Destiny NEEDS a Healer Subclass

(Don't worry, this thread isn't about bashing the Sunsinger, read the title; and please, keep the insults about my mother light :) ) Lately people have been bashing the usefulness of the Sunsinger warlock subclass... And I can't help but go along with it. When I knew I was getting Destiny, I did my research on the Warlock subclasses, as I knew I wanted to be a warlock ever since that first e3 vidoc. Now when I first saw the name "Sunsinger" I immediately thought "Oh, so it's like a healer?". If you ask me that's what the Sunsinger sub should've been all along, a Healer, not some boring old grenade spammer. And the more I think about it the more I see this subclass fitting into the world of Destiny. [Other MMOers and RPGers can understand what I'm going through here, honestly, why is it Destiny try's to act like an RPG but doesn't actually do anything RPG-wise; but I suppose that's a conversation for a later day.] Here are my ideas on the subject: The warlock's melee would, when hitting a teammate, take off a portion of their super energy in addition to melee, but heal the player from a distance. The Warlock's super would create a ring around the caster that, when a teammate would step in, would increase health regeneration by 20-30%. This Ring, unlike the Ward, would follow the caster but he himself would not heal any faster as to keep things on an even playing field. Perhaps this might seem overpowered to you other classes, but just stay with me here for a moment. Isn't the Suros op? Would you argue the Titan Ward is op? With the right amount of fine tuning I believe bungie could do this for a fix on the Sunsinger (In my opinion, and other mmo/RPG players what it properly should be); or gift this to another class, for future DLC maybe? Or better yet! As a free piece of content for Bungie's loyal fanbase! (Yeah... That'll happen) For those of you who actually want to help your team in addition to also getting kills (I know there has to be Some of you out there!) this could be a worthy addition to a coming DLC that I would love to take part in! TL:DR
New Healer Subclass Addition • Melee directly heals Teammates (Still damages enemies) • Super creates a "Ring of Healing" that increases Health Regeneration much faster by 20-30% and follows the caster (Does not affect caster, no faster health rejuvenation) -New Subclass could be proper way to substitute Sunsinger Conundrum or Add a new future subclass for DLC.
Edit 1: Okay, I can understand why people wouldn't want this. You came from call of duty, never played an MMO, have no sense of team, only play deatmatch, and have never played a good Blood Gulch CTF game in your entire life. If your one of those people then I get it. But I don't understand it. Destiny isn't exactly encouraging solo-play, so idk. You have fun lone-wolfing it. Although that term is probably lost with Reach. Edit 2: The "Ring" is a concept I borrowed from Skyrim (A fantastic game for ALL Rpg players) where you can cast a magic protective ring around yourself that heals you and keeps enemies out (Don't remember what it's called, I'll look it up later). Obviously I left the "keeping people out part" for balance but the basic principles are all still there. (I know this didn't originate in skyrim, but that's what I'm thinking of when I think of of a visual representation for the subclass) Edit 3: Wow! some great feedback here guys! Keep it up! Edit 4: Trending, wow! I'm going to be posting a response to the most common seen comments and criticisms and provide a link, or I could put it in a normal format other than that, idk. I'll think of something. Edit 5: I myself have a serious problem with the Orb system that Destiny presents. The orbs are produced but there is no visual indicator (beside some small lines of text in the corner of the screen). For one, the Sunsinger would be a viable subclass for me if there was just more of a visual representation of how your actually helping your teammates. 1. "Using a healer would be useless and would not fit into Destiny at all, and there would never be a situation where we would actually use this."
Obviously what we're talking about isn't a straight up in the most technical term "Healer", what we're discussing is some who can manipulate that period in your shields when they are completely down. That is our target picture where this would be useful. That being said, I do believe a "Healer", noting it as the term we've laid above would be useful and could base itself I'm the world of Destiny based on one simple fact, every player ALREADY has a regeneration factor that can be changed in your subclass with special perks. The super would manipulate this factor for everyone by a significant percent to essentially where they could keep shooting an enemy and regenerate much "health". When I think of when and where this could be useful I imagine myself behind that one door and pressure area we all know of in Blind Watch, the common Mars map in most game types. Say while a warlock is closer against the railing still shooting but behind cover the Titans could jump out of cover and shoot the enemy while he runs from the warlocks bullets, effectively earning the kill and the warlock gaining a support accomedation.
P.S- for anyone interested in a good group of friends to find for raiding and such, join us in the Xbox Clan: HolyHandGrenade.

