Halo Violates The Laws of Physics

I just finished reading The Cole Protocol (Quite addictive) and one part stood out to me. The part where Captain Keyes and the ODSTs jump into outer space and use their battle rifles to distance themselves from the ship. The author tried to be intelligent and use Newton's Third Law of Physics to support this, however, when one thinks about it, guns would not even work in space at all because there is no atmosphere. Discuss.

Discuss.
Guns fire normally in the vaccum of space, and will propel objects away at an average force of 14psi. And no, don't be scared, I searched that. :)
