SNES was pretty much the all time great console. It was only relevant for about 5 years too, unlike my 9 year old PS3.
I had a lot of good times on the TG-16 too, but it's game library was small and sketchy.
The Genesis pioneered a lot of things, but outside of a handful of games, it was pretty bad.
The original NES was hit or miss, as was the Sega Master System. My Atari 2600 was pretty awesome prior to 1985, but it was never that great.
I avoided consoles between the SNES and the PS1, so I don't have an opinion there, but I'd have to say the PS2 had a lot of awesome games. The PS3 ramped up the graphics and impressed me for the first time, the PS4 so far has felt like they're spending too much time of visuals and not enough to time on gameplay.
I figure things will even out after a while. Even the SNES had a lot of pretty games that didn't play well for the first year or so.
As for the Xbox vs PS thing, I don't have much opinion there as they both had a lot of the same games and looked/played similarly. One generally had an edge here and there, but they were close enough that it didn't matter.
