Why is there a ' in Rat's nest? Because it then means rat is nest or rat has nest which makes no sense. The aprostrophe replaces a letter or part of a word to join them up. So why is it there?
Posted by: Kaiyuss Apostrophes also show ownership. Example: John's house. You put the apostrophe at the end though because rats is plural and it's more than one rat that owns the Rats' Nest. Example: Employees' salary. This refers to the salary earned by all of the employees. Example: Employee's salary. This refers to the salary earned by one employee. That's all the English I can teach for one day. My job is done. Mr. Data, set a course for... home.
lol completly fogot so nvm about this post.

Change the word Rat's with Marine's, the Marine's Nest, giving the 'Nest', which is the military base, a property of being owned by the marines, or 'Rats'. So when you are saying Rat's Nest you are speaking of the nest the rats own.
