The ghosts are the ones that revive dead humans/exos/awoken to become guardians. You're then "Born in light"
One of the hunters had his light sucked out, so did Eris.
Meaning they all had ghosts.

You need Ghosts to re-create the body and revive while you still have your light. It isn't simply to "open doors", as Eris said.
