I came late to the Raiding Party) because I love that shit over the PoE stuff, over the Crota stuff and all the other Endgame stuff that is out there.
They seem to have this philosophy of forcing players into a smaller and smaller selection of gear they higher level they are....its utterly ridiculous, I mean some of the Exotics are Exotic because they have a long history with Previous Owners who used them for a long time...
Thorn, The Last Word, Bad Juju....all used by people within the Destiny lore and became famous sort after guns, isn't the entire point of Destiny forging your own legend?
What if my Guardian wants to be known as the badass Titan who took down Crota, Atheon and all the other bosses in between in her Kabr Armour, wielding the Word of Crota, Black Hammer and Gjallarhon?
It just boggles the mind that they ask us to play through all this content so much, being bitchslapped by the RNGesus at every step, and when we finally get what we want....
....they tell us "Sorry, using that is boring, use this crappy new gun instead because it will do more damage."
I say earn the Ascension. Have a bounty every week, that can only be done once per week, that allows you to ascend a single weapon or armor piece.
-
This is a really good post. I agree with everything. They act like doubling our vault space was a huge deal. Don't get me wrong, it's better than nothing......but it should be more. I probably could have those 36 new slots filled in less than 2 months just with new stuff. Why can we not keep our old gear? Every other RPG or loot game would at least offer a higher/better version of the same old gear. Let's not forget the prayers to RNG to get what we have. Bungie giving us practically an ultimatum for this shows they haven't really played their own game like some of us have.
-
4 RespuestasBungie... listen carefully... Year 2 Ascension is a must, otherwise what is the point of year one. Vault of Glass becomes irrelavent, as does Crota and Prison of Elders. I am one who helps people complete their VoG for the first time so I have racked in quite the VoG collection yet I feel disheartened the fact that I played all of those games just to go back to square one. We wanted more vault space, we got more vault space. We want heavy fusion rifles, we're going to get heavy fusion rifles (also wanted a heavy sniper rifle but never mind), we want to use our old stuff, GIVE US YEAR TWO ASCENSION. I WANT TO KILL STUFF WITH MY EPITAPH 2261. NOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

If they let everyone ascend every weapon over the course of 10 years how big do you thing the vault space would have to be? Stop whining and use the new guns. It's not hard.
-
The thing is, it's very easy to get people to switch to other guns. By simply making them look cooler they've switched a huge portion of their player base. Add on new perks and maybe better stats and its GG for old weaponry (not everyone is like this but I sure am) and by the looks of it that's exactly what they're doing. The thing is, people want to keep their old weapons and armor for bragging rights. That's what this game was supposed to be about. Not just because they're effective but because they have a story behind them. Let's say they don't let gear from year 1 ascend, they just wiped out all reason to do trials, VOG, Crotas end, and PoE. The bullshit logic that "these weapons will still be useful in the crucible/patrol" is a lazy excuse. That's not end-game content and most importantly, it's not new! Not letting people ascend has already been decided and Bungie couldn't give a shit about any good times we have. They just want more play time and the only way to do that is to involve grind.
-
I don't really care.. I want new things.. Im getting really bored of my weapons and armor right now.
-
What if I told you that when TTK comes out you can go to any weapons vendor and BUY a weapon more powerful than Fatebringer and it would only cost you 150 marks. Does grinding VoG for weaker, RNG based gear sound like something you might be interested in? I'm guessing new players will steer clear of this content. Why would they ever play it?
-
1 RespuestaSigned. We invest a lot of time into gaining these weapons and armors because we want them, and we like to use them. We don't all grind to get the mathematically superior gear; we grind to get the gear we want. Making the gear from year 1 irrelevant just makes us feel like we wasted our time, when we could of just waited to buy the game later to the same effect.
-
I don't particularly mind, honestly. The way I like to think of it is that it's almost like we've got seasons; the story and universe itself progresses, but there's always a starting line and pretty much everyone ends up starting at the same point and then working upwards to be at the top again. I don't think it'd be fun if 9 years from now we've got everyone with Fatebringers still outperforming the guys who now can't get it any more (by the end of the franchise I'd be surprised if they keep the original game up) simply for being there early on. That kind of insurmountable gap goes beyond "cool perks for being a vet." Rather than that, I actually really like the way they're handling it with special identifiers like emblems, shaders, etc. for year one players. While keeping us within the same unified playerbase on the same ground as everyone else who joins us in the next few years(there'll be a lot, there's no denying it if Destiny continues to get better over its lifespan), it's a way to say, "I've got experience and I probably know what I'm talking about." This is just my feelings as someone used to throwing away every weapon he's got for something better in any MMO or even normal RPG's. Is the only thing that a year's worth of effort and playtime got you some overpowered gun? No. You got experience. You got knowledge, good memories, and probably a healthy interest in the world if you've stuck around in it this long. Some of us even got an exercise in patience or firsthand exposure to how people can be asshats. I remember when I would go into a mission alone and by the end I had a full Fireteam because I ran into others doing it and all it took was some invites getting sent, and banding together that way was how I got through the game for the first time. This game's made and completely broken a few good friendships for me, and my friends list has quadrupled in size since I picked it up. I wasted I don't know how many hours trying desperately to get the armor pieces I needed back in the VoG days. Looking back over the past year, I don't think there's a single thing I've said, done or heard that I really wish hadn't happened. That's a pretty hard thing for a game to give, especially one that got such bad press on release. So yeah, I'll clear out my vault a bit and take the goodbye with open arms. I'll have fun messing around, I'll learn the new raid, and I'll explore the shit out of every corner the Dreadnaught's got. I know the game and going forward I can be more efficient than the newer players, I can get to know about how everything in the game links together and I can hopefully give them reasons to enjoy the game the way I have. That's what my first year of Destiny has led up to and that's what that stupid-ass black tiger stripe pattern means to me.

