Why do people defend the endless grinding?

I’d like to start by saying I am a massive fan of Destiny. I can’t think of many, if any days I’ve missed playing it since it was released. I’m still chasing after Ice Breaker and Hawkmoon and I think that just having these two exotics in my collection would make the game slightly more fun to play for me. Like many people, one thing I’m not a fan of is the RNG. I don’t like the idea that I can invest a lot of time and effort into something and the ability to get the most out of the game is not in my control. Someone could get lucky and get exactly what they want with little effort, while others could play for 100s + hours and still be chasing that elusive exotic. That being said I don’t think that the amount of hours required to grind every aspect of the game, is relative to the rewards you receive at the end. It shouldn’t be the case that you have to be able to play for 10 hours a day to enjoy the game. A lot of people argue if you think Destiny is bad then you should play…which doesn’t make sense to me, I’m playing Destiny not another game. You wouldn’t argue the fact its repetitive by telling someone to play Minesweeper. Even if this was a relevant argument, just because other games do it, doesn’t justify it. If a load of games come out which require you to poke yourself in the eye for every 5 minutes of gameplay, it wouldn’t make me think it was a good idea. I like the idea that potentially anytime I decide to play I could get a random drop of something amazing, but this is much more of an idea than a reality. I know everyone moans about RNG hating them and that’s not what I’m saying. I have had some really good luck and guns, but when you’re only after one or two it makes it a lot less likely that I’m going to get what I want. It’s been said so many times before, but a trading system would make such an improvement to a lot of gamers enjoyably in the game. Nearly everyone I speak to has guns I would like and I even have some they would want. When you finish the VOG and get your third Last Word (a gun I never use) and someone who would kill for the same gun gets nothing, it makes me think even more that what I’m after is out of my reach. With the exotic drop rate so low, does this reward mean now there’s statistically even less chance of me getting what I want?! I don’t want to jump on the band wagon and rant against Bungie, because I am still a fan of Bungie as well as Destiny. However I am starting to wonder what reason they have for certain aspects of the game other than to keep people playing whether they’re enjoying it or not. My OCD keeps me playing because of the clever way the dailies/weeklies etc are designed, but the additional grinding required since the DLC is having the opposite effect on my play time, to the one I expected. It is getting to the stage where I’m only after a couple of guns which would keep my happy, but I’m starting to give up on the hope that I’ll ever get these. After having a quick go on Halo it reminded me what it’s like to see an enemy with a gun you want, kill him, then be able to pick up the gun and use it. I understand that Destiny is a different style of game, but I think I put in more than enough game time to be able to get the most out of that experience. Edit – Thanks for all of the comments. I’m pleased to see that most people have understood where I’m coming from. I’m not saying I hate the game, or I’ve had enough and won’t be playing again (who cares). It was a genuine question, because I play so much but I’m starting to get fed up with fact every time I play its to grind for something. I love the fact that anytime I play there is the potential for me to be rewarded with something amazing, but the same could be said for playing the lottery. Sure there’s a chance you could win, but not a very big one. Edit #2 - One possibility is the same method of random rewards, but instead of getting the actual exotic, you get an exotic token. You then take this token to Xur along with some strange coins and buy whatever exotic you want with it. They could make it so it’s a fair amount of coins required as you get to pick your exotic, but that way they would still be less common, because you’ve had to wait for the RNG, but people wouldn’t end up with three of the same gun and not the one they want. I know this will never happen, because it will reduce the amount of time people are required to play the game. Edit #3 - Thanks for all of the replies (even the people who think I’m an idiot). To all of the people saying that this is what MMOs are, I don’t agree that is as a valid argument for grinding so much. Just because something is done a certain way doesn’t make it the best or only way, if everyone thought like that we’d still be walking everywhere, but someone invented the car…I thought Destiny was supposed to be a game like no other which redefined gaming.

  • I don't think anyone likes mindless grinding but if that's what it takes to possibly get what you want, what other choice do you have?

    • We're masochistic. Everyone who ever loved diablo, dungeon siege, borderlands, or any other dungeon crawling arpg loves the grind and rng system. Although I don't like Destiny's as much because there's so little in the game. The raids save it imo.

