So this game has been out for a while. But some people have only had this game from December. So far I see many players making the same mistakes that I use to make when the game first came out. This is for new players who aren't sure about some of Destiny's basic mechanics.
Through observing players in the game and on the forums many players have trouble leveling up and obtaining effective weapons. Many players have logged plenty of hours but still have blue gear and can't break level 26. I think after playing an easy campaign and not having to purchase anything most players are used to missions or getting the random drop to better stuff. You could be waiting forever for RNG to give you all legendary gear that can get you to level 31. So this is assuming you did the easy main story campaign and are at minimum level 20.
So here are some simple steps to get gear.
Build Vanguard rep and marks. Why vanguard you ask? It is the quickest and easiest to rank up. Don't go after factions in the beginning they require crucible marks and they are currently take a lot longer to gain. Also I see many new players put on a faction class piece to build up rep while sitting on 200 vanguard marks unable to use them.
So first you want to constantly build up vanguard rep and marks. Do all the daily vanguard bounties. Do the public events getting gold tier. This can get you marks very quickly. You can get a time table as to when they will happen on
destinypublicevents.com
Also you want to play the Vanguard strike list that is near your level. This gives you marks, rep, and engrams.
Once you get Rank 3 you will earn commendations that you can use to get the rest of your armor. If you are lucky you may receive a Vanguard weapon or armor that you don't have as a random reward for getting tier 3 and on.
Also you want to do the Weekly Heroic Strike for strange coins and not to forget a lot of vanguard rep. If you can't do level 30 yet don't sweat it. Do the ones you can and save your strange coins. Xur Agent of the Nine comes to the tower every Friday and Saturday usually he will sell an exotic armor piece for your class. This armor will boost your level greatly. It can help you get to level 32 later.
You also want to do the Daily Heroic missions. These offer marks, ascendant materials, and other materials such as relic iron that can level up your gear.
Ok I reached level 29 now what. This is the level I would start trying to do the Weekly Nightfall Strike on. If you have a best buddy to carry you on lower levels then even greater. Now soloing a strike on level 29 can be difficult so I would suggest looking for people on
destinylfg.net
This should be the first thing you do after every weekly reset. It gives you a lasting XP bonus for the whole week. This includes all reputation. Also the Nightfall offers the chance at exotics, legendaries, materials, or strange coins.
ok but what about weapons?
I have a few suggestions but remember they are 150 marks and you can buy 2 per character every 3 weeks since they cap you at a 100 marks a week. I can say strengthen whatever you think is the weak link in your arsenal. My favorite Vanguard weapon and suggestion is the LDR 5001 sniper. If you don't have a good sniper I would suggest it since keeping distance from enemies is key in hard strikes like Nightfalls.
Once you build up some vanguard commendations I would move on to Crucible next. They usually have some good weapons like the Saterinne Rapier a scout rifle that has Firefly perk. A perk that is pretty handy for certain missions and parts of the raid. And Crucible has a bigger variety for sale then the factions so get it to rank 3. After that I would pick a faction and level it exclusively they have many rewards that aren't visible in their vendor store.
So once you are level 31 I would suggest playing Crota's End level 30 Raid. This is where you will get the end game gear to get to level 32 and grab the best legendary gear. Technically you don't need to do the Vault of Glass but I suggest you do it is quite an experience and more fun than Crota in my opinion. Also there are some worth while chances at exotics including the Vex Mythoclast which is a monster in PVP. Although level 30 Vault of Glass I would consider harder than level 30 Crota so I would do the Crota Noramal Raid first.
