PvE Blade Dancer Questions.

Let me start off by saying that I've been playing Hunter since launch, and have been through both raids, so I understand quite a bit about the game. I just come here today looking for some clarification and advice on how to properly use Blade Dancer when it comes to PvE play. Also, let's neglect Crota's End from the conversation because we're all aware of the advantages to using invisibility to get through a large portion of it. All that being said, I'm at a constant struggle as to which subclass I prefer. This is because I do love playing Gunslinger most of the time, but find the survivability lacking as it's the only subclass with no health regen talent.. of course making me want to go back to Blade Dancer. So I swap over, but find that through strikes I generate FAR less orbs for my team, and generally miss having the amazing bonuses of Chain of Woe and Gunslinger's Trance that basically turn any weapon into pure gold. To give you an idea - the new Black Garden strike with an abundance of Vex Majors, I would only generate TWO ORBS per kill if I could actually manage it with Arc Blade.. but Golden Gun.. DOUBLE THAT. So what gives, Hunters? Obviously people use both subclasses for all sorts of things, but is our class really pigeon-holed into Gunslinger PvE and Blade Dancer PvP? Gunslinger is still fun in PvP for sure, but Blade Dancer doesn't seem to be as immediately able to swap it's style of play to the PvE side. I still can lead my team in kills, the survival is better because of blink strike healing.. but my Super feels so useless! Also I don't want to hear about invisibility being used to go resurrect a teammate because that's the same concept as people being upset with Sunsingers for sitting on their Supers until they've died to use it. Not to mention going invis to bring someone back doesn't also end in me getting to grenade spam. No orbs for the team, no extra kills for me, literally just an invisible medic. Ugh. All in all I can succeed with both subclasses in both areas, it's just that unlike when I play my Warlock, the Hunter seems to have distinctly better performance with one subclass in PvP and the other PvE. Any tips, tricks, play styles, or builds that people use to rock Blade Dancer effectively in PvE? Edit: Thank you for all the input so far, Hunters! I'm going to try switching around my build a little bit to see if I can improve upon my usefulness to my team at least in terms of orb generation and higher kill counts with my Super. The big tip would be instead of Fast Twitch + Hungering Blade, to go for Escape Artist (+Shadowjack) + Encore. I didn't consider such a use of stealth before as valuable as healing, but since Hungering Blade requires a kill to heal yourself it definitely can backfire in a pinch. I will most likely pass on the suggestions for Alpha Lupi or Lucky Raspberry though. From what I understand Alpha really only improves orb generation by a small margin so I'd rather not give up Don't Touch Me or Mask of the Third Man for it, and where I do agree that the arcbolt grenade is the best for PvE, I'm not totally sold on the chest piece to improve it. Mostly because with Don't Touch Me perks you'll have more Super regen from enemy kills AND this being paired with having a legendary helm for more Super energy from grenade kills means you should have your Super up so often that it's utterly ridiculous. The argument then becomes which would be preferred - More orbs from Supers less often or Supers more often just with fewer orbs per use.. and I choose the latter. I still think that Gunslinger is going to be more useful in most PvE situations, but it's nice to challenge ourselves, and when I still end up at the top of the kill count it feels damn good. Edit 2: Can't wait to get home today and try out some of these new combos of abilities! Keep any further input and ideas coming, Hunters! I'm sure there are more players out there beside myself who are looking for ways to improve. Many on this forum think Hunters are the noob class, but clearly it takes going that extra mile for us to shine as brightly beyond just a kill count, so bring on the challenge! Edit 3: If one more person tells me to just go with stealth to be able to revive teammates I'm going to just mute them. Read the post please. Stealth on Arc Blade is NOT what I'm going for here. I do NOT want to hold onto my Super JUST IN CASE I need to go revive a fallen teammate. NO, just NO. Also, it would be useful if people read the full post before commenting because then they would realize this already. Thanks for your input, but sorry, I get frustrated when people don't read and waste all of our time. Edit 4: Tested tonight and Escape Artist + Shadow Jack + Encore are definitely the way to go. Almost impossible to die when you can just melee anything near you and have 6+ seconds to escape and reposition. Encore and Mask of the Third Man together keep Arc Blade going long enough that I can definitely manage to put down 3-4 orbs for my team as well which is not at all bad. Much thanks to the helpful Hunters in my thread today, you guys rock. See you out there, Guardians :)

  • I use blade dancer in the nightfall strikes to revive my teammates while I'm invisible, but I find the super to be really useless in PvE, so I just keep switching sub classes to get the golden gun.

    • I love Blade Dancer, I use it for all bounties, dailies, weekly's and of course for all Crota sections. So quick, so destructive! Only place I don't use it very often is VOG, although it is by far the best class for doing the Gatekeepers on either Mars or Venus. As for Perks, it definitely depends on the situation. For Nightfalls you will want to be stealthy and stay alive so invisibility for everything. For Daily's and bounties you just want to set everything to mass destruction, so Damage Enemies nearby and Increase Duration of Arc Blade from Kills. For Gatekeepers, you will want Invisible From Crouch and Invisible RT on Super.

          • Blade dancer can take on Knights/Minotaurs with melee easily. Just alternate between your arc blade and showstopper. It keeps them stunned so you can tear into them.

