Why do people defend the endless grinding?

I’d like to start by saying I am a massive fan of Destiny. I can’t think of many, if any days I’ve missed playing it since it was released. I’m still chasing after Ice Breaker and Hawkmoon and I think that just having these two exotics in my collection would make the game slightly more fun to play for me. Like many people, one thing I’m not a fan of is the RNG. I don’t like the idea that I can invest a lot of time and effort into something and the ability to get the most out of the game is not in my control. Someone could get lucky and get exactly what they want with little effort, while others could play for 100s + hours and still be chasing that elusive exotic. That being said I don’t think that the amount of hours required to grind every aspect of the game, is relative to the rewards you receive at the end. It shouldn’t be the case that you have to be able to play for 10 hours a day to enjoy the game. A lot of people argue if you think Destiny is bad then you should play…which doesn’t make sense to me, I’m playing Destiny not another game. You wouldn’t argue the fact its repetitive by telling someone to play Minesweeper. Even if this was a relevant argument, just because other games do it, doesn’t justify it. If a load of games come out which require you to poke yourself in the eye for every 5 minutes of gameplay, it wouldn’t make me think it was a good idea. I like the idea that potentially anytime I decide to play I could get a random drop of something amazing, but this is much more of an idea than a reality. I know everyone moans about RNG hating them and that’s not what I’m saying. I have had some really good luck and guns, but when you’re only after one or two it makes it a lot less likely that I’m going to get what I want. It’s been said so many times before, but a trading system would make such an improvement to a lot of gamers enjoyably in the game. Nearly everyone I speak to has guns I would like and I even have some they would want. When you finish the VOG and get your third Last Word (a gun I never use) and someone who would kill for the same gun gets nothing, it makes me think even more that what I’m after is out of my reach. With the exotic drop rate so low, does this reward mean now there’s statistically even less chance of me getting what I want?! I don’t want to jump on the band wagon and rant against Bungie, because I am still a fan of Bungie as well as Destiny. However I am starting to wonder what reason they have for certain aspects of the game other than to keep people playing whether they’re enjoying it or not. My OCD keeps me playing because of the clever way the dailies/weeklies etc are designed, but the additional grinding required since the DLC is having the opposite effect on my play time, to the one I expected. It is getting to the stage where I’m only after a couple of guns which would keep my happy, but I’m starting to give up on the hope that I’ll ever get these. After having a quick go on Halo it reminded me what it’s like to see an enemy with a gun you want, kill him, then be able to pick up the gun and use it. I understand that Destiny is a different style of game, but I think I put in more than enough game time to be able to get the most out of that experience. Edit – Thanks for all of the comments. I’m pleased to see that most people have understood where I’m coming from. I’m not saying I hate the game, or I’ve had enough and won’t be playing again (who cares). It was a genuine question, because I play so much but I’m starting to get fed up with fact every time I play its to grind for something. I love the fact that anytime I play there is the potential for me to be rewarded with something amazing, but the same could be said for playing the lottery. Sure there’s a chance you could win, but not a very big one. Edit #2 - One possibility is the same method of random rewards, but instead of getting the actual exotic, you get an exotic token. You then take this token to Xur along with some strange coins and buy whatever exotic you want with it. They could make it so it’s a fair amount of coins required as you get to pick your exotic, but that way they would still be less common, because you’ve had to wait for the RNG, but people wouldn’t end up with three of the same gun and not the one they want. I know this will never happen, because it will reduce the amount of time people are required to play the game. Edit #3 - Thanks for all of the replies (even the people who think I’m an idiot). To all of the people saying that this is what MMOs are, I don’t agree that is as a valid argument for grinding so much. Just because something is done a certain way doesn’t make it the best or only way, if everyone thought like that we’d still be walking everywhere, but someone invented the car…I thought Destiny was supposed to be a game like no other which redefined gaming.

  • Hmm. I would much rather mindlessly grind in this game than actually read through this great wall of text you dropped.

