Here's my summarized speculation on The Taken King....
We know The Taken are a new race
Therefore, the king has not been taken away but instead there is a King OF The Taken race
That King is likely Oryx as it has been leaked he is the new Raid boss and it makes sense in terms of the Hive Pantheon.
There is concept art from before launch of a hunter in the jungle hiding from cabal AND Fallen enemies with glowing green eyes. This is likely The Taken. Races of the enemies we have fought but instead taken and manipulated and controlled, likely by Oryx. Bungie has a history with doing this. Look at the flood. By Halo 3-4 there were flood variants of all the covenant enemy types.
This reminded me of another piece of concept art showing those Pyramid ship things that look like they are shooting "abducting" beams down at the surface of a planet. I think these beams are either capturing fallen and cabal to convert them into Taken. Or the beams themselves are exerting the "mind control" on the Fallen and Cabal.
So wait.. PYRAMID ships? This got me thinking... Ok, so Egyptian. Trials of Osiris... What's the connection here to Osiris?
Well I looked up Oryx on google. It turns out an Oryx is an animal native to Egypt. K, even more connections to Osiris.
I also remember the mission where it's explained that Osiris had a lot of knowledge on the shrines of Oryx..
So here's my working theory...
Osiris was obsessed with the vex time travel mechanics as well as the power of the darkness. I believe the Osiris came to harness the power of time travel in order to go back and study the birth of the darkness... Upon doing so, he was corrupted by the darkness into... Oryx. BOOM!
Both start with O. An Oryx has strong ties to Egypt. This is also why the Taken ships have the pyramid shape.
I understand this puts a time paradox into the works but so far that hasn't stopped Bungie playing around with time travel in the story. They can always chalk it up to space magic. It might explain why Osiris was able to gain so much knowledge on Oryx in our current timeline. It's actually HIM so maybe he was able to understand Oryx more so than any other Guardian.
I get into how the time travel scenario might play out in a logical way down in the comments below for this thread so take a browse!
Anyway, let me know your thoughts! Have fun with it!
side note
I can't stand listening to BellE Bunny on Guardian Radio. She is really bad at pvp and has little understanding of it, yet she insists on spitting her ill informed opinions constantly on the show. Every time she speaks on pvp issues (such as final round in the latest episode) I want to pull my hair out.
Sorry, had to vent after listening to latest episode.
Edit
This post was made back in June and since then enough info has come out that I doubt my theory will hold up ;) ah well it was just for fun while I was at work.
PS Looks like Belle responded to my side note. Killing me with kindness as is her mantra. I really don't like her as a host but I'll give her props for responding to me. Since I originally made this post I've stopped listening to Guardian Radio. The overall quality and discussion on the show has been going downhill for a while. As a more hardcore player, especially on the pvp side of things, I could no longer enjoy a group of very casual players discussing the game. Crucible Radio is my new jam and I love it. Highly recommend people check it out

6 RespuestasI think we will definitely see the stranger. Look at her last lines "Ah, yes. The Awoken. Out there, wavering between the light and the dark. A side should always be taken, little light. Even if it's the wrong side." "Too late, returning. How many?" "Hold position, kill the engines, and don't let them find you." Is this reference to Oryx returning? I know it was pre TDB but she can travel through time can't she. We know there will be the big cgi space battle in TTK and the leaked weapon called 'no time to explain' so just thought it would kind of fit. Just a thought.

13 RespuestasEditado por chaissyp: 6/11/2015 7:46:33 PMYou would have to suffer from Down syndrome to pay $40 for the same shit over and over again. And that $40 will be the new price for the Dlc's, watch. And the sad thing is people will buy it. When taken king release, there will be so many games out for both the ps4 and Xbox. Bungie should give up on destiny, because their greed along with activision's greed doomed this game.
and yes for all you politically correct, sensitive -blam!-s, I used the name Down syndrome in an insulting manner.
1 RespuestaI am honored i made it as a side note on your otherwise interesting and well worded post.

