How should we support ourselves?

How do we, as the community, need to take the initiative to ensure that the community as a whole is steered in the right direction? How could Bungie reasonably support us? It's open mic night in this thread. Let's hear some ideas.

There's a great amount of user generated content in groups, much of which has persisted over the years in one form or another. From a subjective point of view, I've seen: Game nights and leagues in Community Carnage and even some Flood groups. Podcasts, periodicals, and updates from P7, Bathroom Reader, and 7CX. Fan fiction from Collective Anomaly. Self-organized groups to solve Bungie's ARGs, like CompoundIntelligence Classic Bungie game love from For Carnage Apply Within. PAX events, discussion, and jokes in Penny Arcade Expo. Art and stuff from Art and Stuff. Elaborate Destiny culture investigations from Secrets of Destiny. Pop culture and community-oriented comics from Bungieball. A whole host of independent guides to user roles, vidocs, achievements, rules, and other junk. The content is largely there, just decentralized and mostly swamped over. A system of bringing that content out to light could very well meet that demand. Who does that or how it's done is up to debate. Frankly, a community consensus could be established. We see similar things happen all the time. Industry standards are made through IEEE or ISO rather than expecting a government entity to (inappropriately) determine what interface characteristics, say, your cell phone has. Likewise, a few mavericks could do something similar in #SeventhColumn, though I doubt it would be easy or quick.

I'm aware that this is a really big and complicated topic but I'm just going to list points. -Revitalize mods. The situation isn't as bad as most people make it out to be, but its far from great. -Allow some way for everyone to see the best of the groups on b.net. Prometheus pointed out that the content is there, just hard to find. Something central like the Creations Page except for groups would be so cool. Maybe it could advertise game nights, podcasts, and other stuff though a browser? Makeshyft talked about spotlights or community upvoted content. Which would advertise active groups. -Show up. All the people who really want this place should be there enjoying themselves. It would be insanely cool to see some updates to the site that satisfy some of those needs. But for now we can try to get the word out and interact with people. :^)

Starting with mods: Ever been so close to something that it was within reaching distance, but you couldn't ever get it? Imagine being a part of a navy, stuck in a submarine for two years, with no possible chance of being able to make sweet love to your SO. That's the situation with the ninjas right now. You've got a group of people capable of great things, but they are COMPLETELY weighed down by factors outside their control. Time to let them off the chain. Those shiny hammers have been nothing but neglected in recent years. Now I'm adamant that we don't need the same rule structure as B-old. We do however, need to tighten the chain on things like spam, harassment, and the like. A good solution to this, I think, would be for certain forums to endure more moderation rules than others. Offtopic can be kept exactly how it is. Let be as close to the wild west as it can. But the community forum on the other hand, needs to be kept clean to the extent that people come to understand what it's going to be like. That would do a decent job to push each forum into having it's own individual "feeling." I also understand that it's a lot easier to make the moderation rules the same across the board, but keep in mind that this is just an idea, nothing more. Titles I'm upset, you're upset, we're all upset. They should have been back a looooooooong time ago. Why haven't they been brought back? My guess is someone said "I have a better way." Turns out that better way didn't work, but someone can't swallow their pride and here we are, title-less. That's a joke, and a bad one at that. I'll cut to the chase and explain why bringing back titles is possibly the single most beneficial thing that could be done on these forums. It, by itself, could possibly clean up the entire act of everyone on this forum. How? It's gives people a reason to play nice, and it's as simple as that. Act out of line and WHACK, back to square one. Don't get me wrong, it's a stretch saying that it alone could be the cleansing act these forums so badly need, but if you can't see that potential, I don't know how else to put it. It would absolutely be something that would take a longer time frame to play out, as everything naturally sorts itself out. Members begin to ascend up the title ranks, and others take notice. Of course you'll always have those who don't care about obtaining a title at all, and live to upset, but that's how it will always be. With both titles and slightly stricter moderation, I find it hard to see that this place wouldn't right itself out in some noticeable fashion. Mentors I'm actually not going to touch base on this at all. I feel like my opinion on mentors is ignorant and insensitive, and I don't want to come away offending anyone here. That's totally opposite of what I'm trying to do here. If you really want to know, shoot me a PM and we can talk about it. That way I know whoever is asking won't be offended. Anyway, that's what I've got for now.

On the topic of mods, mentors, and titles. I'll hopefully get around to it tomorrow. I promise to make a post about these three things, though.