the only thing I can say to this and Deej is this, LOOT we WANT LOTS OF LOOT! simple no? look getting rid of the old guns is not I repeat NOT HOW YOU MAKE A GAME LAST, after reading this I'm really debating on even touching ttk. I know there are alot of people saying f this f that get good scrub and so on, but its not about that, I don't believe taking away content in a game is ever a good idea and I'm warning everyone who reads this now that we CAN NOT let this become the normality of gaming, if other companies see that this formula works then they will copy it, the next thing you know your up to your eyeballs with games that copy bungies business ethics. can we really afford for that to happen? what ever happens to games being about fun? games should be about having fun not whos spending more money. take ESO for instance, HUGE game HUGE population, even larger support teams. Bethesda has it right, there making high quality games, yea they take a little longer but look what you get in the end. now I know there are some out there that are going to say ESO is buggy, and your right it is, but there working on it, and are taking there work seriously. what has bungie shown us? they take alot of time flying all over the world and obviously have enough time to party and take pictures, then they post them, seems an awful lot like to me at least there gloating about there success and how much money they were able to gather. I don't remember bungie ever doing this in the past.

Editado por CavScout00: 8/4/2015 7:26:25 PMI quit playing after CE hard dropped and recently started playing once i found out i could upgrade my The Devil You Know with zen, send it, and crowd control. I even took it and defeated skolas (after no burn patch) with it. Ran VoG with it initially and parts of CE when it launched. I get asked all of the time what hand cannon is that. So glad I didnt dismantle it when CE first dropped. Its nice to break it out on a daily or no burn nightfall and put it to work because it can still be relevant. Just fyi: I'm a day oner who cant get a fatebringer to drop. Another reason why we should be able to keep them. The rewards are terrible for the effort spent in the game. I gave up on getting one 6 months ago. 40+ runs and i dont know how many templar only cps i completed. So it cant be that OP if ive done everything ingame without one. The same for any other weapon that people say is a must. So as far as balancing goes I dont see an issue. Im a hand cannon guy is the only reason i wanted it. Just let me keep my TDYK
-
Signed. I want the huge new arsenal, but my Vex stays in my vault/inventory forever
-
I want to keep my Vex Mythoclast as a trophy of Year 1
-
Signed. I want some new shiny fresh guns to play with, that's part of the hunt, part of the fun, but not at the expense of nukeing all my existing guns. I have worked very hard for my old guns. I have grown to love my old guns. I have become very comfortable with my old guns. I have a story to tell about my old guns. My legend is made up in part to my old guns. I mix in new stuff all the time in Destiny and my daily life in general, but I never throw out old faithful, never. I really hope I dont have to :((

1 RespuestaWe should be able to use what we want to use. Like gjallarhorn, why nerf it? Bring other rockets closer in damage, it feels stupid when you shoot a boss with a radegast. That's why we use black hammer or ice breaker. Anyway me and my 7 other clan mates agree with all the above. Let us keep and use what we want to use, it's our job to enjoy your game and yours to keep having fun and being creative making interesting things for us all to enjoy. Ascension was a step forward
-
Signed! I want to carry my fatebringer forever!
-
When Bungie mentioned nerfing black hammer specifically, that was a huge indicator that at the very least RAID WEAPONS WILL ASCEND. If they didn't why would Bungie bother to nerf the BH?? As long as raid weapons ascend, I will be happy
-
Liked bump bump.
-
Liked. Anyone else?
-
I understand why from a business perspective. In another year they can "re release" guns in another dlc. Without spending resources starting from scratch. Do I like that plan? Not really, no. If that's not what they intend I'd be glad. Personally I love running around with word of crota and I hope that they can make a good hand cannon to replace it
-
1 RespuestaWhy do we love these guns more than the guns in other fps shooters? Because god damn it that gun is mine! I worked my ass off to get it..I leveled it...it's been my primary for nearly a year! That gun...is...MINE! The guns are the game. If they just gave us new so so weapons but made the dmg gap high enough to make out old weapons useless...game over man. I play this game for my love of a few select weapons...most being primaries. I also point out that 90% of the queens weapons suck, the fallen weapons are...eh...so we continue to use vog and crota weapons. Maybe you use that non raid wep with the perfect roll....again...that weapon is yours! The only reason this game is fun and addicting is because our guns are in there. Take away our guns...might as well take away the game.