4 RespuestasWhy do people go this deep in thought about how the story will go in the dlc? Bungie has yet to release anything half this in depth. It's gonna be another series of story missions where you go somewhere, have your ghost scan something while you kill the same enemies as before and then it'll abruptly end leaving you wondering where the story goes now..

4 RespuestasNew map Waves Same grind More weapons Nothing really new $40

2 RespuestasThe Taken King will always be Liam Neeson.

4 RespuestasI'm kind of hoping that the Taken are Guardians that were corrupted by the Darkness. Because if that's the case then we might get to meet Toland.

3 RespuestasWhat if the taken are the flood.. Again.. Just a big NOPE for me still have nightmares from the first encounter :/

4 RespuestasYour story presented more lore than this entire game has in just your speculation. It will be a dlc with no connecting story and vaguely connect what we have already done to the story line just like HOW. This whole HOW thing is a side quest. It's off track of the traveler, the darkness and basically filler content because they can't make their own deadlines.

1 RespuestaGiven the rest of the ' new' content, I fear you're gonna be dissapointed

4 RespuestasEditado por zapfeeno: 6/10/2015 5:40:19 PMThis is a theory one of my group-mates had:

Hello and welcome guardians, this is your friendly... I feel weird saying that, I've been pretty cynical lately...neighborhood AnonPig! I'll be taking a small leave of absence, but before I go i want to leave you with just one last post. As we've been seeing "The Taken King" a lot lately and what just came crashing into my brain. There's much to wonder about the Hive, and in this case more specifically their hierarchy of structure. If I were to say they were based off of a Greek mythos, no one would question it, it's clear they have a pantheon of gods that they worship entirely. But if I were to say Oryx wasn't a king... and more specifically that Oryx wasn't a he... you'd probably want to fight me. A card I over looked was brought to my attention, queen 2 referred to Oryx as "end him." This however doesn't change the ultimate purpose of this theory only tweaks it. Time constraints on my phone allow me only this, Oryx is most likely without gender, much like the black heart, but acts in a similar fashion to the wizards. We've fought Crota, spawn of Oryx, and have heard that three eyed beauty say that now Oryx would come. We've seen what is clearly Hive leaked dlc content known as "The Taken King". But that doesn't mean the two speak of the same being. The first thing i wish to bring to your attention is the rusted lands grimoire.
as a Hive Wizard and her Knights rose to challenge the Guardians.
Notice that it says a wizard and her knights? This means one of two things, and most likely both, that she created them, and that she leads them. If this is how the structure truly works, wizards being the lead, why would Oryx be a knight? (The common assumption) Now, let's talk the thralls and the bees, if you have any questions please save them for the end. There are three Hive sects that we fight: Hidden Swarm, Spawn of Crota, and Blood of Oryx. Now I want to stress Blood of Oryx here, on the moon we see these pod things that could easily be where Hive come from, but where do those come from? I believe it's a wizard's magic and and a Hive's blood that do it.
Charged with Hive sorcery, Ogres are abominations of flesh and rage, unleashed from the deepest Hive tunnels as engines of destruction. Apocryphal lore suggests that Ogres undergo terrible transformations as they grow - agonizing rituals that gift them with might and cunning.
Oryx, using a larger concentration own blood created Crota, using less created Blood of Oryx Hive. Crota used his blood to do the same with the aid of a wizard to create the Spawn of Crota, and that leaves the Hidden Swarm. I think these are a combination of the efforts of Xol, Eir, Ur and Yul. So now that we have established the likelihood of Oryx being a wizard, and therefore female, and just how the procreate, the question becomes who's this Taken King? Well, we just fought my new favorite boss a couple weeks ago, Urrox Flame Prince, Scion of Oryx. His entire title is what is important here. Let's dissect it. Flame Prince is the simple part, clearly for their to be a Prince there must be a King. But scion is what caught my eye. Scion means descendant, but if he was directly spawned from Oryx why not just say so? I think Urrox is the Spawn of a spawn of Oryx, and therefore a scion of her. This led me to believe he's the the son of the King that will be taken, most likely taken by our new best friend Mara Sov. This brings us to my last point. Osiris. Osiris knew quite a bit about the Hive and maybe even more about Oryx than Toland and Eris.
Oryx, dead, king, Oryx, dead, king, Oryx, dead king. Three words, three bursts, nine words...Osiris??
can be heard by Master Rahool, so what do these have to do with anything? These four things? Oryx, dead, king, and Osiris, because they are all separate. I believe Osiris has found a way into the Vex networks.
I don’t know where you have gone, but I can no longer send Ghosts out to find you. Some come back— with tales of your death or how you went seeking answers from the far reaches of space and time. That you found a way to explore the Vex gate networks.
And while exploring saw a dark future. Oryx dead king is a prophecy from Osiris. We've killed one spawn of Oryx, Crota, and in the next dlc we're taking another. Oryx won't be happy with us, and she'll launch a direct attack on us because of it. I believe Osiris, just like Toland did before the Great Disaster, was trying to warn us, but we didn't listen. . Thankyou for reading! This is your friendly neighborhood AnonPig! If you're looking for more lore: AnonPig's Theories Archived