  • Did anyone here ever played Resistance 2 co-op ? I think Insomniac nailed the classes superbly in that game. You had the Soldier that had the most high-damage weapons and deployed temporary shields others could get behind, you had the Marksman that refiled the others with ammo and you had the Medic that refiled the others with health. The classes were so interconnected that on the lobby you had like 10 seconds before the game started and everyone would switch class to make sure they had enough of each. On the rare occasion players didn't adjust and stacked on one class, it usually meant an early loss: not enough marksman and everybody would run out of ammon, no medics=constant wipes and no soldiers=few cover and weak firepower.

  • I understand. I revive waaaaay too many people with the Field Medic setup I normally run. A healer would help limit that.

  • I'd love a support class. I had the discussion a while back about 3rd subclasses being support. With things like distance rezzing.

  • Destiny already has a healer class. Actually all three classes are selfhealers. When you run away from the things firing at you some magical buff happens and regenerates you back to full health. Don't take away my fusion grenadespam that does so much damage to bosses just because people can't run away from getting shot. I'm pretty sure MMO's have healer classes because you don't just regenerate health in the middle of battles.

  • I like where your head is at. I think a better idea would be an exotic warlock armor that when using radiance, it recovers your nearby allies' health. Healing Hands? Or Angel Feet?

    • Yeah the game is not much of an MMO. Not massive, the multiplayer is forced on you or pointless a lot of the time (raids aside, as the whole game should consist of 3-6man raids with variants. Ie difficulty, mob spawns, pulls, traps, cc... Anything that requires TEAM work instead of run and fun over and over) Oh but it is online. It's so online... Baboon

    • Titan Defenders are already your standard Paladin type class. It's already in the game. We don't need medics because there is regenerating health. There are two other sub classes for other types of support classes.

The problem with your idea is that the class would only be useful if you were playing with others. True, lots of the time you are, but there are plenty of people that solo things like the story misions, and having a class whose super and melee only help others would be useless. At the very least, the super you describe should buff the users health regen as well of those around him. Destiny does have MMO elements, but it is not an MMO in the traditional sese. Tryig to shoehorn in things from other MMOs just because 'that's how MMOs should be' does not seem like a good idea.

Dude I don't mean to be rude but your thread is really fuxking dumb, right now sunsinger has a lot of raid utility in Destiny it is literally vital to have one in any team because of the self resurrect and the song of flames for grenades/abilitys. Not to mention on a more sour side that people are Cheesing a lot of different things in the new raid because of sunsingers "death ress" This isn't world of Warcraft or anything similar to those other games it's an FPS there isn't a need for the tank/healer/dps set up and bungie likes it that way, they have said it themselves that they will never ever have roles such as the tank or the healer. Also why would a healer be useful when players self regen health... I can't imagine a healer in the crucible that would be so -blam!-ing stupid just standing there emptying a clip into someone and watching them bullet sponge, yeah no thank you. The idea of a warlock being able to heal more than they already do with all the sheilds and the distance they get on their Meele makes me want to stop playing destiny.

Personally, I feel that the song of flame perk is a great team perk but most sunsingers will choose the self rez. I feel that activating the super should automatically trigger song of flame, and provide faster health regeneration or over shields to nearby teammates. And maybe one grenade choice like solar flare, could be thrown to create a healing aoe and have the fastest cool down. To keep it balanced it would do very minimal or no damage at all the enemies. This would be a nice team ability. In addition, the warlocks melee hits anything on the screen( to op!). So maybe the melee could heal teammates. Instead of scorch, maybe something else that has a pretty short cooldown, blink strike with fast twitch fast. U could melee teammates with same range for warlock melee and provide a light over shield or quick constant heal regeneration for a short time. This would make the sunsingers a different and interesting sub class instead of a grenade spam. I feel that all these changes should be choice options for sunsingers so players can be a healer if they want to or be a grenade spam. Also, I feel that the defender should be more of a tank. Maybe abilitys to pull agro and have a good chunk of bonus health. Just my 2 cents
