So, the school system I'm in currently is in a pretty messed up situation. The school board approved to borrow 3 million, and one of then borrowed an extra 5 million without asking. They all forgot about it for awhile, and now its caught up to them, where theyve had to scramble to bring costs down all of a sudden. This has included cutting a total of 30 staff, mostly janitorial and administrative staff, and shutting down the crossroads school(the kids who got in big trouble, basically.), which moved all of those kids to the highschool. That was just the first wave though.
Its a bit later now, and the second wave of publicized cuts is coming; They will shut down an entire elementary school(One of five in the county) and all remaining elementary schools will become by grade, not area. That is, all 1st and 2nd graders go to this elementary school, pre k and Kindergarten to another, etc.. Another cut is the schools someehat mandatory Driver's Ed-Which they make you pay for anyway, and all the equipment(including 2 cars) was donated. The one that's up in the air, however, is the school's Latin class.
To give some background info, This school has been open 43 years, and they've had a Latin class all 43 years of it. Spanish is the only other language offered in person, with probably 30 ish kids in each class of two teachers. Latin is not an easy class- A quarter to a half of the Latin one students fail out of it. It's run by an Ex-Marine who has a Masters in Latin (Or something similar- My memory could be off) Who can also teach German. He's currently made to teach 2 classes at one over 2 periods, thst being Latin 1 and 3 at the same time, and Latin 2 and 4, in addition to an extra period watching an online class to fill in the slots left by the people they fired. Spanish is getting a trip to Spain this summer, while to my knowledge Latin has never been granted such a thing.
Some of the Latin kids have gone to protest this, having gone to a public school board meeting with an informal petition only for the meeting to be abruptly ended when they asked about Latin during the question section. They haven't given up, going with a more formal petition(That probably has close to 200 signatures by the end of today) and one of them is now signed up as an official speaker at the next meeting. They are considering a radio ad/announcement about it.
My question for all of you is, what do you think the best thing is for a solution to all of this? Answer the poll, comment below, everything is welcome.
TL;DR:
School is trying to cut its only other language due to money problems, what should happen?

For those curious, the person who borrowed the extra money has not faced any repercussions whatsoever, and has moved to a federal school nearby and therefore cannot be touched by the state or county.
Quick Edit:We've also been questioning-What exactly does this save? A single teacher's salary? An elementary school is suitable considering the situation, but what dent does this make, especially when they're already having over 2 weeks of no pay for the teachers for the next couple years?(With no mention of how much this screws over all the teacher's retirement..)
Edit 2: Lol, guys, yeah you can see the results...appreciate if you actually decide after though

1 RespuestaHard to say. Keeping Spanish would be more practical, but on the other hand, when you learn Latin, it makes learning other languages a lot easier.
-
3 RespuestasWell if you take Latin earlier on and you want to be a doctor, it will benefit you greatly.

9 RespuestasEditado por BenjyX55: 3/21/2015 12:59:32 PMSpanish has more speakers than almost any language. English and Mandarin have it beat. Possibly one other. I'm assuming you're in the US, in which case it will be good for the children at your schools to learn Spanish.

31 RespuestasLatin hasn't been relevant in what? 700 years? The only time you would even use it is if you're exorcizing a demon or using the atm in the Vatican. The schools should have Mandarin, French, Arabic, German or even Russian before Latin.

1 RespuestaEditado por Jones Burr: 3/20/2015 11:05:56 PMThat school is the complete oppose of the high school I went to. Latin class got to go to Italy, Spanish class got to go to El Paso.

2 RespuestasGet rid of Latin because Spanish is a disgusting language imo

24 RespuestasLatin clearly isn't the problem here. There's a bunch of dipshits in your school system that need a good flogging; maybe Wisconsin can loan you Scott Walker for a few weeks to get this sorted out properly?

7 RespuestasWell the problem with having a latin trip is the location. Sure you could visit the ruins of the roman empire but that takes up a great deal of time. You could visit the origin in italy but you arent exactly immersed in the language like a spanish trip to spain does for the students. The closest thing you could do is either take a trip to a legal system or create a week long festival where all you speak is latin. The latter would be quite the experience and might be something worth creating.
