I was just watching Cinematech on TechTV, and it said Oni was by Rockstar Games. Any comments or explanations?
Posted by: Liton Actually, Bungie used to be a company who worked for rockstar, than they made oni, then microsoft bought them, before they made the ps2 version of halo (cell shaded and a RTS). thank you microsoft, your decision saved halo.
Interesting, and almost completely wrong. [*]Bungie used to be a company who worked for Rockstar
Although Oni was designed and created by Bungie, it was actually sold as a trademarked property to Take 2 Games - who once owned a share in Bungie, before we were acquired by Microsoft. Bungie passed on both the Myth and Oni franchises to Take 2 when Microsoft acquired the company.
Take 2 wholly owns Rockstar and once had a 19.9% stake in Bungie. Never did Bungie "work for" Rockstar. [*]Then they made Oni, then Microsoft purchased them As part of the Acquisition Q/A
Oni will be finished by the Bungie West team in their San Jose office and tested by Bungie's QA manager and his team. The game will then be published, distributed and supported by Gathering of Developers for Mac and Windows, and by Rockstar Games for the PlayStation2. It will ship for PC, Mac and the PlayStation2. After the game ships, the Oni team will relocate to Seattle to join the rest of the Bungie staff and start work on their next project.
Microsoft purchased Bungie while Oni was still in development. Part of the "deal" was that Take Two's subsidiaries (mentioned above) would publish the title and Take Two would then own it. [*]Before they made the PS2 version of Halo (cell shared and a RTS) The original ideas for Halo (codename Blam) was that it would be a futuristic "Myth-like" game, also known as a RTT (Real Time Tactical). I never recall it ever being developed as a cell-shaded game (recently fashionable for games) and it was intended for Macs and PC's. I even recall a quote along the lines of "we tried getting it to run on a PS/2, it just couldn't." Did MS "save" Halo? I couldn't say. The acquisition definitely made it much more widely available to a far larger audience than any previous Bungie title. Beyond that, I would only be guessing.