To prepare for the Raid it is best to watch some you tube videos so you will have an idea of what is going on and how to be a help for your team. For Crota you can do it on level 30 but the enemies are upscaled to 32 later so you will feel like you are using a pea shooter against most enemies especially during the Deathsinger portion.
Also if you manage to get a good launcher with tracking on it level it up and use it for Crota you will be more successful when trying to down him since you have a better potential to miss with regular launchers.
Once you hit level 32 it is time for the Level 33 hard Crota Raid. Getting the Raid elemental primaries are great rewards for completing this.
More tips...
Tip # 1
Also in the beginning if you cap on glimmer which is capped at 25k don't sit on it. Every time it is about to fill buy a heavy ammo synthesis or two from the gunsmith. You will thank me later
Tip #2
Try to turn in your bounties simultaneously it seems to lead to greater chances in getting an exotic bounty
Tip #3
Grind Eris bounties each day and complete all of her mission. You can get a great legendary fusion rifle Murmur and level 31 gauntlets if you didn't get level 31 gauntlets by now. Level 4 Eris rep can also unlock radiant material exchange which can be useful leveling up if you don't have enough shards
13 RepliesEdited by kklathan8613: 2/8/2015 9:21:30 AM*** Copy / Paste from a thread I made for the DoD alliance*** Hello World! This is intended primarily for those new Guardians whom have recently come to the game, although it is a good collection of info. Please give it a look. If you see an area where I can add to it, please post a comment. I will give full credit. Good Resources http://destinylfg.net/ - Good way to find groups. http://destinypublicevents.com/ Good way to find upcoming Public Events http://destinytracker.com/ Good way to get more details on another player (or yourself) http://planetdestiny.com/ Great source of info, gear reviews and has a full Database to look up items Different Kinds of Currencies Glimmer - Capped at 25,000. This is used to buy perks on gear and ammo synthesis from the Gunsmith. Well, mainly. Vanguard Marks - You get these for completing Public Events and from Strike Playlists. Used to buy Weapons and Armor from the Vanguard Vendors. You can get 100 per week and hold 200 max at any one time. Crucible Marks - You get these from the Crucible only. Used to buy weapons and armor from the Faction and Crucible Vendors. You can get 100 per week and hold 200 max at any one time. Motes of Light - You get these from engrams and from "leveling up" after you hit rank 20. Used to buy vanity items from the Speaker, and is used in some Exotic Bounties. Strange Coins - Used to buy Exotic pieces from Xur. Commendations - Used to buy Expansion 1 Weapons, Chest and Helmets from the vendors. Obtained from rank 3 and up gift baskets. How Do I Get Legendary Armor You can get Legendary Armor from Engrams, Rank up gift baskets, Crucible and Strikes, Chests and the Raids. Blue Engrams: These will give you Legendary gear very rarely (3% or less chance). This can be Launch or Expansion 1 gear. Purple Engrams: These will give you Legendary gear, or Assendant Shards/Energy. This can be Launch or Expansion 1 gear. Rank up gift baskets: In my experience you get a Legendary piece of gear about 40% of the time from the respective Vendor's stock, perks will be random. This will be Expansion 1 gear. Crucible and Strikes: Upon completion of a Roc Strike (level 26) or any Crucible match, you have a slight chance of a Legendary or better piece of gear. This will be Launch or Expansion 1 gear. Chests: Very rarely will you receive a Legendary piece of gear from a non-Raid chest. Can be Launch or Expansion 1 gear. Raids: Vault of Glass encounters will give you Launch raid armor / weapons and Expansion 1 exotic weapons, Crota's End will give you Expansion 1 gear. The Difference Between Launch and Expansion 1 Gear Look in the upper right hand corner of the icon for that piece of gear, do you see a little Roman Numeral ( I )? If so it is Expansion 1, which has higher damage (weapon) or higher Light level (armor). All vendors currently sell Expansion 1 gear exclusively. (Besides the Speaker, who sells only vanity items) How Exotics Work, and What They Are You are allowed to equip only 1 Exotic Armor piece and 1 Exotic Weapon at any time. Dismantling an