          • I can see both sides of the story it is very boring for a lot of people and I understand why they are annoyed but also I can see why there is so much grinding day there wasn't the grinding or the constant upgrades of gear you would then be bored I've seen posts by level 32s saying in 32 got all exotics and guns etcetc what do I do now? They have literally nothing left to do -.-

            • The OCD part...it's more than that. This game has very cleverly been designed to keep you constantly playing it. To keep you addicted. First you will farm Vanguard rep and marks. It feels tedious but you only later realize that this is pretty much the only reward system that awards you according to the effort you make. Then soon you start praying to RNGesus. First for VoG dropping that raid armor, which it didn't. Even if you have all that, there is that elusive hunt for Ascentant Shards. There is a bit of a constant income with VoG and you can boost it with dailies, but it's still a grind. The you grind the HM VoG for the top tier weapons or that raid helm. The drop-rate is still super low and you most likely will not get what you want. Somewhere in this process you realize that you can do more stuff every week with 3 characters. Unless you are that guy with 3 chars of the same class and one set or armour and weapon, this means that you pretty much do everything 3 times as much, inlcuding bounties to upgrade all that and 3x as many shards needed. Then you want to upgrade all your weapons. The exotics are especially demanding as they all seem worth it, but they take longest and you can only do one at a time. When done upgrading one, you rarely even touch it again because you need to upgrade all these other guns and you can only use on at a time anyway. Then you do Nightfalls, hoping for some elusive items, but you never get them. THEN the DLC arrives. All your work so far is rendered useless AND you get a new raid you have to do every week. YOu also need to start ranking up a new vendor, since she is your ticket to levelling up faster. At one point you are a level 32 with most of the best guns in the game. Yet you still feel that you need some other guns AND that you need to upgrade them. ...and there is still Hardmode CE and next DLCs to come to make you start over in a sense.

                  • People defend it because they need to justify wasting those countless hours on something that is completely broken. You get them to admit it is a waste of time and their whole delusion is destroyed and they dont want that.

everyone has different tastes. some people grind because they enjoy the mindless ease of it. personally, i do like grinding, but when you get something out of it. grind for that one gear piece that allows you to raid better. grind for that one sparrow that allows you to travel faster. i like the idea of being rewarded for time. in this game i feel like the grind is boring and unjustified. the difference between a hamster wheel and a merry-go-round. i feel like i hop on this game to complete a chore, not work toward a goal and enjoy the process. WoW had a fantastic grind. i enjoyed that for so long. grinding rep for faction rewards like mounts and crafting patterns. getting achievements for them. every daily was so different, in a different zone, with a different story to it. i never found it was a chore. i would end up doing the same dailies every day for weeks. months. but it never felt like "ok, this sucks. why am i even doing this.." there was always a clear goal in sight. the problem with this game is that there is so little story and such a lack of vast, unique experience, that it does feel like a hamster wheel. even the bounties, though they may be different every day, all feel the same. kill 30 guys with melee attacks, kill 100 guys with precision damage, complete a strike without dying, etc. basically, i have to run through a strike or a patrol, kill a bunch of dudes, and that's the end of that. not much of a story or much excitement to that. and all for what? level up a new piece of gear that i'll use for a month or two before it is replaced? this game seems to want to be an MMO in some regards, without putting in the effort that makes an MMO successful. the big open world shared by hundreds of players, unique experiences everywhere you go, lots of different things to do and see. this game is really just "here's a raid, farm it for a few months, cross fingers for drops, level drops with the same bounties, replace raid with a new one, repeat for the next 10 years". is that it? am i going to be killing droves of thrall in the dark beyond mission with a fusion rifle for xp in 5 years from now? is this what they want the legacy of their game to be?

You'll get everything you want and stop playing the game since you got what you wanted, and they want you to keep playing for the ONE chance. Lol just saw the end of your edit #2. You're right, they'll never make that happen. A grind is a grind, and a trading system would ruin a game based on chance/luck and grind. There's not that many weapon/armor variety to establish a trade or marketplace. The Light system is what our levels after 20 depends on, and unless you have the ability to split them down into mods and parts that uses a " build your Armor spec using mods" system, a slim variety of armor/weapons that has preset max stat then limits you to use the best one available. But -blam!- your needs lol I don't want to trade any of my weapons to get one I want, you get it when you do. we all suck RnGesus titty and just pray he didn't drink the night before haha

I played for the first time in weeks last night. It's not fun anymore. Too many currencies and artificial bottlenecks. Even when you get the guns you want, you need to grind like a bastard to level them and then use them for the same levels you've been playing for months. Let's count the currencies and potential bottlenecks... Glimmer, xp, ascendant shards, ascendant energy, radiant shards, radiant energy, exotic shards, marks, local materials, commendations. Oh, and strange coins and motes, but I won't count them in the total, but they are currencies nonetheless. That is TEN currencies or potential bottlenecks to progress. You need one or some of the above to level gear that you procured through the rng and then did bounties to open the upgrade slots to begin with...GRIND ON GUARDIANS! I never want to do another bounty again.

You're hooked on this hamster wheel of a game. Cough up $20 for 3 missions that don't even add up to an hour of content? Of course I will! I can't stop! The game becomes a chore because everyone is loot-driven. And they spend hours and hours on end in hopes to acquire them. People forget easily that the core game is shooting baddies and embodying the epitome of badassery. That said, you already are one the moment you pick that Khvostov up and tear through the Fallen like they were nothing. The game feels fun for me still because I play sparingly and everytime I do, my personal goal is to simply not die, ever. Getting sweet loot is always icing on the cake for me.
