Hacker is someone who seeks and exploits weaknesses in a computer system or computer network.
Yes, it's a "hack."

Your forgetting something. Hack means to break...to "hack away" like an axe.... same root word duh... They did't break in...they just ate up all the bandwidth like pacman on a eating binge.

Edited by Kubriks: 12/26/2014 5:59:42 PMThey didn't seek or exploit a weakness in the network though. All they did was keep shoving useless packets of data into the servers so that they took up all of the bandwidth. There's a big difference between breaking your window to gain access to your home and throwing turds into your house from your open front door.

The bandwidth was an weakness in the system. Flooding it with packets to shut it down is exploiting said bandwidth weakness

Bandwidth is more of a physical limitation that it is a weakness. It's impossible to have unlimited bandwidth. Also, the goal of hacking is to gain access to digital information. They never had any more access than anyone else that plays online games.

Unless it's the modding type of hack. You don't really gain information from having hacks in a game

Edited by Kubriks: 12/26/2014 9:54:00 PMModding isn't a hack either though. That's just modifying game files. There's a very large modding community especially if you look at Skyrim on PC. Bethesda even encourages modders.

Uh... That's a "weakness"... Dude, they broke the network.
-
That's not a weakness. It's just like if a LOT of people got on the servers at once. It couldn't handle the influx of people. They are doing the same thing, but Artificially. Its not a weakness lol.

Edited by Kubriks: 12/26/2014 6:07:54 PMHow is an open network a weakness? They're sending information through the exact same traffic channels that any of us are, they're just doing it many times over and all at once. Also, they didn't break anything. They took up enough bandwidth that no one else was able to use the servers. That's it. Nothing's been broken or damaged.
