I've also noticed that there is a surprising lack of willingness among people on both sides to back up their claims, although it's definitely more noticeable amongst the religious. If you're an agnostic, you don't have to make any claims about God, because both the existence and nonexistence of a god are empirically unprovable. This leaves you free to inspect the claims of others, because you're not busy bearing the burden of proof.