So, fair warning: I've got a lot in my mind on this topic, but more so ones related to it. Because I don't think I'm going to find the "right" time to dump this manifestation of thought elsewhere, it's going here. All of it. I apologize in advance if this is really scatter-brained and doesn't exactly flow from point to point. I'm going to clean it up as best I can, so everyone can understand it at the very least. My intention isn't to make myself a martyr, but I feel the need to say some things that need to be said, and I know I'm going to draw some flak for that. The tone of this post isn't at all supposed to come off as condescending or attacking. I'm just throwing out a perspective. Take a deep breath, everything is going to be alright. Also: I point out a lot of stuff with seemingly no explanation as to how to fix it. I'm throwing what I see out there as a means for others to tackle it, think about it, add to it. I finally have had some free time out of my schedule to come up with this much, and I'm going to need awhile for any more. Sorry 'erbody.
How do we, as the community, need to take the initiative to ensure that the community as a whole is steered in the right direction?
Step one: Drop everything to do about trying to "make it the way things were." It's gone, it's never coming back. Ever. The magic and everything that was the old bnet left with the site change. Earlier actually, but that's rhetorical. Segue #1: What this all comes down to is the difference in the titles. Everything that was b-old was because of Halo, and the game it was. It catered to the largest variety of counsel gamers I've ever seen. This was because of all the play styles, from casual to pro, that it was host to. Social, ranked, custom, and forge. It didn't matter what you wanted to do, the game had it. The community grew around what the game had. Sadly, right now, that's what Destiny is lacking in. There is absolutely no ability for players to use the game itself as a creative outlet. (Yes, there is some, but I'm comparing this to Halo to give you an idea. So there's zero.) There is zero benefit to being a highly skilled player unless third party leaderboards and stats are your thing. That old group of community members and players are gone because those parts of the game are missing from Destiny. What was, is dead. The sooner everyone here starts working toward something "new" collectively, and stops trying to "bring back what was" we will see a shift in the direction we need to go. I'm not at all pointing the finger at any one person, or group of people. This is a nameless thing. Something that I was totally about (the whole let's make it what it used to be thing) until recently when I saw it was a part of the problem. Realize this: You, me, and all the other people who don't suck (jk, but really) were there for that awesome time. As a matter of fact, it's what has me, you, and many others like us still here to this day. Bring those memories with you. Bring that experience of that era with you and use it as a model to build something completely new, here. New game. New site. Lots of new members. What's going to be the community, is going to be new also. So let's all start moving in the right direction.
How could Bungie reasonably support us?
As stated above (and I'll defend it to the death) the reason we don't have the same kind of community we used to is the difference in the games. Destiny doesn't support that same kind of creative output and community interaction that Halo did. Sure, these changes are hard to bring about and this is a different discussion entirely, but at the very least, Destiny needs to have custom games and bigger party sizes. We need a game that supports the type of community sought after. You need to build something in a fashion of "If you build it, they will come." Well, they built it, and look what they have to show. This is a tough thing to do. How do you make this happen? I'm not entirely sure, but you start by being heard. However, let's not forget that Bungie's support extends further than the game itself. It's also here, on this website. A part of the issue is that there has been very, very little input taken from the community about the site itself in comparison to the game. Is that obviously going to happen? Yes, the game comes first. But the level of appeasement toward the game verses bnet is ludicrous. If there was half as much attention paid to people on the forums giving feedback about the forums, in relation to those giving feedback about the game, we'd have had titles back by now. Keep stressing what changes we need on this site. Vocalize that to the right people, the right audience, so it can change. This is all about discussion on group features, site features, and the like. What do you want done to this site to make it more enjoyable for us? We need to get a big list of that together, somewhere, and get it to where it needs to go to make a difference. Yeah, that's super vague, but everyone should be on the same page for that. We've got a big group of people who are mentors, ninjas, or forum personalities that are more than capable of building a following for stuff like this. "Use ya powahs!" Segue #2: This new community manager seems promising enough. Might be worth it to try and lure him here to listen to what we have to say. So, that's about all I have for now. I've got more to add, but I'm mentally stretched for now. Things like titles, mentors, ninjas, and the like are something I want to post about too, eventually. I'll either add to this post, or keep everyone in the loop about where I drop the next piece.

      • I think Progo gets it, more interaction, more presence, more input directly from Bungie's employees in the community. One could write a breakthrough paper or give an incredible lecture on any subject, but it won't matter if you're not published or heard... Feels like being an ant in a marching crowd wearing boots. It's up to Bungie to open a stage for the old crowd/community, so far it's pretty much all Destiny all the time adorned with numbers and statistics, and topics on the nerf, smurf, boots, loot and flashy butt flaps. Seems they're a little bit interested though, seeing DeejCozmo's posts/interaction?

Well with the fact we have another manager could be great. This community is pretty big and it's hard to satisfy everyone in it. Personally I think we should have forum titles for one. We've been waiting a long time for them. I would hope we would get the old ones back but I know that won't happen. Also we should have more game nights , but not organized by us, but organized by the Bungie Team. Maybe an actual community team, not a team that tells us about the updates , not a Bungie spokesmen team but a Bungie interactive team. Although Bungie is doing a great job now. I just think they should expand their community involvement.
