Tell The Halo Project if you liked or did not like it when 343 Industries showed part of Sierra 117's face and why.

It made total sense, both practically and thematically. Practically because at this point, the silent protagonist niche is void, John no longer fills that role and it's arguable he never truly did. How can I "project" myself onto him if he has a name I don't share, a voice I don't have, and a personality and backstory that isn't mine? It was obvious Halo 4 was moving away from that tired old tradition by developing his character, which brings me to my next point. By removing the helmet they're showing that the legendary Master Chief has now become John, an individual human now starting to realize his humanity. Showing his face was the symbolic representation of that growth. Of course fanboys are going to deny that because they can't move past obsolete writing from 10 years ago, but what 343i did made perfect sense.

It wasn't my favorite reveal of all time.

On one hand, no. The entire point was that you are the Master Chief. On the other hand, it's good that they're making him his own character. In the first trilogy you may as well have been playing as a brick.

We only got to see his wrinkly black eyes.

I find 2 things wrong with showing his face in the end. 1) The idea of a silent protagonist/faceless protagonist is for the players to project themselves on him/her, increasing immersion. Its hard to do that when not only does he have a some what obvious personality, but a face as well. 2)Do you remember that thread from the Halo Reach days about the value of a spartans helmet? As in that helmet represents the spartan and under it is the human? By taking off his helmet in the end and showing players it, by that logic John is stepping down from his previous position to a human one. I kind of liked John the badass spartan, and probably will have difficulty learning to like John the human(ish). If they were going to reveal his face, it should be the end of John's story/ the series rather then a half way mark.

It pissed me off. Plus, that was an awful, unrewarding Legendary Ending. I would have preferred something that reflects on what happened to The Didact; did he simply die or what?

Edited by BerzerkCommando: 3/2/2013 2:00:30 PMIt doesn't bother me if they do or don't. If they do I just want them to make it look like the face that is described in The Fall of Reach novel. Also 343 isn't the only ones that shown it. In the Boot Camp comic they shown it a couple of times.

It was just his eyes, not a big deal.
-
Metaphorically it was needed after all the dialogue between Cortana and John.

Edited by rocketFox: 3/2/2013 2:06:33 AM
"If he takes off the helmet, he should be you," says Marty O'Donnell, Halo's audio director. "I mean, that's the big deal. Taking off the helmet is unacceptable." Engineering lead Chris Butcher agrees: "It's your experience. You have to be able to pour yourself into that icon." When nongamers look at the Master Chief's helmet, they see a forbidding, anonymous mask. But when gamers look at it, they see a mirror. They see themselves.
So much for Bungie's intentions. Showing even a bit of the Master Chief's face is a colossal mistake, and it says a lot about 343i that they don't understand this basic idea.

Edited by A Traffic Cone: 3/2/2013 7:21:30 AMIt's just his eyes. Besides, it adds more mystery towards exactly what the librarian did to him. He technically may not even be fully human anymore. To be honest, I think now was the perfect time to finally show off something of the chiefs face. Also, it adds more character to him. The first three games I felt like I was playing as a giant robot with limited vocab. Now i feel as though I'm taking the role of someone who actually has a personality, even feelings.

It's fine. IMO Bungie shouldn't have made hiding his face such a damned big deal. No point to it .
-
Decent enough to likely satisfy any folks who have been waiting, but not so revealing that his secrecy about showing himself is ruined. To be honest it surprised me when I beat it on Legendary.
-
They didn't really reveal his face. They showed you the area around his eyes, which was pretty heavily shadowed. When we get a clear shot of his ENTIRE face, then I'll consider it revealed.
-
They did it right, so I don't mind. They didn't really show much anyway.
-
He had the right face IMO, although his eyes should have been an odd colour like the other Spartans.
-
I thought he was supposed to be brownish-red haired and extremely pale, not look like a generic action protagonist. On the whole it seemed unecissary, his helmet is his face as far as I'm concerned.
-
No, but I'm glad they kept it to the eyes.
-
Eh, it didn't really care, you didn't get to see much anyway.
-
I didn't really care.

Edited by KERN SX117: 3/1/2013 11:35:05 PMIt didn't really bother me, saying how they basically just showed his eyes. Although he kind of looked like Steve Downes.
-
Not particularly.
-
No I didn't like it. it scared me
-
I hope they don't go any further and actually reveal his face... That would ruin it for me.
-
It was decent. Not too revealing, but more than what Bungie would have done.