      • there is one point I wanted to make in response of all the people saying grind is essential to MMo's. You are right. I have played runescape for nearly 10 years until i stopped playing a couple of years ago. That game was like the walhalla of grinding. The game was grinding. When I played there were about 24 skills if i'm not mistaken. Each one of those skills took on average 100-150 hours. I mean leveling up every skill all the way was just out of reach for most players. After 10 years of actively playing I only had about 15 skills levels up all the way. However, the system was linear. You could easily know in advance how long it would take for each skill, how much it would cost for each skill etc. And once you were done, you were done. After cutting down 150.000 trees you were level 99 woodcutting period. After fletching 300k bows you were 99 fletching. After creating 10.000 titans, you were lvl 99 summoning. Imagine the following. you spent 150hours leveling up woodcutting all the way (and by the way, believe me when I say it's the most mind numbing thing in the world) and the game decides that you won't reach lvl 99 this time, try it all over again. This is how destiny works. When you grind, there is a chance of you getting why you want. In other MMo's when you grind, you know you'll get what you want and you know how much longer it'll take. Some may ask, yes but what about loot ? The same principle applies. You can either go kill the boss and get lucky. Or, you can choose to do it the linear way by grinding guaranteed money making methods (in RS it was killing dragons for their bones). If you wanted an item that cost 100mil, you could either do the boss and hope to get it within an hour, but you could just aswel never get it, or, you could grind guaranteed methods such as killing dragons for 5mil an hour and spend 20 hours doing it. In the end however, you know you are guaranteed the item and you know at the start what it's gonna take. point being, Destiny desperately needs a linear way to get the items you want

        • If you start a trading or token system then everybody would end up with what they want and many would stop playing until the next dlc releases. RNG keeps players coming back in hopes of getting that item. Some give up anyway. But the RNG is what keeps them online. The excitement of "yes! I finally got it!" moment.

            • Borderlands had it right. Each boss had a chance to drop a specific weapon. It was still RNG based so you weren't guaranteed to get it, but you knew where to go get it. I also didn't have to wait a week to grind terrimorpheous again. I think that is the biggest problem with this game. You should be able to do the raids as many times as you want and get rewarded as such. I would actually be playing more if I was able to grind raids anytime I want instead of once a week. I do them once, get shit rewards, get pissed off, and don't play the rest of the week. Seems to me that limiting the players play time hinders the full potential of this game.

              • They need to just make an economy for destiny and let the player have 1 main currency. Reduce drop rates of items and go from there.

If you didn't miss any days , you would have icebreaker as Xur sold it.

                  • I guess I can call it grind because I play and do the bounties, raids, weeklies and nightfalls. I quit trying to chase and "earn" everything because it is random. Now I play just to have fun and play with friends which keeps it interesting. Its a good game that needs some major work in the content area but, with a good clan or group, it can still be loads of fun. I don't necessarily defend it but, if you want something RNG makes you have to grind for it.

Well Im thinking about never grinding again. Im at 30 for two chars. 26 for warlock. Anyway after realising that DLC will comeout again, i'll just buy crucible gear this time. f-u-c-k the strike/raid grind. As for defending the grind... People make emotional investments in games, so of course they're going to rationalise why Destiny is so awesome because they've spent a massive amount of time on it. Even I justified playing Destiny every day for 5 plus hours minimum. I cant anymore. Life is short.

                            • an idea from another thread: However, the issue is not pvp, the issue is the loot system in general. There should be a fixed, linear way to get exotics. For example, every time you win a crucible match, or every time you complete a vanguard strike you get a token. Once you reach hundred tokens you can either buy an exotic of your choice, or buy a totem that will guarantee, that next time an exotic drops, it is the one you chose. In its current state, the rng system is broken. There is nothing more frustrating than hoping for a certain weapon, and getting the same exotic weapon you already have drop over, and over and over again. For example, I want a hawk moon, yet i've already received three monte carlo's. The system with totems would fix this issue. To all of you who are going to say "you've never played an mom before, rng is inherent to them". I have actually, i've extensively played mmo's over the past 12 years. While rng indeed plays a large role in those mom's, there are countering factors that make the rng system fair. For one, usually boss kills don't take nearly as long as a strike. While in both a classic mmo and destiny the odds of getting a good drop may be at 1%, in destiny a strike takes approx 10mins, while you'd be hard pressed to find a boss fight that takes 10 mins in a mmo. And boss fights that do take as long usually have better drop rates. Secondly, when you get a weapon or piece of armor you already have, you can sell it. Which means if you get something rare you're happy, even if you already have it, cause you can just sell it and buy what you want with it. Thirdly, in mom's there is usually a way to get good gear while negating rng for a large part via tokens etc

If everything was just like "do this mission and get this reward" it would be real boring. You have enough games like that and once you have everything the game sucks.
