I've been thinking about the etymology of the Chief's armor.
It's called MJOLNIR, for anyone who didn't know. In Norse mythology, Mjolnir is the hammer of Thor. One strike with Mjolnir is enough to vanquish any foe. However, Mjonir isnt armor, its a weapon.
Given the properties of the suit, wouldn't it have been better to call it Megingjord? Megingjord was an enchanted girdle that gave Thor strength and protection.
Does anyone have an idea as to why the armor is called Mjolnir?
(I'm inivting speculation as to how Bungie came up with ideas for their projects. Maybe we will draw unexpected lines between disparate elements of the Bungieverse and find new things.)
Posted by: xSMx Lego i never really knew why it was called that... thanks for letting me know!!! How do you pronounce it?
Its pronounced Emm-Yole-neer, I think. [Edited on 06.26.2008 11:44 AM PDT]

The Chief resembles the Hammer of Thor, the weapon of humanity.

We all know how Bungie have thrown in Greek, Norse and religious mythology into their games, because that stuff is all really interesting to anyone whose talents exceed headbutting tables until they break. However, I don't think there's any real tie-in with the Mjolnir armour being named after a weapon. My opinion: Mjolnir is a fantastic word. Really great to say, and it looks cool. Master Chief is fantastic. Really cool. Let's name his armour Mjolnir, because it sounds as hardcore and cool as he is. EDIT: Also, AcademicL is correct. Myol-near is the most common pronunciation of this word, though muh-yol-neer, myol-ner and other forms are all probably accepted too. [Edited on 06.26.2008 11:26 AM PDT]

The spartan alone inside the armor is the unsc's hammer
-
One strike with Mjolnir would destroy any foe. Can you think of any other examples of a single thing destroying any foe? Those who wear the armor are one-man armies. Enough to take out any foe :)
-
Interesting, never knew any of this.
-
Based on the small amount of time I've spent studying Scandinavian languages such as Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish, I would conjecture that it's "myoll-near."
-
The Spartans were trained to be the UNSC's ultimate weapon against the Covenant, and the thing that makes them more of a weapon than anything is the armour. It's pronounced "Muh-yol-neer". -TGP-
-
Mush-in-ear. I might be wrong on the pronounciation.
-
Mjolnir is the hammer of Thor.
Posted by: Drizzt1138 The link to Thor's hammer is noted. I'm wondering why Bungie decided on that particular designation for the SPARTAN-II armor.
It is potentially a purposeful Marathon tie-in if you ask me. See my above post for further information on this.
Posted by: Balthorg
Reported. And about the Mjolnir, I believe it was named this because the Chiefs armor actually makes him a weapon . So in other words, his armor is a weapon. [Edited on 06.26.2008 11:01 AM PDT by x Foman123 x]

its the hammer of thor,,, a mighty weapon

That elite up there ^^^ knows math! : ) Edit: Guy above me. Bungie used many things taken from history such as Norse mythology, Greek history, and biblical references. They're just mysterious like that. [Edited on 06.26.2008 11:00 AM PDT]

the armour gives him greater reflexes and ups his speed to but its a strong enough armour to be considered a weapon when the armour was tested on a marine he died

Yes, the armor's designation is Mjolnir and yes, you are correct in identifying the tie in to Thor's fabled hammer. The term 'Mjolnir' has been used by Bungie to describe a powered/shieled armor system as far back as the first Marathon game in the early '90s. In the Marathon series, the player is one of ten Mjolnir Mark IV cyborgs (oddly enough, the last remaining one too... anyone see the similarity?). As is stated on the Marathon's Story page:
The log of Bernard Strauss (Marathon's first science director) reveals that the Marathon left Mars carrying ...all of the destructive knowledge of mankind. Ten cyborgs.
Leela reports that ...nine military Mjolnir Mark IV cyborgs were covertly living among the colonists, and acting together they were able to single-handedly turn back the latter stages of the Pfhor assault. More recently, Durandal in the Marathon 2: Durandal (Preview) remarks: Were you ever curious about the tenth cyborg which was supposed to be on the Marathon? Why could Leela find only nine? Was it ever activated? Was it destroyed during the defense of the colony? You are right to be curious.
For the full read, click here. Hope this helps explain a few things as far as the use of the term is concerned. [Edited on 06.26.2008 11:02 AM PDT] -
