Why do you do good?

I personally believe in God because I had an encounter with the Lord when I was 15. But not everyone has had the same experience and many do not believe God exists. So for those who do not believe in God, if there is no God, why do you do good? I heard a quote which I don't remember exactly but it goes something like this, "If there is no God than everything is permissible." If there's no God who draws the line between right and wrong? If there's no God, what's the point of life, we rose out of the slime, we live, we die, is it all meaningless to you? If there's no God than who are you to tell me I'm wrong for committing what you call a crime? If there is no God than I can govern myself and create my own laws, I am like my own god. But don't get me wrong, I have always been a nice peaceful person even before I met God. But my encounter with God changed everything, He gave me a greater purpose and hope for today and the future. So tell me? Why do you do good? I'll give one answer, I know people do good because it feels good and reaps good results. Like, you don't slap a random guy in the face because you just might get slapped the heck out lol---(you didn't know he was an MMA master.) But also people do good because their conscience tells them it's the right thing to do. But seriously, with all due respect, why do you do good?

  • Morality is not an objective trait outside of "x species thinks this way." It has not been shown to have a universal law stating something like "Killing's bad, mkay." I do good things because frankly I want the species to be better off than when I got here. That want/drive is nearly axiomatic due to instinct. If you want to do something, you are not then set on an objective scale regarding its "good/badness". If you're on a scale at all, it's on the opinions of those around you, and your own. Each person sets their own boundaries, whether or not they use religion to do so is up to them. I'm not sure I'd call you your own god when setting it yourself, but you'd certainly be more... independent?
