The rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9) is an enlisted rank, and there by should be addressed by rank/name (Master Cheif is short for Master Chief Petty Officer), a NCO (non commisioned officer) should never be addressed as Sir, Only officers are to be addressed as Sir. Any NCO would take offence because as a CSM once told me "I ain't no officer, I work for a living!" I was just waiting for the Master Chief to chew out the marines, but it never happened.... Well just thought I'd vent...Oh and the master chief is a sailor not a marine ergo why his Cmd is the Navy/ONI

If I was a genetically engineered killing machine, I think some one would call me sir just out of fear alone, or because I am their only line of defense against total anihilation

Yes, by today's military rules and regulations a Master Chief is technically not called sir. However, in the Halo universe it seems that any person of a senior rank is referred to as sir and often rendered a salute. (Sgt. Johnson on Metropolis, John117 and CPO Mendez in the books) At the same time salutes are often rendered on the bridge, indoors and uncovered. (Against R & R of present day Navy and Marine Corp. standards) I think Bungie took a foundation of military terminology and turned it into a scrumtrulescent gravy. They then poured this gravy into the story to make it all the more tasty and fulfilling. They can have their fun.

What do you guys think of the paint used on the weapons in halo 2? Just kidding, i could'nt resist.
-
its a video game. period
-
Some of you people read/think TOO much into Halo. Next you'll be discussing if the type of paint used on the human weapons in Halo 2.
-
the only reason for that rank is to put him in command of the spartan unit. the nature of the spartans means just about everyone calls them sir or ma'am because they are 'da sheit' =)

Sir is used to show respect. Hence why waiters at those fancy, expensive, take the money from your pocket restaurwants say 'Sir'', and also butlers, maids, servents in general. While they are forced to do so to a degree, it is also generally a sign of respect =P

Here in Canada anyone who is awarded the Victoria Cross (highest canadian and british Medal) is saluted and called sir by even the highest ranking officers, its just a form of respect. I dunno, maybe the UNSC in the future has something like that.

yer I like animals. This thread should be made sticky. I want to see more animals on Halo 3.
-
trust me, the officer designation as Sir has be used for over 1000 years now and has always been used to address officers/knights/nobility, I doubt it will change, and most likely he does get paid, just has no need for it.

Heh, welll since YOU are the Master Chief it's kinda up to you how you handle it when those jarheads dis you. I know I've told em enough times "I'm not a sir you (insert appropriate insult)!" Heck I even slapped one once and he had the gall to say something like "That was uncalled for sir." I felt like shooting him but then I'd be up on charges so I just gave him the pos smg I had for his BR and made him take point. [Edited on 1/10/2005 10:57:29 AM]

This also takes place 548 years in the future, so anything can happen (and Master Chief doesn't get paid, I don't believe).