Exotic piece (weapon or armor) will give you an Exotic Shard. You need 1 Exotic Shard to max any Exotic. You can buy Exotic Shards from Xur each weekend for 7 Strange Coins. New Vendor Armor The new vendor armor will take you up to level 31. Vendor Boots: 75 Marks Vendor Gloves: 75 Marks Vendor Chest: 75 Marks + 1 Commendation Vendor Helmet: 120 Marks + 1 Commendation How to get Commendations You will get 1 Commendation with the rank up gift basket upon reaching rank 3 with the respective faction. Vanguard faction will give you Vanguard Commendations. Crucible faction will give you Crucible Commendations. Dead Orbit, Future War Cult and New Monarchy will give you Crucible Commendations commonly. You will occasionally not receive one. (unknown if this is a bug) How to Upgrade Gear To reach max you need upgrade materials. The last 3 Increase Damage / Armor perks on all Legendary gear need Either Ascendant Energy (weapons) or Shards (armor). Expansion 1 Raid Armor requires Radiant Materials, which only come from Crota's End Raid encounters + Chests, or from dismantling Raid Armor or Weapons. How to Get Upgrade Materials Ascendant mats can be found in Legendary Engrams, Rank up gift baskets, Chests, Raids, Public Events or from deconstructing Legendary gear. Legendary Engrams: 2-3 Mats Rank up gift baskets: 2-3 Mats Chests: 2-3 Mats (usually only in Raids, otherwise very rare) Raids: 2-3 Mats per encounter Public Events: Chance of 1 Mat upon completing a Public Event with 3 gold stars. Deconstructing Legendary Gear: 2-3 (OR) 5-6 To get the maximum amount of mats from deconstructing weapons, get the max amount of exp possible on the weapon, When you unlock the last perk (note you do not have to buy any perks, just unlock them) you will get 5-6 Energy instead of 2-3 Energy from deconstructing it. How Many Upgrade Mats Do You Need To upgrade a Launch Legendary you need 18 Ascendant Mats To upgrade an Expansion 1 Legendary you need 18 Ascendant Mats To upgrade an Expansion 1 Raid piece you need 21 Radiant Mats How Much Light to Level You need exactly 12 Light for each level past 20. Level 30 - 120 Light Level 31 - 132 Light Level 32 - 144 Light What is X Armor's Light Level Launch Legendary - 27 Light Launch Exotic - 30 Light Launch Raid Armor - 30 Light Expansion 1 Legendary - 33 Light Expansion 1 Exotic - 36 Light Expansion 1 Raid Armor - 36 Light How Do I Reach X Level Just add up the light level. For each level above 20 you need 12 Light. For quick reference: To reach level 29 you need: 4x Launch Legendary Armor To reach level 30 you need: 3x Launch Raid Armor and 1 Launch Exotic (or) 4x Launch Raid Armor To reach level 31 you need: 4x Expansion 1 Legendary Armor To reach level 32 you need: 3x Expansion 1 Raid Armor and 1 Expansion 1 exotic (or) 4x Launch Raid Armor How Levels Affect Damage http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2h9t6b/this_is_how_light_levels_affect_your_gameplay_and/ This is ONLY PvE. The Crucible is normalized, which means that higher levels mean pretty much nothing. How to Farm Glimmer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVHfwukdc14 You must do this on Heroic for the yellow health bar Legionairs to appear. You must use Network Keys (Cabal Glimmer Consumable). You can also kill the first drop ship of spawns. Doing this I net about 3k Glimmer per 10 minutes or roughly 18k Glimmer per hour, plus glimmer drops. How to Reset Heroic Story Missions Select the Story Mission you want by hitting the SQUARE button, then when selecting the Difficulty, hit the SQUARE button AGAIN. A pop up box will ask if you want to restart the mission. How to Open the Vault of Glass Solo - Any Class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVkb2Y8yXr4 This can be used to get some free Ascendants each week. Crotas End - 1st Chest Solo - Any Class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TojU28CHoFg You will most likely NOT get this chest the first time. There are something like 10 different rooms that the chest could be in, which one it is in is random. Each time you wipe the chest jumps to another room. It may take 3 tries, it may take 30. Pray to RNGeebus. Crotas End - Thall Abyss (Darkness) Solo - Any Class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYKqOQNpTww You can use a Sniper Rifle to kill the Knight. And use a Sniper Rifle to kill the Ogre.

