I’d like to start by saying I am a massive fan of Destiny. I can’t think of many, if any days I’ve missed playing it since it was released. I’m still chasing after Ice Breaker and Hawkmoon and I think that just having these two exotics in my collection would make the game slightly more fun to play for me.
Like many people, one thing I’m not a fan of is the RNG. I don’t like the idea that I can invest a lot of time and effort into something and the ability to get the most out of the game is not in my control. Someone could get lucky and get exactly what they want with little effort, while others could play for 100s + hours and still be chasing that elusive exotic.
That being said I don’t think that the amount of hours required to grind every aspect of the game, is relative to the rewards you receive at the end. It shouldn’t be the case that you have to be able to play for 10 hours a day to enjoy the game. A lot of people argue if you think Destiny is bad then you should play…which doesn’t make sense to me, I’m playing Destiny not another game. You wouldn’t argue the fact its repetitive by telling someone to play Minesweeper. Even if this was a relevant argument, just because other games do it, doesn’t justify it. If a load of games come out which require you to poke yourself in the eye for every 5 minutes of gameplay, it wouldn’t make me think it was a good idea.
I like the idea that potentially anytime I decide to play I could get a random drop of something amazing, but this is much more of an idea than a reality. I know everyone moans about RNG hating them and that’s not what I’m saying. I have had some really good luck and guns, but when you’re only after one or two it makes it a lot less likely that I’m going to get what I want.
It’s been said so many times before, but a trading system would make such an improvement to a lot of gamers enjoyably in the game. Nearly everyone I speak to has guns I would like and I even have some they would want. When you finish the VOG and get your third Last Word (a gun I never use) and someone who would kill for the same gun gets nothing, it makes me think even more that what I’m after is out of my reach. With the exotic drop rate so low, does this reward mean now there’s statistically even less chance of me getting what I want?!
I don’t want to jump on the band wagon and rant against Bungie, because I am still a fan of Bungie as well as Destiny. However I am starting to wonder what reason they have for certain aspects of the game other than to keep people playing whether they’re enjoying it or not. My OCD keeps me playing because of the clever way the dailies/weeklies etc are designed, but the additional grinding required since the DLC is having the opposite effect on my play time, to the one I expected. It is getting to the stage where I’m only after a couple of guns which would keep my happy, but I’m starting to give up on the hope that I’ll ever get these.
After having a quick go on Halo it reminded me what it’s like to see an enemy with a gun you want, kill him, then be able to pick up the gun and use it. I understand that Destiny is a different style of game, but I think I put in more than enough game time to be able to get the most out of that experience.
Edit – Thanks for all of the comments. I’m pleased to see that most people have understood where I’m coming from. I’m not saying I hate the game, or I’ve had enough and won’t be playing again (who cares). It was a genuine question, because I play so much but I’m starting to get fed up with fact every time I play its to grind for something. I love the fact that anytime I play there is the potential for me to be rewarded with something amazing, but the same could be said for playing the lottery. Sure there’s a chance you could win, but not a very big one.
Edit #2 - One possibility is the same method of random rewards, but instead of getting the actual exotic, you get an exotic token. You then take this token to Xur along with some strange coins and buy whatever exotic you want with it. They could make it so it’s a fair amount of coins required as you get to pick your exotic, but that way they would still be less common, because you’ve had to wait for the RNG, but people wouldn’t end up with three of the same gun and not the one they want. I know this will never happen, because it will reduce the amount of time people are required to play the game.
Edit #3 - Thanks for all of the replies (even the people who think I’m an idiot). To all of the people saying that this is what MMOs are, I don’t agree that is as a valid argument for grinding so much. Just because something is done a certain way doesn’t make it the best or only way, if everyone thought like that we’d still be walking everywhere, but someone invented the car…I thought Destiny was supposed to be a game like no other which redefined gaming.

1 ReplyEdited by ToPocHi: 1/6/2015 5:10:02 PMThe game becomes a chore because everyone is loot-driven. And they spend hours and hours on end in hopes to acquire them. People forget easily that the core game is shooting baddies and embodying the epitome of badassery. That said, you already are one the moment you pick that Khvostov up and tear through the Fallen like they were nothing. The game feels fun for me still because I play sparingly and everytime I do, my personal goal is to simply not die, ever. Getting sweet loot is always icing on the cake for me.