Tl:dr I don't feel like writing this too bad for you

I HIGHLY doubt Oryx is Osiris... I agree totally Oryx takes control over other races like Cabal and Fallen I mean he's called "Taken King." I believe he is a Hive god though, everything related to Oryx has been through the Hive. Crota, Son of Oryx? The Shrines? Osiris was obsessed with the Hive, Eris is obsessed with the Hive, and she is going after Oryx now that Crota is dead and she is bringing the Queen. I see another Hive themed expansion, just look at 'The Taken King' emblem. Oryx may be some kind of direct general in the Darkness army and can control other races perhaps not part of the Darkness? Maybe the picture only showed Fallen and Cabal because they aren't apart of the Darkness at all? The Fallen and Cabal seem a lot less evil than the Vex and Hive especially after what we've seen from HoW. Their mission seems to be their own. Maybe Oryx forces them to the Darkness's cause. After TTK, next expansion is Vex again, why? I think the new race is whatever Xur and The Nine are or I at least really fking hope so. Feel like we know nothing about these HUGE characters and their part in the story and it has been A FKING YEAR!! I hope Osiris's time travel interests have something to do with the Exo Stranger, I'd like them to start explaining that shit too and her involvement in all this bs. Sick of sitting here and GUESSING what all this crap means. We need story and explanation Bungie your story sucks, you're waiting too damn long.

1 RespuestaAnd then at some point he got lonely and screwed a Knight, who birthed the baby Crota. I'm a sucker for a good love story

1 RespuestaOsiris IS Oryx?!?!?! Mind Blown!!! Interesting theory, but given destiny's lack of story and past of dlc's I don't see it happening. I would love to play your version though.

7 RespuestasOsiris is not oryx now u may be on to something. What I think is that Osiris is obsessed with the vex so he when he was looking into or studying a vex portal he stumbled upon Orxys nether realm ( a nether realm is a place like where Crota is), also in the grimoire it says that vex portals may have a connection with nether realms. Once Osiris saw oryx he returned to the tower to tell the speaker. When he told the speaker what he had seen the speaker told him he was corrupted by the darkness and driven mad. The speaker being his normal pansy self had Osiris exiled. So that lead to Osiris hating the speaker which explains why most of the captions on Osiris class bonds, marks, and cloaks have hate about the speaker, and some armor pieces to.. P.S. Those triangular ships belong to the nine.

1 RespuestaI don't listen to that garbage podcast because it feels like it's very poor quality. IGN's fire team chat honestly holds the title of worst podcast ever tbh. Destin and his dick sucking buddies have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. The only guy who WAS worth listening to and was actually good and knowledgable about the game was Alfredo. The PD Podcast is honestly the most informative destiny podcast there is. Every single person on that podcast knows what it is they are talking about. I digress, but I had to say it. Your theory about The Taken King is actually pretty strong. Cheers for sharing it. P.S. I remember you kicked my ass in a clash game before. Good Game.

I hope you're wrong about the Taken. I'd much prefer a brand new enemy then just recycled stuff. But we have gotten quite a bit of recycled junk so you may be right.