Ok guys. Quick summary of games leveling system. 1. Do bounties for 4 days. 2. Nightfall and weekly. 3.Buy vendor and shoot past level for VoG. 4. Skip VoG and do Crota for a few weeks. 6. Congrats! You're now out of destiny content.

Edited by ScribeTheMad: 2/9/2015 8:18:00 PMAlso, sniper rifles with Armor Piercing rounds (like the vendor LDR) can shoot through some walls (has trouble with angled surfaces) which can be great for nailing that mob that just ducked into cover to recharge his shield. While leveling (i.e. always), don't waste ascendant/radiant mats. Meaning if you get a drop for a pair of Pulse Rifle boots and you main Hand Cannon don't max those boots unless you have to, get the Hand Cannon boots and then max those.

Interesting thing I've noticed but haven't been able to test thoroughly. Public events on the moon seem to have a chance to reward that Radiant trash, whereas earth ones don't seem to. If you let a few build up you'll notice any time you get a new one it groups them together, but it seems to treat moon and earth public event reward packages as different.

2 RepliesTip # 2 is not correct. Exotic bounties are .2% chance whether you hand in 1 or 12. Handing in more than one only increases your percentage because you are doing it more than once. It's like buying 12 lottery tickets. You aren't 12x more likely to win, you just get 11 more chances than one. Good stuff though, otherwise. Especially the heavy ammo tip with the glimmer cap.

1 ReplyNoobs listen up. I wish this post was out when I started. You get more out of the game being smarter unlike me. Listen to this post.

I can't remember the name of them but those things you get 200 glimmer for at the cryptarch...I save those in my storage for a rainy day. I am usually at the glimmer cap but once in a while I have to drop glimmer on something and go down to 5000 glimmer. I have over 50k saved up in those things that can be cashed in at any time with no farming.