1 ReplyI chose not to refarm. I will continue once House of Wolves is out so I know my progress won't be set back again. Until then ill be running nightfall and goofing around with patrols or crucible.

5 RepliesBlah blah blah... I don't need to read a book to know why you do it. I don't care. Do what you do, and I'll do what I do. People don't see eye to eye all the time, they're not meant to, it's called balance and everyone plays their part, whether they cheese it or not. Agree to disagree.

1 ReplyBecause it's fuggin' fun.

1 ReplyIf you want people to actually read what you have to say, don't write posts that have 20.000 words in them.
-
3 RepliesRNG is Bungie's way to extend the life of Destiny. They know people will grind until they get the item they want.

1 ReplyWhat else would you do with your time.....

1 Reply"I’d like to start by saying I am a massive fan of Destiny" Another one of this threads, guess what it's an MMO, grinding is part of the deal, and in most MMO you don't even get gear, you have to build it from scratch. Learn to grind instead of asking for ways to eliminate it, because if that's what you want, then you don't know how MMO work at all.

1 ReplyIt's a grind. But shooting aliens' head off and blowing them up is just too damn fun. And the anticipation that comes after every crucible match, strike or faction level up just keeps me playing. I want that shiny new item and I want to max that shiny new item so what else can you do?

Bump!

3 RepliesI feel like the grind is tedious and unrewarding. You can grind out the same strikes over and over again for 30 hours and come out with 2 shards for your trouble. The grind is too much for so little content.

1 Replyafter a long day on my feet I like to come home and shoot shit. Sometimes it's GTA, most days it's Destiny. rng pisses me off but sometimes i love it, especially lately, as my drops are much better than before. any good game worth playing has a grind to it. personal goals are what keep most of us playing. all games are repetive in one aspect or another.

11 RepliesThe reason "other games do it" is a valid argument is that it shows that the concept works and is successful. The poking yourself in the eye analogy is rather asinine because it's something that isn't being done because it doesn't work. While I am not a fan of how much this game boils down to RNG, I do not support trading. I would ruin the game by making thing too accessible. If someone wanted my rd Last Word and I wanted someone's Fatebringer then we could arrange a trade. That seems all good and all except now I have one less reason to do VoG. Nevermind all the other problems it would result in because you probably didn't even consider those thing. All you're concerned with is what changes would make the game better for YOU..

1 ReplyBecause...it's kind of fun. After a long arduous day of work I'll take mindless missions for a little while.
-
3 RepliesIn other games you can get the games proclaimed best gear, hit max level and beat the strongest boss to end the game. The endless grind gives the player a sense of purpose for their character. Albeit an annoying sense of purpose, but nonetheless purpose.
-
3 RepliesBecause some of us actually like the game. And the grind is part of the game. And we don't really care because it is a great game
-
5 RepliesBecause some of us find it fun. We realize that the only thing we are "acomplishing" is HAVING FUN...and the "grind" gives us something to work TOWARDS.

4 RepliesSome people like the grind, what's good for you may not be what's good for others. If you don't like it don't play.

8 RepliesBungie signed with activision (the devil). Said company is large and has a responsibility to many shareholders. They fulfill that responsibility by creating a game model which is addictive (grind, buy dlc, grind buy next dlc...) in which u essentially are the rabbit chasing the carrot, every time u get close they move the carrot. I would wager a lot of people dont really enjoy the game, they are just continuing ti feed into their addiction. I was like that during vault of glass, but i havent been playing it much anymore. Sadly bungie is not alone in this. Pretty much every big game nowadays is about grinding to some degree. Sunset overdrive, use your guns to kill enemies over and over and over to level them up. Farcry 4, do repetitive grinding small missions to get money to buy new guns (though they are more fun than destiny bounties). I wonder if they had an mri machine scanning your brain while you're playing, if the same area of your brain that is triggered by sugar, cocaine, etc would light up...
