Raise your wands if you didn't see this one coming. Okay, that's no-one. Yes, like night following a particularly reliable day, The Elder Scrolls Online is dropping its subscription. Rumors of the switch have been around for a while now, fuelled by the elimination of the six-month subscription option in December, followed by the removal of TESO boxes from EB Games shelves in Australia earlier this month. Now, finally, it's confirmed: Bethesda Softworks has announced that the game's subscription will cease as of March, at which point it will be known as The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.
It won't be fully free-to-play—you'll still have to purchase the game if you want in—but once you own it, you'll be able to play online to your heart's content, with full access to all previously-released updates and content, including the new Champion and Justice systems. Those who already own The Elder Scrolls Online will need to do nothing, as all existing accounts will be automatically updated to the new version.
Dedicated fans will have the option of ponying up for "ESO Plus" memberships. Available in 30, 90, and 180-day durations, these will offer access to all future DLC, which Bethesda said will consist of "game packs with optional adventure content," like zones and quests. Access to these optional areas will be lost if and when your membership expires, but any items or rewards earned from those areas will be kept.
ESO Plus memberships will also provide "character progression bonuses," and an allotment of crowns, the new in-game currency that will be used to purchase "convenience and customization items" like pets and mounts, as well as the aforementioned DLC, which will be available separately from ESO Plus memberships on an a-la-carte basis.
Current TESO subscriptions that extend beyond the changeover will be automatically transitioned to ESO Plus memberships, and TESO players who have previously cancelled their subscriptions can leap back into the subs-free action using their old account info (and will be given 500 complimentary crowns for doing so). Refunds on existing subscriptions will not be offered.
Anyone planning on picking it up on consoles now that the sub has been done away with? Sure there's the ESO Plus membership but thats not really mandatory
Console players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will be able to venture to Tamriel on June 9. These versions will launch with everything available on the PC and Mac, including the Justice and Champion systems that were added post-launch.
8 RepliesWell, obviously lol. Did anyone expect them to charge 60 for the game, as well as a monthly subscription fee, on top of paying for XBL/PSN?
-
1 ReplyHas anyone played it? Should I get excited about it? Better question: will I constantly be hitting pay walls? I find it hard to believe I'll be able to get the "full experience" for $60.
-
I would have bought it even if they hadn't dropped the sub fee. I actually wish they didn't drop the sub fee.
-
I heard it sucks anyways....
-
Ive been playin it on and off since launch. It is so much better than it was and i know ZOS will make it better.
-
Lol there's no way they could have kept the game subscription on top of console subscriptions as well.
-
If my friends get it, yes.
-
Yay! I can finally afford it! It's still not going to be as good as skyrim though...

Edited by Midnightcalm: 1/22/2015 5:16:34 AMIt's a disappointment, subscription would allow them to keep the game fresh and force them to continually update and fix issues. By the looks of it they will hit people with many dlcs, seems to be theme that too many game companies are falling to now. Or like they are doing here pay to win memberships. Should of stuck with subscription. Just put a nail in the coffin for me for that game.

Edited by Wobbly Wombat: 1/22/2015 10:56:52 AMI'm still not sure about this game as it's been hyped to death; not a good sign in my opinion. I hope that in the 18 months since the PC launch the game has improved. I would like to play a trial version first. Ditching the subscription is a good first move.

18 RepliesGlad they dropped subscription, dislike this practice.
-
It's still going to suck.

Edited by CaptKrunch: 1/22/2015 4:55:25 AMI honestly enjoyed my time on PC with it. Similar to Destiny it just lacked endgame content. If you're the type who just wants to explore with no goals, you'll be disappointed as just about everything has a quest tied to it. If you like questing you'll enjoy it because many of the quests are well done and offer choices (although no impact really in terms of end game). My main gripe was the after you finish all the quests in your faction you get sent to the other factions. And you do the exact same quests. So there is no point in making an alt unless you want a different class. You're going to play through all the factions anyway eventually.

1 ReplyThis is what they do. Release on PC, then re-release on console. Makes them a ton of money this way. People may buy it, but it's not a new game. The updates will slow down and space apart. In my opinion, it's a poor MMORPG unworthy of the Elder Scrolls name. A cash grab relying on TES fans to blindly purchase it. Much like Destiny being bought on Bungie's name alone. If you're looking for a multiplayer version of Skyrim: you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for a console MMORPG, with an Elder Scrolls look: go for it. It's your money. (Not my recommendation!)

Still not very interested in it. But I have a higher chance of buying it.
-
Smart move. God knows they needed to do something to give this thing life.
-
Maybe...

1 ReplyInteresting. Might look into it. I'm not exactly sure... doesn't seem like it did very well.

YEAAAAA

1 ReplyAnd not a single person was surprised

Staymad mustard race.
-
I might just consider buying it now.

Edited by TGI Skuldier: 1/21/2015 11:27:26 PMI'll probably finally pick it up. It wasn't worth it before, shit its still not worth it really, but it will give me something to screw around in I suppose. If anything I'll play it at work or something instead of -blam!-ing up wikepedia pages.
-
4 RepliesGoing to pay attention to this game now. If the reviews are solid I will get and love it.
-
I'll probably try it out and see how it is.

2 RepliesEdited by Trad: 1/21/2015 3:35:02 PMCan't say that it really even makes me feel like checking it out now, to be honest. With Guild Wars 2's "expansion" just over the horizon, I can't really say that any other MMO has my full attention. Though I've been considering checking out that Star Wars MMO, I just haven't gotten around to it. I don't know if this is a case of them making this move too late, or just me not being interested after recalling all the negative opinions on it from a while back. I just can't justify sinking time into ESO when others still offer, what I think are, better options.