3 Replies*** Another Copy / Paste from a similar thread I made for the DoD Alliance *** Hello Guardians of Dad-ity. Today I will be focusing on Weapons and Armor with some subclass perks thrown in. People see stats on a weapon, or a perk on armor that appears to be great but in reality just works out to be kinda meh. I will try to provide numbers so you know actually what a perk does, how it affects your chosen playstyle is something that only you can discover. Please note that everything here is for PvE. In the Crucible (excluding Iron Banner to some extent) everything is Normalized. That is defense and attack do not matter. Level modifiers are also disabled. All that matters is Impact, Weapon Type and the perks on each individual weapon. Weapons: Side by Side Comparison of all Weapons In Game (no perks) All Vendor Version Weapon Perks List of "best" vendor weapons by category (currently attainable). Note this is only my opinion. Autorifle: Vanquisher VIII (New Monarchy) Why? Best Impact, Good Perks. ---- Non-Faction version: Up For Anything (Vanguard) Why? 2nd best Impact. Scout Rifle: Saterienne Rapier (Crucible) Why? Best perks, great stats. Handcannon: TFWPKY 1969 (Crucible) Why? Best all around. Pulse Rifle: Three Little Words (Crucible) Why? Because it has more then 300% of the Impact of the next highest 331 Pulse Rifle (excluding Red Death, an Exotic) Sniper Rifle: You can go with either LDR 5001 (Vanguard) or Y-09 Longbow Synthesis (Crucible). Both are about the same, but the vendor version of LDR5001 is much better then the Longbow. Fusion Rifle: Murmur (Eris Morn Quest). Hands down. Why? Choice between 2 damage types (Solar and Arc), great charge rate, fantastic impact. Shotgun: I would go with Two to the Morgue (Crucible). Why? Um, because I think it handles better. I would rather have an experienced PvPer's opinion on this one as my opinion is more of a WAG then anything. Rocket Launcher: One Way Ticket 000 (Vanguard). Why? 2 rockets and cluster bombs. I wish it had tracking. Machine Gun: Against All Odds (Crucible) Why? It has the highest Impact, at the cost of the lowest RoF. This is mainly a playstyle choice but if you get one of these with Field Scout (50 round magazine) then you can kill 25 Guardians in the crucible with one magazine (assuming all headshots). Absolutely wrecks in PvE as well. *** Stats on Weapons. What they are and what they do. *** VISIBLE STATS Attack Higher attack allows your weapons to damage higher-level opponents. This stat modifies the Impact stat when you are higher or lower level than your target (reducing or increasing damage). Rate of Fire The number of shots per minute this weapon can fire. The higher the number the faster your gun will eject bullets or less time needed between trigger pulls (on semi-autos) Impact Increases the damage inflicted by each round. This stat is modified by Attack, your character level vs. the level of the target you are shooting at, the range of the target vs. your weapon's Range and the target's Defense. Range Increase the effective range of the weapon. This stat determines the distance that your shots hit for 100% damage before they begin falling-off to 50% damage. Range also affects the minimum and maximum size of your “bloom” circle when hip-firing. Fusion Rifles don't suffer damage fall-off, but instead Range determines the speed of the projectile fired from these guns. (Note: Sights play a vital role in determining damage by increasing the Range of your weapon while aiming. Each Sight has a Range multiplier) Stability Decreases weapon recoil when fired continuously. This makes your character move less when firing so you can hit the same target repeatedly. Reload Decreases the time it takes to reload this weapon. The higher the value the faster you reload your gun. It is important to note that each type of gun has its own base reload speed and that the bar you are seeing is moving from 1-100% of the fastest you can reload THAT weapon type. Magazine The number of shots that can be fired before reloading. Each gun has its own magazine size and some are larger or smaller than others. Note that you can increase the bar from 1-100% of the amount of ammo you can carry for THAT weapon. Charge Rate (Fusion Rifles only) Rate at which the weapon charges. The higher the number the faster your Fusion Rifle charges before firing. Blast Radius (Rocket Launchers only) Increases the explosion radius of this weapon. Blast damage falls-off from the center of the explosion outward. The higher this value the more damage enemies will take when not being hit directly by the blast. Velocity (Rocket Launchers only) Increases the speed of projectiles fired by this weapon. This is the speed at which your rockets travel to their target. NOT VISIBLE STATS Optics Affects zoom factor, multiplies the Range stat. Optics is determines how much your weapon will zoom while aiming before taking into account the Sight have equipped. Handling How quickly you aim, raise, and lower your gun. This stat is a combination of the previously mentioned factors. You can receive bonuses to each one separately, but they all fall under Handling. Recoil Affects the strength and trajectory of gun kick. This is a combination of several factors: the Stability of your weapon, the Rate of Fire of your weapon and how good you are at holding your aim steady under these conditions. Inventory Affects initial ammo when spawning and maximum capacity. *** How does Damage actually Work *** First off, Level Difference. If you are the same level, or if you are above the level of your target then you do full damage per shot. If you are 1 level below your target you do 25% less damage, 2 levels is 35% less damage, 3 levels is 50% less damage, and 4 levels or more is no damage at all. There is a cap on how much damage you can do per shot, this is dependent upon weapon type and Impact. When your damage is shown in gray you have hit that cap. This prevents you from taking a 1 Impact 331 attack Autorifle and just mowing down mobs on Earth with one shot. A 331 Attack weapon will do roughly 15% more damage to a monster level 22 or highe (assuming that you are still below cap) then that same weapon would at 300 Attack. It scales pretty linearly with approximately 5% more damage with each upgrade past 300. Impact determines how much damage each individual round does. The more impact, the more damage per shot you do. Attack modifies Impact. Weapon type also modifies Impact. A sniper rifle for example will do more damage with a low impact body shot then a Handcannon with much higher impact. This Page has the breakdown of how Precision Damage, Flinch and Zoom (base zoom) are modified by weapon type. Weapon type modifies Precision damage. All weapons within a type share the same multiplier. Weapon type Modifies Flinch. All weapons within a type share the same multiplier, High Impact Rounds modify this. Weapon type modifies Zoom. All weapons within a type share the same multiplier, individual sights modify this. *** Common Weapon Perks: What they are and What they do *** This webpage Here has a list of most if not all of the available weapon perks, and what they do with percentages. Some notable ones to stay away from: Mulligan. Gives you a 5% chance ( or 1 in 20 rounds ) of having a missed shot return to the magazine. Vacuum. Doubles ammo pickup radius