            • Hard for me to use a blade dancer in pve. He becomes useful for raids. Mainly crota but also vog. If you play on hard during the teleport phase you can turn invisible while capturing venus makes dealing with supplicants a bit easier. But now thats all random so I gunslinger it up. If you play with friends have a titan put on the perk for melee kills in bubble generate orbs. During different missions having a bladedancer use there super in the bubble can create a shiz ton of orbs. But thats all the class is invisibility and the swords its great for masses of enemies but throw some elite captains or hive and its pretty meh. Btw hunter since launch as well.

I never thought of seriously using Razor's Edge + Encore seriously in PVE before, but it sounds like it might just work. As for the Escape Artist thing, you have to make sure you run away ASAP after going invis or whatever action the enemy was in the process of doing will still occur in the area you were standing.

                • When i use Bladedancer in strikes i never melee with my super. Razors edge plus encore. You can kill way more stuff, but the orb output is lower. I also don't use health regeneration melee kill. Turning invisible with melee with the shadow jack perk gives you long enough to get your health back. I think arc blade is a higher raw kill output, and GG is better for team play.

                  • If you are looking to spawn more orbs with the arc blade super you really have to look at using it in specific scenarios with specific perks. For the most part it is simply a kill-all super that isn't meant to drop orbs but if you have encore paired with showtime/razors edge (I prefer showtime) you can purposefully run into the middle of large groups and maul them in one move replenishing your super to full. You can then use regular attacks to finish off stragglers. Doing this I have spawned 6 orbs as a bladedancer, but be warned that its very rare and difficult to do perfectly. Your other option is to use crest of alpa lupe to spawn more orbs.

                      • I use blade dancer mostly on nightfall. This is because I can go invisible, which enables me to grab ammo and revive team mates without risk.

                      • Usually I bounce back and forth between classes based on what I'm doing at the moment. Gunslinger is for ranged scenarios, while Bladedancer is for close up encounters, in my opinion. For Gunslinger I run with scout rifles and hand cannons, and for Bladedancer I rock shotguns and melee with Fast Twitch and Hungering Blade.

                      • Alpha Lupi or Mask of Third Man first for orbs, second for duration, whichever fits your preference. I use Razor to sweep lots of enemies rushing, tag a shielded enemy or spam the shit out of a boss. 5-7 Razors is a lot more damage than most people seem to realize. Your super grants damage resistance that is best used to armour up when you see a lot of hurting headed your way. Unless you use the self-heal on melee ability it isn't the best to use for an oh-blam!- button. At first I used the duration extend perk but I've found I can distract enemies better, mix things up better and survive to be the last one standing better with the self-heal on melee perk. Fast Twitch means plenty of that to go around. That works for me but I'm a crazy mama jama dancin' through the fight. Kills still work for generating orbs so if you're on a good team focus on finishing off damaged majors or knocking down Arc shields so your team mates can pound enemies down without having to rip through shields, when they're weakened one or two hits to get dat orb. Big crowds plus Razor=orbs. You won't generate orbs for throwing 5-7 Razors at a boss by himself but if any adds get in the way fair game. Kinda like Nova and Fist. Oh and yes you can hit floating enemies like Wizards, Hydras et al. with Razor, as long as they're not dodging up or moving to higher ground. Just watch out for corners/ledges. Invisibility is for Crysis. I'd rather be the dazzling display of death dancing through my enemies. Now if only I didn't suck with grenades. The above are merely my thoughts and opinions, please feel free to take or leave with as much salt as ya like.

                      • I have 2 builds for mine, one is stealth and one is crowd control. Stealth is basically just stealth everything (vanish, escape artist, shadowjack, stalker) used for revives or to flank. Crowd control is Arcbolt grenades, Showstopper, Fleet footed and Encore. As far as exotics go you'll want Crest of Alpha Lupi, or Lucky Raspberry. If orbs are your main goal, go crest. If crowd control is, I really suggest Raspberry, if you can place yourself decently, showstopper and encore last more than long enough imo and doesn't really warrant mask of the 3rd man. As far as your gunslinger issue goes, try path forgotten instead of path unknown and use the speed and high armor to your advantage.

                      • To my knowledge bladedancer is only of useful against enemies that it is capable of one shotting in pve. I mean it has its situaitional uses, but those tend to pale in comparison to golden which in turn pales in comparison too most other supers

                        • Bladedancer is really only good for resurrection of downed teammates and camo escapes. The super doesn't kill things efficiently or generate orbs, the grenades stink, and the passive abilities are unimpressive.

Personally, it depends on my mood. I usually prefer gunslinger, but blade dancer will always be a fun super. Strikes I usually do blade dancer because they're all low levels and I can clear areas faster, but I always switch to GG for the boss fight. I guess it really comes down to the situation you're in. Oh and first part of the hive raid I am always blade dancer. It makes it too easy. And blink is really good to use as the sword bearer when fighting Crota. Clean getaways :)

                            • you could try wearing the Crest of Alpha Lupi to generate additional orbs, although I prefer Mask of the Third Man. The perks I like to run Bladedancer with are encore (which when paired with the Mask gives you a lot of extra time in your super), and Arc Wave instead of the invisibility perk. The only invisibility perk I run is for Blink Strike. Try to use your super to take out massive amounts of regular enemies for the most part or enemies with arc shield like Captains instead of focusing on the majors, save the majors for your sniper.
