Destiny and sexism (and what us guys can do about it)

I've been gaming for a very long time. Over the years, I've noticed two very important things. 1) More and more women are playing video games 2) Gaming is still very much male-centric, and the attitude and actions of male players reinforce this. Listen, I'm not gonna accuse all of you male Destiny players of being "sexist, misogynistic pigs". I don't believe people are intentionally like that. But you have to realize that you may unconsciously hold some, dare I say, sexist attitudes that turn away many females from playing games. Do you only play as male Guardian? If you don't, great! You're making Destiny, and gaming in general, a welcome, safe, and inclusive space for women. However, if you do only play as male Guardians, then that can be indicative of some very negative attitudes, attitudes from when gaming was (and still is, to an extent) a boy's club. That needs to change. So, I encourage every man out there to make a female Guardian, to show solidarity with all of the gals playing Destiny. If you don't have an empty character slot, delete one of your male characters and start anew!

  • Since someone felt the need to revive this dumb thing I'll just do a repost of what I said last time
This is dumb. Not because you are promoting equal sex (which is great) but because you think making a female character is going to do something. When I play with someone in PvE or PvP i don't care what gender their model is because I only care if they can pull their weight or enhance my gaming experience. No cares what gender other people pick because it doesn't change gameplay one iota. What's next? Get everyone to make a black character to support racial equality? Because let me tell you as an African-American that there are better ways to make an impact on any part of culture. This just seems like you wrote this to let yourself ride a high-horse or something, because while there are sexist problems in gaming, making a female character ain't gonna change any of it. Your idea comes from a good place but in practice is completely stupid.
• I won't make female Guardians, always seems werid to me to be male, and play as female, but showing respect to all gamers, male or female, is something I've practiced. An a-hole is an a-hole, no matter the sex.

    • my responses: 1. Good for them but I'll still show no quarter, if equality is what they seek, equality is what they shall receive. 2. Yes gaming is male centric, so is model railroading or whatever it is other guys are into, it doesn't mean that women aren't allowed to join. I have two male characters and one female, not because of solidarity but because I want to try all three classes. I'm considering deleting the hunter and warlock simply because I like my titan and most if not all of my playtime and work in game is on him. If women wish to be treated better then let them state it themselves instead of letting you parade them around as victims. Equality is a joke and will never truly exist, somebody will always want to have more over others.

    • It's pretty funny that you want everyone to not play as male gamers because you think that we are creating an unwelcoming environment to women. By that logic, all you women should play as men because us men feel like we're being left out in all these groups of girls :( No. -_____- If I want to play as a man I'll play as a man because that's what I want to do, besides, men can be stronger than women, and if I want someone pulling me out of a firezone it better damn we'll be someone who's capable, and that 99/100 times isnt a woman. That's why women couldn't do SpecOps for a really long time, because they aren't able to be put to the physical limits of men, that's why all the military physical qualifying tests have lowered reqs for women, because they simply can't be as good. /rant

      • Let me guess, you have a hyphenated name and you wear skinny pants. I chose male characters because I am a male and have no desire to pretend otherwise. For those of you that do play as female characters, you may have some serious tranny issues. Or your just a horny teenager.
Do you only play as male Guardian? If you don't, great! Girl gamers aren't as fragile as you make them out to be. The ones I have played with could give 2 shits about what gender the character we use . They just want to kill, talk some trash and have fun like anybody. If anyone is being sexist its you ya half a vagina closet tranny.

            • Huh? I create characters I want to use. I feel I can relate more to a male character since I am one as well. I don't understand what creating a female character would do good or bad for the gaming community in general. I don't have anything against female gamers and would welcome them joining in with our fireteam. Currently I've only ever had the opportunity to play with males in Destiny (that I know of). The only female characters I've seen have belonged to male gamers. I have 3 characters, all leveled up to 32, and if you think I'm going to trash one of them to create a female character you are smoking some pretty good weed. If you want to create a female character, good for you, make as many as you want, but you and your values are not going to dictate how I choose to play.

The less metal female heavy armor has, the higher armor rating it has. Nothing wrong with that. I like eye candy. Would you like that all game heroes look like Jack Black in hangover, or Roseanne Barr?
Now that I actually think about this, I would play toon that looks like Jack...
Edit; I switch between game toon genders based on wich has better (more natural movement) animations.

              • I understand that your intentions are well placed, but I think you could suggest better ways to increase inclusiveness in the gaming community. Better ways that guys could make gaming more welcoming to women would include things such as refusing to make r-pe jokes or use the word r-pe casually (because seriously guys, throwing that word around can bring up seriously traumatic memories for victims of sexual assault--this applies for male victims too) or using references to women's bodies as insults (i.e. "don't be such a pussy"). A little thoughtfulness can go a long way to making others feel comfortable and enjoy the game they're playing--this isn't some abstract consideration of "political correctness." Besides, saying that shit isn't even remotely funny. Changing the gender of your character won't do much to change sexist behavior. Besides, as many people have said here, your character is often a reflection of yourself, so it makes little sense to change that. However, having a discussion about sexism in gaming spaces is sorely needed, and unfortunately stubbornly resisted by people with the maturity level of prepubescent toddlers.