1 Replyone tip for those of you thinking of making another class. for the longest time i've ran 3 titans....basically bored and making a warlock this week. however, i have a full set of lv33 light warlock gear and an obsidian mind in the bank by planning ahead. all those legendary engrams that gave me warlock armor i saved. if anyone is considering a new class save the legendary armor up first, will take you to lv31 ultra quick
-
If your favourite items are maxed out on XP, equip other items on your inventory even if you are not planning to use them, when returning bounties. Armors and weapons with full XP give more Ascendant materials / other materials when dismantling them. Note that you dont need to actually purchase the upgrades, its enough that you unlock them.
-
1 ReplyPRO GUIDE: Give up, you're already too far behind.
-
Also don't forget to have any item you are leveling up equipped when you go to the tower. When you do anything, from checking the post office, to decrypting engrams, and especially turning in bounties, equipped items are the ones that get leveled up (I know this is obvious to most people, but when I started I thought weapons/armor got leveled up when being used). Also a good tip I heard and am using now is to not cash out consumables from killed foes (axiomatic beads, resupply codes, etc.) until you really need them (are zero in glimmer). 'Cause it's a good way to get around the 25000 glimmer cap, besides buying ammo synth packs. I currently have 20,000 banked in consumables to go with 20,000 in glimmer, so I'll be ready if another Iron Banner type situation comes up where I need more than 25, 000 in glimmer on hand.

I would also add to that: Tip #4-Do not delete armor that isnt for your class, especially if you intend to make any of the other classes. Example: For the majority of the time up until new years I played a warlock only and constantly got legendary gear for hunters. So just after new years I made a hunter and started the laborious grind to be able to wear all the gear sitting in my vault... the result.... I went from a level 20 hunter to a level 28 hunter in less than 5 minutes. Tip #5- Grind out the strikes as often as you can if only for the green and blue armor... you'll need the mats from deleting them to upgrade your legendary/exotic armor in the future.
-
Side note - other than ships and shaders, factions are useless. I have a pile of Dead Orbit and FWC stuff all from RoC strikes, never messed around with them. Best piece of advise, max RoC strikes, do bounties and daily heroic. You'll gear up fast.

Edited by alccode: 2/8/2015 11:42:27 PMExcellent advice. To the new players out there, OP is solid advice that'll make things easier. I can't stress enough how I agree with the need to get to level 31 before tackling Crota. Unless you want to get carried, having level 30 vs 31 will be the difference between night and day. If you're missing ascendant shards for getting the non-Crota armor fully levelled, make sure you do this: - get a gold rating in a public event each day as you get a chance to earn ascendant shards; - Vault of Glass regularly rewards you with ascendant shards as you complete the various stages; - once you get all the Vanguard/Crucible/Faction vendor gear you want, keep grinding Vanguard marks so you can buy Legendary armor from the Vanguard vendor. When dismantled, they will always give you a set of ascendant shards. Gloves and boots are best for this as they cost far fewer marks than helmets or chestpieces. Finally, if you are running low on the armor mats needed for your class (like Plasteel plating for Titans or Hadronic Essence for Warlocks) - which is especially a risk for newer players - a good way of farming them is to farm glimmer (Google "glimmer farming Exclusion Zone" for how) and then either buy green engrams from the Cryptarch or green helmets from your respective class Vanguard armour vendor (Cayde, Zavala, or Ikora). Then dismantle them for the armor mats. Another way is to run the Strike playlist and dismantle all the blue and green armor you get. Since you need to do these strikes anyway for the Vanguard marks, you can kill two birds with one stone by grinding strikes, then switching to Exclusion Zone for glimmer farming when you find strikes start getting tedious. Good luck!

13 RepliesSo here is where I'm at. I've played 99.9% solo pve and finally tried regular strikes. Everybody seemed to know what to do except me. One even threatened to turn me in for AFK. I wasn't, I was still back at the beginning killing everything in sight. I sent a message back and we ended up being friends. They "helped" me with the strike playlist. Mostly just told me where to stand and stay there. I really didn't learn much, but got enough marks to get better gauntlets. Between that experience and being stuck on siege of the warmind for several days, I'm not sure I would enjoy that much stuff going on at once. Especially with 5 other people that think this is actual life and death. So, what's a guardian to do? Can I just kill low level boars and make my way to lvl 32?
