Hi all,
Roger here, Bungie's old Halo PC guy from way back when. I've been in touch with Gearbox regarding the exploit currently being abused to make Halo servers unresponsive, and we've identified a fix. Now, I have no idea what the official support status of this game is, and I don't relish the thought of asking our friends at MGS to spin up a new Halo 1 PC support team and get their copy of the source out of whatever underground vault they keep it in. So, since I still have the official build machine under my desk (well, I put it in storage for a while, but yesterday asked our IT team to "unseal the hushed casket"), I made a fixed build and I'm posting it here. Don't take this as any official change in the game's support policy from MS, Bungie, or Gearbox, but when a problem like this comes along, we do want to help out the fans who have kept the game alive for this long.
So here's the plan: The zip I'm posting today has binaries that fix the particular bug in question. It's gotten only minimal testing to verify that it runs and isn't vulnerable. Over the next couple weeks, we'll watch the community feedback and look through the source a little more to see of we see any similar vulnerabilities we should patch at the same time. Then in about a month, I'll assemble a regular auto-patch so that players will get this fixed build automatically. Until then, the old build 1.0.7.0614 will remain live on the autopatcher, and you'll have to get this fix manually from here. The exe will be version stamped at build 0615, but in-game the version string will continue to say 0613 for compatibility reasons.
This patch contains four EXEs: client & dedicated servers for Halo PC and Halo CE. Drop the binaries into the respective game directories. If you provide feedback here, please focus on items related to this exploit fix; we will not be making other changes related to new hardware support, performance, etc.
Since these files are not codesigned, the MD5 hashes are as follows:
Halo PC
5be538321fd40f52ebdea496f3427bec halo.exe
72502a9f922b9dd5413f76cf9f215b16 haloded.exe

Halo CE

The patch is at the following URL:

Gearbox also plans to mirror the patch, I expect that it will be linked from here:

Enjoy!

Many people are actually in fact, that good. Better to just play with friends and others you find around your own skill level.

forgive me guys if i am asking a obvious question, but its been a while since I played halo PC and moved on to newer games. i used to enjoy the online game and met some nice people in the clans XF clan espcially, but it became obvious after a while that most of the people playing the game or at least the game i were in were using enhancements of some kind to win continously. it became very annoying to the point Halo I put the CD away one evening and vowed not to return to the halo servers. my question is has Bungie finally resolved the hacking/aimbot problem with a fix/update? if so maybe I'll see some of you in the servers again. be gentle with me LOL Thanks
Posted by: Frnksnbns It's funny. Back in the 2004-2006 era when Halo PC was full steam ahead we had major problems on un hosted dedicated servers with the direct IP trick tkers were using to quickly reset their tk limit and rejoin a server faster than 3 seconds. A very simply way to fix this would have been for them to tweak the code so that the direct IP address would reset/erase upon exiting a game. Very simply to do I'm sure. Could anyone be bothered? Nah....
The "quick join" that you are referring to does not involve using the direct ip feature that is available when you select "muliplayer" in halo. Instead it involves using the rcon console command "connect". Say if the server ip that you want to connect to is 1.2.3.4:2302 with a pass = b45 , then you would put: " connect 1.2.3.4:2302 b45 " (minus the quotes) into the console. If there is no password, simply put "" as the password. While some ppl do abuse this feature in pubs where tk is on, it is a very useful feature (especially for scrims/ hpts) that shouldn't be removed.

Thanks for the Patch. It's a shame to hear that the Halo bot will stay around. What I do like is the hint you gave us about the game is in your hands now and also the hint about the banlist. Thanks to your statement I have an idea of getting rid of them, THANK YOU! You might be using this all along, but just incase you didn't. For insight to "all known" glitches just search Youtube hope to see them all fixed ;) PS. DON'T YOU DARE TO TOUCH THE HALO's NET CODE !! Leave it like it is :) [Edited on 07.24.2008 10:29 PM PDT]
Posted by: Lucian78 Just a small suggestion for the final update release if theres still time since this seems to be a security patch. Recently some people around the halo boards have been getting paranoid over a "rcon hack" some guy posted on youtube. I think to put their mind at ease, having a 3 unsuccessful attempt limit on rcon like most network secure logins have adopted might put their mind at ease. I figure something similar to kicking the user after 3 rcon attempts would interfere with any amateur programmers trying to crack someones rcon pass in a brute force algorithmic attempt.
Posted by: Lucian78 Thanks to Sawnose for the patch. I dunno if its me or something slipped into the code but I've honestly never seen the shottie look like this while I was playing. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d157/lucian78/newUpdate2.jpg Also for those playing Halo 2 with some "minor mouse twitching." Try putting -novsync in the command line parameters in the shortcut. I had the same problem with a Nvidia 9600 and that helped me ;)
No, that's a normal shotgun. ;)

I don't remember what the original shotty looks like but the only way to change the way it looks is to change the skin located in the bitmaps.map file. Changing the halo.exe or stings.dll doesn't affect the weapons (at least not in a weapon desgin aspect).

Is this going to go up to auto-update anytime soon? And Dennis, I didn't know you had a b.net account.
Posted by: sawnose Here's an interesting stat: There have been 96152 unique Halo PC users in online multiplayer in the past 30 days! (That's the number of unique, legit "yellow sticker" CD keys seen online). This game certainly lives on.
Just for a point of reference the Halo Custom Edition Game has been downloaded from the Halo maps website over 253,484 times since we started tracking it in Jan 2005. (we use FTP so we can track a completed download) There have been 71,610 downloads of the game this year alone. I have no way of telling how much that has impacted the longevity of the Halo PC game but it has been surprising nonetheless -Dennis [Edited on 07.10.2008 8:34 AM PDT]

Does this mean that people can now join servers that they couldn't before, or able to host them?
-
I seem to be having a problem with this--I can't find the directories. It doesn't auto-install either...

Badgeman...Yes you take the new haloded.exe and replace the current one in that folder.

Go back to WoW Igg

*comes in and sees all these Halo PC people* 96,000 active HaloPC accounts *fients*

I have a really, really stupid question here. To properly apply the new update I just download the .zip file and extract it to my MicrosoftGames/Halo folder? What is the correct way? I'm sort of new to this.
Posted by: UrbanSolder000 Hey just a question, I remember playing Halo PC in the old days, but I don't have it anymore. Where can I still get it?
Amazon, Newegg, Target and all those good places :)

It isn't eliminated. Aimbots will just be updated to work with the new version.
